Yay, OCtober is here again! OCtober, as you may or may not know, is a month-long challenge to write something every day about your Original Characters (or "OCs"), following the prompts listed below. One usually follows the prompt for the specific day, but I'm sure no one will care if you skip a day or go out of order or whatever. The point is to have fun and create content for your OCs! And as always, interpretations of the prompt-of-the-day can be as literal or as loose as you want. (For example, "Fall" could be about the season also known as autumn, or about a literal fall, or a metaphorical fall... you get the idea.) So! This thread here will be the hub for this event. Feel free to chat, post your work, comment on other's work (because let's be honest, we all love those comments or even just a like), and, most importantly, have fun! Plus, if you participate in this or Artober, you are eligible for the shiny October Creative Challenge badge! Yahoo! Previous years can be found here (with more info and such): OCtober | OCtober II | OCtober III | OCtober 2021 | OCtober 2022

*Do you have a favourite site character that got little-to-no characterization or backstory or screentime or whatever, so you decided to make it up yourself? Or did you take one look at their "canon" representation and go "I reject your reality and substitute my own!"? This is the day you show that off! How you made an already-existing character your own. <3 (And yes this may technically go against the "Original Character" spirit, but who cares, it's only for a day, right? \ o / )And of course, feel free to post any other prompt lists you find, or use the ones from Artober! (Just maybe mention what list your prompt is from should you post something to avoid confusion. Or let chaos reign! Your choice~ )

1. Run/Night, feat. a legend in the monigame. such worldbuild much wow oh my godddd In past times each day was split evenly between the sun and the moon; they were interlocked in the heavens in a perfect dance--otherwise known as a boring dance.
Tokiin would not abide by it. So one day he visited the duo, and asked each about its importance. The moon replied by saying, "I am a beautiful gem in the sky, a guide for those in the darkness." The sun chuckled, then said, "I bring all light to the sky, so that they do not need one."
The sun continued its dance as normal, but the moon, despising the way its partner chuckled, began to spin faster, and faster, and faster, until it ran out of breath, lagging behind the sun before it could reach it. It would try again and again, forever. 2. Water/Urban legend, feat. Edgeman. based off an unreleased tale of garbo Healers were sent to Muraad as soon as the village complained of a plague. After a few days, the healers themselves became affected, swearing that whatever struck Muraad was no ordinary disease, and then enlisted the help of the paladins of Anhur.
It was something fiendish, they insisted. Of course, they had no proof--nobody ever did--but somehow they came to believe in an urban legend--or a village-legend, supposed Cepith. Some man lived in the well, and if you came to it during a harvest moon, or perhaps during a new moon, or perhaps exactly at dawn, he would shake your hand, and you would turn into one of them. Them.
The ambiguity always lent interest in those sorts of tales, but Cepith was not one for ambiguity. He leaned very slightly over the well and imbibed its scent. Nothing but a vague dampness and the unrelenting smell of sizzling sand. How disappointing, he thought. Not even the water itself had a whiff of devilry.
But the man could still exist somewhere. Now, time for more tedious task than slaying some well-demon. It was time to round the villagers right up, and see what--or, if he was lucky, who--was responsible for this little "plague."

3. Candy/Music. feat. The Lady of the Lake (and assorted goblins) The Lady of the Lake sulked in her new home in the lakebed. Her plumage expanded underneath the water, and her hair undulated around her. Above-water were a gaggle of goblins holding a welcome party for their new ... not ruler, she supposed. Very unwilling neighbor was more like it, though it wasn't their fault, really.
It would have been rude to continue ignoring them--their loud, piercing singing seemed genuine enough, and it was hard enough for goblins to organize themselves for much of anything, let alone a "band."
So, she exited her house and kicked herself up, gracefully landing on the water surface to face them. A discordant chord punctuated her bow to the partygoers.
"Lady of the Lake!" cried one, carrying a bunch of something in what appeared to be a burlap potato bag. "To welcome you, we hereby gift you this year's harvest."
The Lady of The Lake nodded and took their offering, expecting something plant-like, or at the very least something that could presumabely grow out of the earth. Instead, she had received pound upon pound of what looked to be... bon-bons. "Oh. Thank you for your 'harvest.' I will be sure to save these so they last the entire year."
The goblin nodded, and in an annoying, starling high-pitched voice, said, "Of course! This was picked from the best goblin grandgoblin stashes! I hope you like it!"
She smiled, happy that she at least did not have to worry about tooth decay.

