Seventh Annual Neopies Ceremony (Year 20)
After a 4 years absence (which doesn't make it an annual event but that's beside the point), the Neopies have returned! This will be the first one since JS took over so it'll be certainly interesting what categories they choose and especially what they think deserve an award.
Click HERE to go the Neopies main page.
Click HERE to see JN's guide to this year, and on the top of the page links to the past Neopies guides.
So without further or do, here are the categories. As an addedego boost bonus, I'm including in spoiler tags what my pick is and the reasoning why. Obviously these are my opinions and not meant to influence anyone.

So without further or do, here are the categories. As an added
Day 1 - Best New Colour:
- Steampunk (57%)(WINNER!)
- Toy (28%)
- Origami (15%)
My Vote: I went with Steampunk. It's the one the most work goes into (at least with the clothes, base color isn't anything special though sometimes adds some neat steampunk appendages). Second would be Origami as that does change the base and the Origami Neopets we've seen so far do look there was thought put into how the paper folds would work. Toy has disappointed me as there was so much room for creativity but instead they'll all just plastic figurines.
Results Discussion: Kind of obvious Steampunk was gonna win. Surprised Toy got more than Origami, guess I more upset at it then others (I can also see Toy being easier to customize than Origami).

Day 2 - Best Site Event:
- The Wraith Resurgence (52%)(WINNER!)
- Dragoyle Hunting (20%)
- Trouble in Brightvale (14%)
- Lyra and the Lost Heirloom (15%)
My Vote: Okay, first off, why is Lyra and the Lost Heirloom here? It's not even done yet (or is it?)! Anyway I picked The Wraith Resurgence. I was REALLY debating to go with Dragoyle Hunting as a sort of "stick it to ya" to JS for all the mistakes they made during TWR, but that said TWR is at least in the step of the direction I want Neopets to go in with bringing back full plots. Of course the problem is JS not knowing enough about Neopets to write a plot is another issue entirely (seriously as this point just ask either Jellyneo or us here on the Neopian Times Writer Forum to write up a plot, I have several ideas).
Results Discussion: Another none surprise. I would say a bit surprising to see Dragoyle Hunting got a fifth of the votes, but thinking about it it's probably the second best choice. It may have been a simple event but at least you had to actually look around Meridell and there were red herrings. Trouble in Brightvale you just clicked a button and LatLH isn't even finished yet.

Day 3 - Best News Day:
- Eliv Thade Takeover (33%)(WINNER!)
- Discovery of Meridell Day (32%)
- King Roo Day (13%)
- Darigan Day (22%)
My Vote: Come on, you know me: Discovery of Meridell Day. However bias aside I think most will pick it anyway as that's also the day they updated Meridell's main map (yet not the Castle or Meri Acres Farm) and had the Dragoyle Hunting Event. So yeah, much more going for it then the other days where at most a few items and a new colored Neopet was released (Eliv Thade Takeover had a fun gimmick with anagrams here and there but nothing much else).
Results Discussion: And the day with the fun gimmick won! But just barely. Still, maybe this would encourage JS to have a bit more fun in the News. Though hopefully they notice how close Discovery of Meridell Day was and take note that they did for that day was what made it a close second.

Day 4 - Species Specific Wearable:
- Desert Princess Kyrii (31%)
- Heroic Blumaroo (34%)(WINNER!)
- Bling Gnorbu (17%)
- Combatant Elephante (18%)
My Vote: Eh, I just went with Heroic Blumaroo because it looks neat and I like the MCU. I really have no leg in this race, though I did finally decide to dress up my Neopets this year I'm still not that big into customization. That said not so sure if Heoric Blumaroo will win, I think Desert Princess Kyrii may have a better chance here. Maybe Combatant Elephante too.
Results Discussion: Can't compete with that MCU popularity. However Desert Princess Kyrii is nothing to snuff at, only 3% difference between the two. Surprised Combatant Elephante is so close to Bling Gnorbu, no offense to Gnorbu but it's kind of the blandest wearables here.

