The month of October draws near... and that means it's time to draw! Or whatever you want to do for October Creative Challenges. This thread is for hosting prompts, creations, comments, discussion, and so on. You notice that I didn't specify what kind of creation you should make for this. While traditionally this thread has been for visual arts, if you want to write, or bake, or dance, that's cool too, you're welcome to join in the creating fun, art is a very board subject. Anyone can join in at any time and any skill level. It's lot of fun, whether you do one or thirty-one creations. And if you post at least one piece, you can earn this shiny forum badge: Other October Creative Challenges: OCtober 2021!Prompts: Lizica's Emotions October Challenge! Yay, I'm excited for Artober! \o/ Before October comes around, I have a couple things I would like to bring up...
First, how do you guys feel about Inktober this year? Last year there was that plagiarism controversy about Jake Parker's book, but I have since seen people make the argument that while, yes, there are obvious similarities, there's only so many ways the art basics can be taught, and if you compare any two other art books teaching you the same basic knowledge, you will likely run into the same 'problem'. And honestly, that makes a lot of sense to me. I don't think the artist who made the accusations had bad intentions. He raised righteous concerns. But I'm also really not convinced it was plagiarism. I don't know, I feel like it was a messy situation all around. I'm inclined to follow Inktober again this year. What do you guys think?
Also, moving on to a different topic, you might remember last year I tried making up my own forum-themed October creative challenge with the name of NTWFtober. It was sadly pretty much a failure. XD; Not even I followed the prompts, so you know, that was... not great. The only actual feedback I saw about it was that the prompts were too open, so it was hard to know how to go about them, which makes a lot of sense. So my question is, would you like to see a NTWFtober 2.0, with more specific prompts (perhaps actually taking suggestions from everyone, instead of coming up with them myself)? Or should I put NTWFtober to rest as a one-time experiment? Either way is fine with me, but I thought I'd ask. ^^

I've got no strong opinions of Inktober myself. I'm pretty burnt out on online controversies, especially ones like this that require parsing through hours of content and back and forths to be even somewhat caught up on what's happened. At this point I feel the situation has become too muddied with internet shenanigans to have any definitive answer on who may be in the wrong. I'm skeptical that it was clear cut plagiarism myself, but really at this point I just don't care because it is not a rabbit hole worth my time. There'll likely be people who move on from Inktober, which is perfectly fair, but I also personally wouldn't judge anyone who does follow the prompts this year. At its heart, it's a free event made to encourage creativity, and both it and the ways one can participate have grown way beyond its original creator.
Ah, NTWFober still sounds like a fun idea! The optimistic side of me wants to say try for it again, but my more practical side is reminding me that I don't have the best track record keeping up with a month-long event. I think when there are two month-long creative events happening in October, it can be difficult for people to participate in both. Not that I don't think it's doable, though, but that some reformatting like you mentioned could help indeed! More specific prompts sounds like a good change, and perhaps each prompt could last for several days rather than being a daily thing, giving people more time for each one. I think if it's something you still want to do, it can definitely be a viable event!

I tried NTWFtober, but the prompts were tricky for me as I didn't want to write about the NTWF as such, and a lot of prompts strongly tied to that. But I really enjoyed OCtober!

Hm... I think we can include Inktober as one of the prompt lists, if we want. I never did hear what became of that controversy, and it sounds like no one else heard either, seems to have fizzled out.
Personally, I probably won't be following a prompt list this year unless Neopets comes out with one (because it's nice to be noticed by Neostaff). Instead, I think I'll just post any process I make on projects. So... basically another Spring Cleaning or NaNoWriMo-adjusted event.
I was thinking about NTWFtober this evening, and I thought maybe having really specific prompts would be nice, with the expectation that you wouldn't be expected to do every prompt. Like, for instance, naming particular roleplays like "Wrighton," "Medieval," "April Showers," "Mafia," and so on. I wouldn't be likely to make something for Medieval, as that was before my time, but I would be inspired to make something for April Showers, as that's something I did. You could do this with other prompts from last year as well. Instead of just "Virtual Pets," actually name Neopets, Flight Rising, and so on. It's a thought, at least.

