Welcome to the 2024 hub for OCtober! I'm sure we all know the drill by now, but just in case... OCtober is a month-long challenge to write something every day (or thereabouts) about your Original Characters (or "OCs"), following whichever of the prompts listed below. One usually follows the prompt for the specific day, but I'm sure no one will care if you skip a day or go out of order or whatever. The point is to have fun and create content for your OCs! And as always, interpretations of the prompt-of-the-day can be as literal or as loose as you want. (For example, a prompt of "Fall" could be about the season also known as autumn, or about a literal fall, or a metaphorical fall...) This will serve as the hub for OCtober 2024. You're free to chat, post your work, comment on other's work (since c'mon we all like that delicious feedback or even just a like on our post), and just generally do all things OCtober-related. If you participate (in this OR Artober), you'll be eligible for the shiny October Creative Challenge badge! So, go forth! Create content! Show the world your OCs! And most importantly, have fun. ^_^ Previous years: OCtober | OCtober II | OCtober III | OCtober 2021 | OCtober 2022 | OCtober 2023

I found this prompt list which seems pretty workable: So here's my blurb for today~ 1. BackpackIt was time to move again. Yinna checked off the list in her mind as she packed each item: toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, moisturizer, three shirts, three sets of underwear, three pairs of trousers, three pairs of socks. Sweater, shoes, umbrella, spare change, snack bars, water bottle, notebooks, pen.
Each time she went through this set of motions, she felt the same and yet different. Perhaps this time, the contract job she was going to would keep her for a longer time. She stood, feeling the familiar weight of her backpack on her shoulders. It felt like her family's hopes: a little heavy, but always there, staying with her through each train station and bus terminal. It would continue to provide her with nourishment at every turn. She held it close. 2. DiscoverSunniata couldn't stop playing with her new camera lens. "Check this out!!" she kept saying, bouncing back and forth to try a new angle. "Look look look look!"
Coconori looked at the close-up images of the salad they'd just made, the cushion she'd mended that morning, and the sleepy blossoming flower in the flower pot. The veins of the salad leaves were clearer than she'd ever seen them. The threads on the cushion were visible. And the beads of water on the flower were so still they almost seemed to tremble. She laughed.
"Isn't it a fantastic lens?" Sunniata asked.
"It really is," Coconori replied, still laughing. "Now, if you're done feeding the camera, can we eat?"
3. BootsThe soles of the old boots were worn - there was no way they'd grip properly anymore. It was dangerous to keep wearing them, Yinna told herself as she ran her fingers over the too-smooth surfaces. But she couldn't bear to throw the old boots away. They'd carried her through so many years of travel. From the moment she'd tried them on in the small vintage shop, she'd known they were hers. They were a beautiful caramel colour at the time. Now, they were a pale dusty yellow. But they were hers.
Well, if the only thing they could carry anymore was memories, then that's what they would carry. Yinna cleaned them carefully and arranged them in a corner. They didn't look too bad with stems of flowers in them. Her umbrella, folded up, slipped in quite neatly too. Yinna had new boots to wear now, but the old ones didn't have to go away.

Birdy's list number for Day 6: Late gave me a quick drabble idea, featuring my Neopets. Late"Gimmer? Is that you?" Daydream the Faerie Bori peered her head into the kitchen, where the Spotted Pteri was reading.
"We don't really disguise ourselves around here," Gimmer murmured, not looking up from her book.
"It's late," Daydream said.
"So? I have the day off tomorrow." Gimmer sighed. "Nothing besides minding the small shop that no one visits."
"Well, just don't stay up all night or something," Daydream said. "Getting sleep deprived wouldn't do you well."
"Not my first, it's fine, I'm fine," Gimmer waved a wing. "Besides, I'm not the only one up."
"Sorry, just concerned." Daydream looked up and frowned before walking around the house. It didn't take long for her to reach the living room, where Indal the Darigan Peophin was sitting on the couch and blankly staring at the wall.
"You still up?" Daydream asked.
"Not abnormal." Indal shrugged. "When did you become the team mom?"
"It's just... you're not really doing anything."
Indal sighed. "I know. Just thinking."
"About what?"
"Nothing in particular, just thinking. And procrastinating going to bed." Indal looked to Daydream, then got up and stretched. "You're right though. Not sure why you're being team mom about it."
"We're all so packed with volunteering and we work such weird hours," Daydream said. "I know some of us are running on bad sleep. Gimmer was lucky to get a break. We should get some during rare quiet nights like these."
"You're not wrong, but you're tired too. Think about it yourself." Indal moved towards the stairs. "Good night."
Daydream waved before sighing and looking out the window, pondering the aches of exhaustion in her eyes that she noticed now that she could no longer project her bedtime concerns onto others. Daydream noticing her symptoms was short-lived as she spotted Flower the Faerie Ixi outside, staring up at the sky.
Daydream walked outside. "Up so late?"
"Shh. Look at the stars."
Daydream obliged. It wasn't a completely cloudless night, but it made it no less dark. A shelf of cumulostratus clouds covered small portions of the sky, including one that covered the moon, bathing its sides in a beautiful silver glow, complementing the silver twinkle of stars that otherwise overwhelmed the night sky.
Daydream was rendered speechless.
"Complete darkness gives better stars, of course," Flower said. "But as an air mage, I think you'd appreciate the juxtaposition."
"I do..." Daydream breathed.
"Light and Shadow; ultimately inextricable."
"Yeah..." Daydream shivered, realizing that she stepped outside without winter gear. "It's still Terror Mountain. Aren't you cold?"
"I'm okay," Flower said. "If you're cold and planning to stay, grab some gear."
"You don't mind?"
"I don't mind. I'm just admiring."
"...So I originally came out to suggest you go to bed," Daydream said. "Because of the weird volunteer schedule."
"You're right," Flower said. "But if you stuck to that and never made that sacrifice, you wouldn't see unique things like this view, would you?"
And so, Daydream and Flower delayed their bedtimes to watch the stars and the movement of the clouds of that one moonlit evening.

9. SunI've been wanting to write an extended story / series about Sibylla, my Mutant Elephante on GC, but never found the time. So I guess I'll use this opportunity to at least get some short lines scribbled. The baby arrived with the day's first sun-rays. The light streamed mercilessly into the birthing room, illuminating every detail of her haunted face. She bawled weakly, and the nurses bathed her in silence. When her exhausted mother asked to see her, they merely said, "Sleep. Don't worry. We'll take care of your child."
Everyone thought the baby wouldn't survive. There were whispers of her being cursed, a demon-child. But by the next morning, she was still bawling in a way most unbecoming of a demoness doomed to die.

4. ExoticWhen Lady Belladonna Venetti first graced the Empire of Qasala with her presence, the citizens saw at once why Crown Prince Razul was besotted with her. The Lady was of great beauty, of course — a dark, melancholic beauty that was starkly different from the blinding opulence of the daughters of the desert. Her attire was neither light nor flowing, but a foreign-style gown of midnight black that should have been stifling in the late morning heat but which she carried with elegance and quiet refinement. When she spoke in Qasalan, her lilting accent chimed musical to the ears.