Day 5 - Best New Petpet Colour:
- King Skarl Erisim (11%)
- Handsome Horus (18%)
- King Roo Baby Blu (49%)(WINNER!)
- Princess Terrana Kookith (22%)
My Vote: Now you probably think I'm going to pick the King Skarl Erisim, right? Well, actually no. I like to use my votes to reward creativity and effort and so I went with the King Roo Baby Blu. Why? Because the Baby Blu has a relation to the Blumaroo species so if you're making a special Colour for it a naturally choice would be other Blumaroo characters. While the King Skarl Erisim and Princess Terrana Kookith are similar, the Petpet species don't really have anything that connects them to the characters (infact none of them are from the land of the character they're dressed as). And obviously, while the Handsome Horus has a nice little tidbit about it being Lyra's Petpet, it's just a Horus with a gold jeweled collar around its neck.
Also, what's with all the Petpets based on Royal characters? We have plenty of other Neopian characters to base Petpets off of. Not to mention we also have Petpet Paint Brushes with plenty of Petpets available to be painted in those Colours. NOT TO MENTION one of these Paint Brush Colours is Royal and, while I give them credit for basing the King Roo Baby Blu cleverness, it probably could have just been a Royal Baby Blu; many would have gotten the reference.
Results Discussion: Oh wow, wasn't expecting King Roo Baby Blu was going to win by that much! I would think it and the Erisim and Kookith would be neck and neck, but even then there's a surprise with the Horus beating the Erisim! I guess either players liked the extra effort that went into all the details for the Baby Blu or many agreed with me on supporting a clever Petpet design/basis.

Day 6 - Best New Avatar:
- Trudy Avatar (27%)
- Brain Tree Quests (28%)
- AC Team Avatars (36%)(WINNER!)
- Fiendish Formations (8%)
My Vote: Wished the "Good Day at the Bank" was an option. Also cheating a bit having ALL the AC Team Avatars as one choice, might as well have done that with the Stamp Avatars they did. Anyway, tough choice, but I picked Brain Tree Quests to show my support for Avatars for Dailies and Games.
Results Discussion: To be fair, AC Team Avatars was representing 18 Avatars. Also it had been a long time request for team specific Avatars. I'm surprised Fiendish Formations is so low, especially since I think it's the one with the nicest animation.

Day 7 - Best Site Theme:
- Tis the Season (43%)(WINNER!)
- The Lost Heirloom (26%)
- Brightvale (17%)
- Meridell (14%)
My Vote: Now, here me out. I voted for Tis the Season. YES, I know. There's tons of problems with it. However, at the same time, it's nice to see they are experimenting with the Site Themes and making them more then just pretty wallpaper. Obviously the implementation needs work though at the very least I do like it changes your mouse cursor. Maybe the animation and music wasn't a good idea (at least the way they did it), but it shows they are willing to do more and experiment which I encourage.
Results Discussion: JUST BECAUSE MERIDELL GOT LAST PLACE MEANS NOTHING! So, um, anyway, not really a surprise who the winner is. Well, maybe a little due to how many had a problem with the Tis The Season Site Theme, though maybe like me it's the spirit of experimenting behind the Site Theme that got the vote more then the first one's execution.

Day 8 - Best NC Feature:
- Legends of Altador (20%)
- Kaia Quests (30%)
- Desert Jewel (11%)
- Haunted Mansion (38%)(WINNER!)
My Vote: Don't really participate in NC Accompaniments so had to do some research. Overall I decided to go with Legends of Altador. While it didn't necessarily add anything new it was based on site lore (one they had to do some research to know as it's really only a thing in the old PS2 Darkest Faerie game). So it was neat to see items based around Altador Council members who don't usually get a spotlight shined on them. As for the others, revealing Kaia Quests was just an NC Mall thing was a massive disappointment (we already have Delina, we don't need another NC Mall Faerie), Desert Jewel probably isn't over yet and doesn't really have a connection to the story, and Haunted Mansion was just another Halloween NC Mall event without anything more to it.
Result's Discussion: Okay, I guess the Haunted Mansion must have come with some pretty good wearables. Not to mention many aren't as mad at Kaia being another customization Faerie Quest as I thought they were.

Day 9 - Best Neopoint Item:
- Fish Filet Sandwich (23%)
- Dr. Sloth Lamp (27%)
- Mutant Wocky Rattle (18%)
- Bowling Ball of Lost Cities (32%)(WINNER!)
My Vote: JS, you consider these items your best, really? Well, of these four, I picked Dr. Sloth Lamp because I find it funny. What, they all don't have to have a deeper meaning.
Results Discussion: It's a good weapon that's cheap to get. If you're wondering why I didn't vote for it, I'm just getting tired of all these powerful weapons being released and them being cheap if not free. They're making old weapons with less icons obsolete and inching closer and closer to the amount of icons that used to be restricted for Hidden Tower weapons. And that could very well lead to icon inflation and that's the last thing we need happening. All the while they don't seem interested in other equipment like Shields or fixing/updating the Battledome. *Sigh* I'm beginning to sound like a broken record of an old man here...