I'm convinced that whoever put that Inktober book together had plagiarized the other artist's book. Some of the excerpts were word-for-word, unique visual examples identical. These similarities repeat throughout the entire book and are not just limited to one or two sections where you'd expect teaching styles to overlap. Coincidences do happen, but when they line up that frequently... it's suspicious.
However! I should say that I don't really have any strong feelings regarding that situation and those involved - I'd done my research, came to my conclusions, then moved on. Never even thought about it again until just now.
If you want to do Inktober, then go for it! I can understand if some artists don't want to associate anything they do with Inktober after the controversy - theft and plagiarism are always super hot topics amongst the artistic community.
But there are always alternatives, and when I think about what "Inktober" means... The idea of a month-long art challenge doesn't belong to this one controversial person; challenges like these have been popular across the art community for years. If you don't want to do "Inktober" then do Pentober or Paintober or Artober or... yes, NTWFtober! The name doesn't really matter. Call it whatever you want, it all has the same base goal!
I did a mishmash of prompts last year from a bunch of "-tober" lists and it was a blast.

Artoberrrrrr!! \ o /
...Although I'm probably unlikely to participate in a full list this year. I have a bigger art project that I've procrastinated on for a long time but made good headway on this past month, and I'd really like to be able to actually finish it this time. xD Additionally, I've really missed doing the Pokecember challenge in December these past couple years, and when I did do a full Artober, I felt pretty burnt out afterwards.
That said, though, I was still kinda thinking of making a prompt list (even if I don't follow it this year); and maybe if I manage to finish my bigger project early in the month (or otherwise get sick of it and need a break), I can do some proper Artober prompts! We'll see.
To be honest, I never was able to keep up with whatever went down with Inktober. x'D I never begrudged anyone who still used their prompts, but it was also kinda neat to see the variety of other prompt lists that emerged. To me personally, Inktober is just a list of 31 words, just, with a lot of visibility. And if the 31 words inspire people, good for the artists. (It's just too bad that "inktober" as a phrase rolls off the tongue much easier than many other prompt list titles, and then last year, it went from a general umbrella term to Suddenly Taboo. ='D)
And I think NTWFtober is still a really cool, fun idea! =D I like the suggestions about making the prompts more specific, knowing that one won't do every single day. But also, I think last year, the forumers who wanted to do art congregated in the Artober thread, and the forumers who wanted to write congregated in the OCtober thread--and NTWFtober kind of got lost a little in the shuffle. Do you think it would be more useful to make it a prompt list option, rather than its own event? As in, last year, I really liked how there was a whole bunch of different art prompt lists to choose from--could NTWFtober be an option in both the Artober and OCtober theads? Alternately, do you think it could work better in a different month when there are fewer challenges happening and the forum could use a fun event?

This sounds fun.
It's my first time hearing about Inktober. Usually I click around different prompts, both drawing and writing, and ignore the event or author of list. So maybe I've stumbled once on this. I knew about NaNoWriMo but never participated in it. Somehow the goal of 50,000 words discourage me, although every November I'm excited about the event.
I'd love to participate in Artober. I'll just put the intrusive voice which is screaming "you've responsibilities, deadlines" in cold, dark corner and be here. c:

I really like Lizica's idea of making NTWFtober just a prompt list, rather than its own thing. So, if anyone has suggestions for the prompts, please post them or message me! It'd be cool to have it be a collaborative thing. ^_^ I know it's kind of last minute, so I'm sorry about that, but I'll compile it and post it on the 30th at the latest!

Is there a particular way you see these prompts going, Ginz ❤? Like, are you looking for ultra-specific prompts like April Showers and Neopets, or more vague prompts like roleplays and virtual pets? Or maybe a bit of both, scattered throughout the month?

Is there a particular way you see these prompts going, Ginz ❤ ? Like, are you looking for ultra-specific prompts like April Showers and Neopets, or more vague prompts like roleplays and virtual pets? Or maybe a bit of both, scattered throughout the month? Honestly, I'm looking for whatever people suggesting personally prefer.
Last year, my promps were vague because I thought that would make it easier for people to adapt them to their own experiences. So I went with things like 'roleplays' rather than 'April Showers', because maybe someone didn't participate on April Showers, but they participated in Medieval, or Mafia, or Wrighton, or any combination of the above... and all of those could fit into that same prompt. However, last year wasn't succesful, so I don't want to go with the same guidelines of what I think would "work". What would you ("royal" you) want to see?
If it helps, they'll probably end up a mix between specific and vague, and I think that'll be more fun!

Personally I'd rather see some super-specific prompts, but I also have no plans to try the entire list. I think the very best is a mix, though. And maybe not to the point of naming specific roleplays, just because there's a lot of them, and also not everyone could do every day that way, likely.

Ooh, excited to see what the NTWFtober prompts will look like in the end!! =D I can keep keeping an eye out for other interesting prompt lists online, but I think I've at least finished putting together the list that I wanted to make myself, if anyone might feel like trying any of them! xD Emotions October Challenge!
