OCtober is upon us once again! This thread will act as the hub for OCtober on the NTWF! Feel free to chat, post your work, comment on other's work (because let's be honest, we all love those comments or even just a like), and, most importantly, torment characters have fun! But wait - "What's OCtober?" I hear you ask? It's simple! Below you will find a list of 31 prompts - one for each day in October. The idea is to create something about an OC of yours pertaining to the theme for that day. Interpretations of the prompt can be as literal or as loose as you want! (So basically, Inktober, but for writing.) And, if you participate (in this or Artober), you are eligible for the shiny October Creative Challenge badge! Can't write something every day? Want to skip around? That's okay! Write what you can, when you can. This is meant to spark ideas and just celebrate OCs and their stories. No worries. It's all good. ^_^
Previous years can be found here (with more info and such): OCtober | OCtober II | OCtober IIISo without further ado, the Prompt List for 2021!

*It has been clarified by the list's creator that this can be either "tear" - the act of shredding paper or the like, or "tear" - that wet salty thing that tends to leak out of the eyes when overcome by Feels.
Now, go forth! Plan! Plot! Or don't! Just write! And most importantly, have fun!!

May I just interpret these words as prompts for writing Neo-themed poems about real or imagined characters, as I often borrow Neopets characters and write poems or stories about them, fleshing them out? Or is this OCtober thing strictly for characters we made up ourselves? I like the idea of writing a Neopets poem a day, or maybe every two days, as a challenge.
And, side note: I like these one-word prompts. Plus, I don't start my new job until November, so unemployed and ready to do something low-stakes creative.

I believe the idea is to focus on characters that one has made up themself (which would include characters created from scratch for a fandom, such as Neopets), yeah. Although, what does everyone else think? If someone wants to take a basically-canon character with little-to-no-personality and adopts them/fleshes them out, would that count as "close enough" to being an OC for us here at the NTWF? Or should we stick to only made-from-scratch characters (with canon characters playing a minor role if they show up at all)?

I mean, OC does stand for "original character", but on the other hand it's not like someone's going to come to your house and break your kneecaps. I'd say it's the same guideline as any other self-imposed creative challenge--use it in a way that is useful and applicable to you and do what you want to get done.

Yeah, while I may participate a few days on this, I'm actually going to be taking a different track to this, since I cannot art and I don't feel like doing OC stuff right now. But I do feel inspired in other writing ways, and so I plan to use a prompt list from some place or another for that. So I generally look for more vague stuff, though I'm not opposed to the occasional specific prompt.
(Heck, I might even take some from the Artober prompt lists, because some of them fit what I want to do better.) So yeah, I'm taking it pretty loosely.

An "OC" (Original Character) is a character which you've created that is your own original content. You own everything about it, and it is legally yours.
If your character is created using any amount of someone else's intellectual property, then it is a Fan Character, or "FC". You legally don't own it because it uses copyrighted content.
(Example: Fluffy the Kougra would be a Fan Character. Fluffy the tiger would be an OC. Fluffy the (insert species you made up, here) would also be an OC. Fluffy the tiger who lives in the Pokemon World and trains as a Jedi would be a FC.)
That said, I believe that Fan Characters are just as valid for OCtober. They employ a lot of the same creativity and sometimes they're only a few tweaks away from being completely original characters.

1: Journey “And your return to your next life, would it include you...” Samantha felt silent and bit her lip. He chuckled, as a pair of wide opened eyes stared at him.
“...dying?” Richard asked. He thought for a moment. “Just think about it as a journey.”
“Spiritual?” Samantha’s face expressed disbelief.
Richard shook his head: “I am going to climb the highest point of Earth, then jump out of this world. Nothing spiritual about that, don’t you agree?”
I cheated. I was too excited and wrote this 4 days ago. ::)

1: journey yes this is six sentences. no i don't care. "This is so boring, dad," said Cadmia.
"Deal with it, because we'll be walking a while yet. It's about the destination, not the journey."
"Isn't it usually the other way around?"
"In life, you will put up with endless drudgery to get where you want to be. You'll understand when you're older."

Day 1: JourneyA very quick little piece. I am almost convinced my lovely D&D girl Astrophelle will die next session- I have notes of something she needs to tell the party before the fight, to make sure there's not an unnecessary loose end if she does fall. So I thought it would be nice to write a piece of her reflecting on her journey so far, and her reasons for doing anything in the face of fear. I chose a moment from a couple story arcs back when she was facing the prospect of her own demise, and went from there. Astrophelle had never felt so far from home. With the far realm tugging at her heart, she couldn’t even talk with Evlavei. All she had left was her brother Amadeus who, after all these years, seemed like a completely different person. Or maybe he’d never really been who she thought he was in the first place. Perhaps he had always been cold.
She glanced at the teacup in her hands. Astrophelle took tea alone today. Some days were just like that. It wasn’t a bad thing. She could breathe in the steam, and focus.
Reflect.
Her life mattered because of what she could do for others. Astrophelle had understood that from a young age- she wanted to help people, she had gifts that made it easier to do so, and so she would help as many as she could. However, a situation so personal as the present muddied things. With the far realm threatening her life so directly, there was an additional layer of fear in what she and her allies now did. It was hard to keep others as one’s primary concern when one’s own life was at stake. Her thoughts were clouded at every turn, each decision made weightier by the knowledge that the wrong choice could doom her and everyone like her. The right choice might doom others. Some choices seemed impossible.
Still.
She would try. That was all she could do really, in the end. If her trying saved even one person who would otherwise be lost- whether fallen through violence or manipulation, fear or grief- then it would all be worth it. In the end.
Because what was the purpose in possessing such gifts, if she didn’t use them to make the world better? Day 2: GlassVery quick couple of sentences with Dion, my Wrighton character. <3 She's a sea monster learning to live among people! “What is it?”
“It’s a glass.”
“Huh,” Dion tapped it a few times. “I think it’s a plastic.”
“Yeah. We just call it a glass. They’re not always actually made of glass.”

2: Glass General shut the doors, leaving Richard and the head of the legion alone. Richard made no sound and waited patiently for the person to turn around. The head of the legion was standing a few feet away at the large table and pouring something in a glass.
Richard looked at his feet. The floor all around him was covered in tiny, shiny fragments of glass. If he could recall correctly then the first glass fell somewhere around the place where he was standing. Back then the up-to-come head of the legion was a timid and fragile girl who accidently dropped a glass. Since she became the princess of the legion, glasses fell at least once a day. How did they provide her with so many glasses - Richard didn’t know.
The person turned around without raising her eyes to him. She swirled the glass and then slowly poured out the liquid on the other hand. She raised her wet hand in front of her until her sight caught the visitor.
“Oh, it’s you,” she theatrically exclaimed. Princess released the grip around the glass and let it get smashed on the floor in small, luminous pieces.