Day 10 - Best Prize Pool Update:
- Trudy's Surprise (68%)(WINNER!)
- Apple Bobbing (4%)
- TDMBGPOP (19%)
- King Skarl (8%)
My Vote: Why is King Skarl's the image of the Erisim instead of, you know, King Skarl? Actually, maybe giving us a list of the new items they added would have been a better idea because they either relying on you taking them at word value or looking up the prizes on JN.
Now I was considering voting for Trudy's Surprise because it added the prizes as a new feature... but I did take a quick look at the new prizes the others got and my vote was swayed toward TDMBGPOP. Why? Because I LOVE the idea of the color mixed Plushies! Even if they only have this done for Plushies, it's still a fun idea with thousands of possibilities!
Results Discussion: Wow, very polarizing, though not surprising. Trudy's Surprise not only got a prize update, it got prizes period plus counters for its rewards. I am glad to see TDMBGPOP is second place and I would like to believe it's also because of the neat idea of the Colour mixed Plushies.

Day 11 - Best Advent Prize:
- The Long Road Home (53%)(WINNER!)
- Green Gift Pouch (24%)
- Wild Snowdrops Foreground (14%)
- Mr. Sandman (10%)
My Vote: Really? The Green Gift Pouch? You couldn't think of another Advent Prize that was better? Also I take them having the award being for the prize and not the animation as a hint that even JS agrees this year's Advent Calendar animations weren't good. Anyway I picked The Long Road Home, which I feel is sorta the obvious choice as its a full background and a well drawn atmospheric scene.
Results Discussion: Not surprised at all.

Day 12 - Best Art Revamp:
- Meridell (30%)(WINNER!)
- Brightvale (25%)
- Haunted Mansion (24%)
- Stocking Stufftacular (21%)
My Vote: Gotta go with Meridell here. Though I question whether Haunted Mansion counts as it's replacing the old Halloween NC Event not an update to it. Also, they made two images for the Haunted Mansion nominees yet for Best Prize Pool update re-used the Skarl Erisim image instead of making a proper one for Grumpy Old King?
Results Discussion: Wow, the results were closer than I thought! Meridell only won by 5%, Brightvale and Haunted Mansion were neck-to-neck, and Stocking Stufftacular was only 4-3% behind them; none falling under 20%. Not quite sure what that says. Sure, both the map revamps were 1st and 2nd making them more wanted my majority, but with the NC Events revamps not being that far behind, just below half, it more feels like its saying any update is welcomed... and with how lengthy map revamps must be & done for free while NC Events probably don't require that much work (wearables aside, but we're talking about the NC Event itself) & done to make money, it does make me worried JS may decide if they all equally make people happy they'll choose to do more NC Event revamps and maps... well maybe if they decide to do an NC Event in that land.

Day 13 - Best Neopet Colour:
- Robot Vandagyre (25%)
- Steampunk Hissi (48%)(WINNER!)
- Zombie Gnorbu (5%)
- Marble Chia (21%)
My Vote: Robot Vandagyre has this sort of intriguing Flatwoods Monster (an alleged alien) design, Marble Chia has that hilarious mohawk, but I had to give it to the one that really put a lot of detail: Zombie Gnorbu. Nah! Just kidding, of course I voted for the Steampunk Hissi.
Results Discussion: Not surprised. Maybe how close Marble Chia was to Robot Vandagyre, but they all fall where I thought they would.

Day 14 - Best Mystery Capsule:
- Retired MME Mystery Capsule (35%)(WINNER!)
- NC Mall 11th Birthday Gemstone Mystery Capsule (32%)
- Baby Bottle Mystery Capsule (14%)
- Mummified Retired Mystery Capsule (19%)
My Vote: Was thinking of going with one of the retired ones as there's plenty of retired items I believe should be given out another way, however I decided to go with Baby Bottle Mystery Capsule to support Baby (and Mutant, Maraquan, and the Food Chia) Neopets getting more clothing options (and hopefully in themes outside the stereotypical).
Results Discussion: As I said, plenty of retired items and the MME are the most fun and varied NC Mall items. Maybe we'll get to see more MME in the future (maybe make one for Baby, Mutant, Maraquan, and Food Chias...).

Day 15 - Best NC Wearable:
- Rainy Spring Day Background (64%)(WINNER!)
- Luxe Bedroom (18%)
- White Rose Arch (9%)
- Pretty in Pink Wig (10%)
My Vote: Who's going to vote a the arch or wig? It was between the two backgrounds and I was leaning toward the Luxe Bedroom, but then I realized something: wouldn't your Neopet be blocking the bed which is meant to be the centerpiece of the background? And indeed, checking it on JN's Wardrobe showed that most Neopets blocked the bed. Because of that, I went with the Rainy Spring Day Background because it's drawn with your Neopet being in the center of the imagine in mind.
Results Discussion: Went exactly as I thought it would.