4. leaves/fall (this theme sounds like an anime) feat. khamet When Khamet witnessed his first fall, he immediately wrote about it in his journal. The reds and oranges on the trees, he excitedly told Sabef, were like rose petals. Very large rose petals, on things that did not really resemble roses, but they were about as red. The trees sometimes turned into sunflowers, sometimes into marigolds, growing into their second bloom.
And then all the petals covered up the ground in tandem. It was like they were conspiring together. They could be hiding roots from the imminent cold snap--or concealing some underground creatures. Like the drow, he thought, they should very much like the fall.

5. Opportunity/Fear feat. Bird. Bird looked over the precipice of the giant hand.
He had not flown since his wing was broken. Whenever he flapped his wings, he would gain just a little bit of lift before falling unceremoniously a few centimeters back to the ground. It was all for nothing, so he just stopped trying, instead content with being ferried around by his human.
But that changed when the human started putting the very delicious seeds just far enough away that he couldn't hop to it. And wouldn't you believe he tried his hardest to hop to it! But it was always in vain. He even tried to chirp very adorably, but that absolute monster wouldn't budge.
He knew, deep inside his little gut, that he would have to hover a little bit to get it. With his weak wing, high above the ground.

6. Shy/Debt feat. tinyRaia Taniki walked past her classmates and got herself a seat in a corner underneath a raspberry tree. As she opened up her lunch, she watched the other kids. There was a group of three boys who fed their lunches to the local cats before running off into the distance. Another group built sandcastles wherever they felt like it. The intellectual kids sat down and discussed the latest adventure they all had read. Even the teacher's pets had a place to their own, exchanging stories about their instructors as though they were ready to hold their mantles themselves.
They were so natural. To disrupt them would be to take an axe to a perfectly functioning forest, or spill ink into a river stream. But you couldn't help but be mesmerized by the way birds took off in flocks, or the way fish swam together with the current.
A girl with magenta eyes flitted from one group to a next. "Hello, Raia!" they'd say with large smiles, some of which were almost-toothless. "Don't worry, we're on the up-and-up."
Raia would nod solemnly, perhaps engage in a game or two, before moving on. Eventually she made her way all the way to Taniki.
"Hello, Tankiki. May I sit next to you?"
"Um, sure. I--"
She did not even wait for a response. "What did you get today?"
"Oh, I had some nuts."
"Those are good," replied Raia, ripping out a piece of flatbread into her hands. "So, what are you doing right now?"
Tankiki unconsciously reached into her bag, only to find there was nothing left. "I don't know."
"You look bored. Do you want to play Snake?"
"Only if--"
She found a finger pointing at her, and the words: "Hey, everyone! Taniki is the snake! Run or you'll have to be it!" Before running herself, Raia smiled. "Get moving! We can never run too far!"

7. Ritual/Pool feat. Baria Being assigned to a desert planet was hard for everyone, but it was especially hard for Baria. The human employees could drink water and moisturize; Baria had to keep her tentacles submerged in airtight water tanks so long as she was outside the climate-controlled dome.
Even within that climate-controlled dome, there wasn't even a single pool of water. Of course, regulations stated that the workplace had to be accessible. The people upstairs avoided any possible lawsuits by giving her 1.5 times the amount of nonconsumable water for the average employee--barely enough to fill a fishbowl.
But everyone liked Baria. For months, she worked in the company of increasingly foul-smelling coworkers and did not say anything. Then, on her hatchday, she was greeted with a kiddie pool, filled with water everyone had been saving for her instead of their weekly showers.
"Happy hatchday!" they said in tandem as she tested the water. Lukewarm, just the way she liked it.
Baria did not quite understand the humans' religion, why they felt the need to perform this ritual on the day of one's hatching, but she appreciated it nonetheless. Well, mostly. The smell wasn't amazing.

8. fragile/destiny feat. khamet and great-great-great (yes) grandpa Khamet stood on his tip-toes just to catch a glimpse of Eloiseac's tapestry. It depicted a watering hole in the middle of the savannah, acacias and candelabras distantly in the background, their green clouds populating the clear sky. A peaceful menagerie stood side-by-side drinking; giraffes bent their necks in the vicinity of lions, and a baby elephant showered a crocodile with its trunk.
But up close, the tapestry was nothing but thread woven so loosely they sliced the ray of sunlight that fell upon the desk.
"Grandpa," he said, "I don't think this is very good."
The ashen elf did not turn his head, instead focused on the weaving. "What makes you say that?"
"Well, it's thin. It'll rip."
"That it will. It's not meant to last long."
"But it's so pretty."
"That it is. That's why it's important to appreciate these things while they're still around."

