Okay, here are a few things that I feel are weaknesses in my art that I would like to work with or let go off if they're holding me back:
- I spend more time tweaking/refining my art than actually drawing it. So like, i'll sketch something and I'll just keep seeing things that look off and start "fixing" them. Would love to minimize this step by either learning to draw more accurately from the beginning or take down my perfectionism a couple of notches, because...
- My art tends to be stiff. I wish I could be a lot looser, but I feel like it's not something that comes naturally to me. I like being thoughtful, careful and detailed, not just in my art, but in a lot of aspects of my life. I like seeing sketchy styles of art, or "messy" coloring where the artist was purposely not too bothered about staying perfectly within the lines or covering up every bit with color, but I can't do it. I feel like it goes against who I am as a person. XD; How do I become more spontaneous so that reflects in my art as fluidity?
- Need to study anatomy -_- I do pretty well when I have a reference, but I struggle to get proportions right when I'm trying to draw something I only imagined.
- Backgrounds. I rarely draw backgrounds, and half of the time when I do, they're not well-planned, but rather tacked on at the end. oops. >>;
- Expressions. Do you mean emotions other than 'happy', 'cheerful', and 'content' exist?
- Composition. I think this ties back into stiffness? Would like to play with different angles and points of view more, cause everything I draw tends to just be just front facing? And I think it's partly that I don't fully imagine the volume of things and the environments they're in? Gotta think in three dimensions to give my art more depth. Gotta work on that spatial intelligence!
- Cohesive color palettes. I think I like my art best when I overlay colors, like they're reflecting on each other? For example, if you scroll up a little to the Crocker Faerie picture, you see how I used the blue of her wings in the shadows of her dress? Like, why don't I do that all the time? it brings everything together so nicely and gives it much more life.
- Speed. This ties again into being a careful and detailed person, everything just takes too long! XD; This is like, the least of my worries, though. I'm not working against the clock, and usually only ever have self-imposed deadlines for my art, so... I mean, if a drawing takes all day, so be it, right? But still.
I'm overwhelmed. Help! too much to work on, and it's haaard!
Not to end this on a negative note, though, here are a couple of things that I would count as my strengths, or things I like about my art:
- It's usually cute and happy, which is what I look to express!
- After all my tweaks and refining, I'm usually happy with the end result. I look at my art and feel proud! I've come a long way!
- If I didn't draw it, no one else would have, so that's already a huge win. Something exists in the world thanks to me!
I don't know, it's like... I don't want to be seen as putting myself down, because at the end of the day, I actually do like my art and I'm proud of it? I just feel like the process of getting there can be a struggle and I wish I could make it smoother. And also, like... there's so much amazing art out there, and it's hard not to fall into the trap of comparison.
Anyway, I need to go to bed now. I was just thinking about all these things cause I stayed up late drawing, haha. But uh... I'm usually too scared to ask for feedback, but For a Limited Time Only™, if you want to, please tell me what you think about my art. What do you like about it? Is there anything you feel is lacking? Anything I should focus on practicing/improving in particular? I'll be honest and say I know the main thing I'm lacking is perseverance. But I'll take any advice!