Day 16 - Best New Character:
- Aurrick (12%)
- Xendrik (10%)
- Reizo (42%)(WINNER!)
- Lyra (36%)
My Vote: Huh, no Kaia, that's surprising. Anyway I picked Reizo for mainly minor reasons, though I don't feel strongly about any of these characters so minor reasons is all I really have. First the plot he's from is finished (so I have a feel for his character), second I think his design is cool... and I think that's it.
Results Discussion: Guess most users agreed with me. Lyra would be my second choice, I like her personality and she has a cool design. Aurrick's design is a bit too bland, he looks like an NPC then a main character. And while I also like Xendrik's design, he's a jerk and not the likable kind.

Day 17 - Best Caption Image:
- 1415 - A Beauty or a Beast? (26%)
"Voice belonging to skeletal hand- here let me, this angle will be so much more flattering!" - By juggal3tt3j - 1410 - A Magical Evening (20%)
Sloth: Tadaaa... Grundo 1: Nothing came ou...Grundo 2: Shhh! Just clap! - By cinnamon_girl - 1406 - Let the Festivities Begin! (27%)
Candychan: *whispers* Why's it backwards? Snuffly: *whispers back* They're working on converting the site to HTML5. - By neidrin - 1407 - Bubble, Bubble... (27%)(WINNER!)
Boween hides behind a potion. Miamouse scurries between a cauldron and the wall. One Magaral camouflages with some purple berries. The Barbat flies away. Green Magaral: Awww shoot... - By freeread
My Vote: I included the captions they included in the description because I feel they're going to help some people decide on what to pick as it did for me. Originally I was going to go for the Sloth one but, noticing they included the Captions, read them and couldn't think of a better one to vote for but 1406 - Let the Festivities Begin!. For one, while I do honestly try to support JS, now and again they do need a little poke here and there. Second, since JS are the ones who picked it, shows they can take the joke and (and hopefully understand the message behind it of the work they still need to do).
Results Discussion: WHOA! Not only are the numbers close but first and second are tied (Jhudora's winning probably by a few more votes so small they don't affect the percentage)! Jhudora's is alright, the caption is also funny. I'm surprised Sloth's has the least amount, especially compared to third's place which seemed pretty average to me.

Day 18 - Best Advent Animation:
- Day 2 - Mittens For An Abominable Snowball (26%)
- Day 7 - Snow Angels Live (47%)(WINNER!)
- Day 16 - Learning Something New (14%)
- Day 28 - The Unforgtunate Holiday Ogrin (13%)
My Vote: Ugh, maybe they should have skipped this category this year. None stood out, so much so they actually made a mistake with the images on the actual Neopies page I corrected here (they switched Day 16 and 28). Also they gave the Caption Images titles but not these (I decided to add my own titles)? Well, might as well get on with it, decided to go with Day 2 as it was cute and had more of a story. I guess so did Day 28 but I felt it broke from the previous story of the Unfortunate Holiday Ogrin so that took points away in my book.
Results Discussion: Oh, they gave them titles... and they misspelled "unfortunate" as "unforgtunate". If tomorrow's winner is "New Feechers" it would just be too perfect. Anyway, I'm surprised the winner is the one that was scaring everyone on the Neoboards, if not the animation than from the horrifying gift it gave. And is it appropriate or sad that the Unfortunate Holiday Orgin is last place?