9. Orange/Destiny ............. feat. fate and alva (mentioned) (thornnpc) Fate's duty was to help spin the wheels of destiny, ignite the flames of fate, etcetera etcetera. It was less exciting than it sounded; often, people's first reactions to a purple fey testing them was confusion.
It was funny the first few times, but after a while, it became annoying. Honing her communication skills didn't bode well either; it turns out that most people's reaction to the news that they were to play a significant part on the stage of history was panic and dread. That was never funny.
So, sometimes, she would lighten the mood. Fate would pick a particularly ripe-looking orange from her friend Alva's garden and "test" small children. Yes, child, she would tell them, it is your destiny to deliver this holy orb onto your parents.
Children reacted much more nicely, much closer to the stories, and gave the fruit to their parents.

This made me smile so hard! Sometimes you are a mystical fey and your bestie is a dragon and you're just doing your best. Thanks for thinking of these two. <3

10. Decorate/Scare feat. Edgy and Usana (his ex) (cw. taxidermied demons, mention of surgery (since latter character is a surgeon))
Usana rubbed the bags underneath her eyes, hoping she could flatten away her weariness. When she'd asked if Cepith had procured more demon heads lately, she wasn't expecting him to take her so seriously: there he was, excitedly telling her about how he had slain this tiger-shaped demon. How interesting that its sickly green eyes still retained their color! he was saying. Even with the most advanced methods of preservation, that wasn't possible with regular animals.
And Usana could confidently say he was correct. The first time he'd done something like this, many years ago, she was not a surgeon, but now she routinely disassembled the sick to build them back up. By comparison, his demon collection seemed like a quaint bit of decoration hardly worth considering.
"It's really quite interesting," she said. "You could dedicate time to studying their biology."
And then she wished she hasn't said that, because Cepith proceeded to introduce her to his collection of tissue samples and regaled her with his newest findings.
Some things never really did change. At least he seemed happier.

11. Fire/Chores feat. Master Wong and Eldrien "Well!" said Master Wong, looking proudly at the spotless reception room of the mansion. And it was truly spotless--not a single thing besides the glistening, waxed floors could be seen, not even the paint on the walls. "Look at that! Our home has never been cleaner.
Eldrien, arms crossed, inclined his head toward the fire elemental "maid," who ... honestly, it was always difficult to tell if a vaguely human-shaped ball of fire was happy, but it certainly looked proud of itself. "And where is our furniture, dear?"
12. Vow/Lucky feat. Ferdinand Galateo and Aurora Galli "Ah!" said Galateo, pulling his 20-times-ex-wife-and-current-fiancee closer, "we should have this wedding on the 21st! We should theme it based on halfling culture. 21 is a lucky number, and it'll be our 21st wedding, and this will for sure bless our marriage."
"Don't be so pessimistic; it will bless all our future marriages as well."
"Future?" Galateo slid his right eye, which had drifted away into his cheek, back into place. "No, no, I assure you, twenty divorces is more than enough for us."
(It was not.)

(It was not.) Wong has very minimalist tastes I see!

20. Nest/Spooky, feat. bird. bleh. Bird did not really know how to describe his human's nest. He lived in a place with many other humans, like a hive of bees, but less crowded--like a warren of rabbits, but above-ground, in these structures the humans upended from there.
It was a nice nest--and the humans, for the most part, were happy to let Bird go where he pleased. But lately, there was another human invading this nest, and he would go to the other human's nest. For the most part, they exchanged human calls, taking turns singing one after the other. He had never seen his gray human produce so much sound.
Bird was scared of the other human. He was about as large as the gray one, with what seemed like a long, brown, bifurcated feather growing out of his nose. And he was very loud--Bird would say that maybe he called one, two, three, four... whatever came after four... times as much as his gray human. His voice was fine, Bird thought, not as calming.
But--even still--Bird supposed it was good that his human was bonding with other members of his flock. And soon, he thought, he may even share a nest with someone someday!