Day 19 - Let us Never Speak of This Again:
- Nonexistant NC Items (29%)
- Release of 11 Stamp Collector Avatars (29%)
- The 'Plods' (30%)(WINNER!)
- New Feechers (13%)
My Vote: Wow, it's certainly a surprise they did this category, what would have been more surprising if they included more of their mistakes (like all their Battledome issues... also would image Charity Corner's Perk Shop to be another).
I made an entire Neoboard topic but I'll summarize my thoughts here: we should have a "all of the above" option. But since we can only pick one, let's go over each quickly:
New Feechers is very annoying though they looked to have improved on that front.
Nonexistant NC Items I imagine was a nightmare to deal with but I assumed it was fixed and so a lesson learned.
The 11 Stamp Avatars was a major problem and they haven't really done anything to fix it. For the Avatars themselves they need to get more of the retired ones out there (Sloth Auctions, Igloo Garage Sale, Almost Abandoned Attic, Money Tree, Rubbish Dump, Wishing Well, etc.. Maybe even super rarely for some Dailies). As for Avatars in general, what they need to do is start releasing Avatars "easier" or at least inexpensive to get. Avatars for Games, Dailies, and Site Features (like Faerie Employment Agency). Also let's not forget we used to get Avatars which was just based on a certain coloured Neopet or item. Would like to see more of those Avatars we used to get in the early days.
And now for my pick: The "Plods". Now, it's great that they're doing Plots, Neopets has deep lore full of potential. But it doesn't feel like JS knows what a Plot is or want to see how many corners they can cut. It's simple, we want to see plots like the ones TNT did a few years ago: Lost Desert Plot, Tale of Woe, Return of Sloth, & Faeries' Ruin. Both JS and TNT had made detailed pages about those plots. Comics, plot points, better pacing, some battling, and having a plot step every one or two story bits. That's what we want from plots. All the other candidates are annoying but easy mistakes to make, even the Avatar one (that's lack of foresight). However for how much work needs to go into making a Plot, I feel it's the bigger offender.
Results Discussion: Very close, but all understandable as the ones which tied are all equal an issue and higher of a problem then them misspelling words now and again (itself a problem but more of a problem you sigh at then want to scream your head of at). When it comes to NC you'd want to make sure players are getting what they payed real life money for. The stamp avatars caused all affected stamp prices to skyrocket faster then anyone could prepare for, notably for Avatar collectors. And finally my pick and the winner, it's not that we've waited for so long for to have a Plot again but a Plot is a chance to add in new characters & site lore (and maybe even do major changes), for it to end up disappointing is alarming and frustrating to players (not to mention for all the time it takes to produce a plot it may make JS not want to do them if they don't feel able to do them justice).

Day 20 - Best Premium Collectible Item:
- Dreamy Garden Patio Background (22%)
- Enchanted Pumpkin Patch Background (25%)
- Doorway to the Ocean Background (30%)(WINNER!)
- Mystically Guided Path Background (24%)
My Vote: A woodsy backyard, a spooky castle surrounded by pumpkins, a ocean view from a fancy hotel at sundown, and a dark room with multi-colored crystals and an ominous glowing door. I like the variety on offer, I'm fine with any of them winning. But which one to pick? Patio I passed on as, while nice, didn't really stand out. Pumpkin Path had me for a while but we've already had a few Halloween stuff already so kind of got tired of the motif. So it was between Doorway to the Ocean and Mystically Guided Path. So I thought about which one's theme I would like to see more of and the answer was obvious for me: Mystically Guided Path Background. Where does that door lead? How did you get there? What other magical sights does this location contain? Doorway to the Ocean is nice but I feel it's been done a few times already, watching a sunset on the beach, and done better.
Results Discussion: Not surprising, it is a lovely background. Reminds you of those dream vacations of just going to a tropical resort with a balcony that points out to the horizon.

Day 21 - Best Neopoint Background:
- Grey Winter Evening Background (19%)
- Tree of Petals Background (32%)(WINNER!)
- Home of the Vandagyres Background (20%)
- The Long Road Home Background (28%)
My Vote: I feel three of these are kind of the same. Because of that I would have gone with Home of the Vandagyres... but I looked at how the Neopets positioned on it and it looked off. Thinking about Tree of Petals since it was very striking... but looking at if the scaling felt off. So I was left with the two that you might as well flip a coin to choose. However I have a reason for picking The Long Road Home Background: I think it gets that somber feeling of travelling through a bare forest in winter better. Grey Winter Evening looks like you're just in the middle of the woods, but Long Road Home has that winding road in the background getting across that, as the name suggests, it's going to be a long walk home.
Results Discussion: Not surprised, as I said it's a pretty striking Background you can use for all sorts of meanings.

Day 22 - Best NP Wearable:
- Trudy's Head Wreath (33%)(WINNER!)
- Sparkler Dress (13%)
- Swanky Denim Jacket (28%)
- Spoils of Victory (26%)
My Vote: Was originally thinking of going with Spoils of Victory, but felt that wouldn't be quite right as that's more a trinket then a wearable. So I instead went with Swanky Denim Jacket. It's a notable clothing item unlike the wreath and can be worn by any species unlike the dress, and who doesn't like a nice, no, a swanky denim jacket?
Results Discussion: Really? Well, alright. Maybe because it's a Trudy prize? Not that it's bad looking, but feels a bit too simple. Looking it up I guess it's the only non-species specific wreath that's not attached to a wig, so there's customization options.

And for those who voted every day the final prize is: Neopies After-Party Background.
It's alright, nice if you want to make your Neopet look like it's living up the celebrity life.
