Aaugh! NaNo starts TODAY?! Oh my lord. I've barely done any preparation because I've been so busy all October. Last night I was at a party that I'd been helping et up all month. Woke up at 11 this morning with a cold and a pounding headache (which hasn't gone away). NaNo was the last thing on my mind. I guess I'd better stop whining and find me a program with a built-in word counter. So much more convenient.

It's free to download. (The download comes with other programs, too, like something to do graphs in. ...I'm actually not sure what all, since I only use the word processor. xD;)

I have Open Office on my other computer, but it's taking ages to download on this computer.

Hmm...this might only be true for older versions of Microsoft Word (assuming you have that), but you can try turning on an option called "readability statistics." When you run the spelling and grammar check, when it finishes it shows you a word count. Would that help?
This would be how to turn it on for Word 97:
(1.) Go to the Tools menu. (2.) Go to Options. (3.) Go to the Spelling & Grammar tab. (4.) Check the box marked "readability statistics."

I only have Word on my other computer, and it's too slow for me to dare do NaNo with. (Oh, drat. I forgot Hyper's wings on my avvie.) EDIT: Wow, so far my NaNo has...nothing to do with my NaNo. Essentially, the characters from my new novel and my old one are arguing. And one guy mysteriously hears another guy's thoughts: Gabriel didn't say anything else. I've got better things to do then argue with a teenager, he thought.
Louis cleared his throat.
“Not you, Lou. Sorry. I don't even know how you heard that.” This...won't go into the final draft, I'm sure. You know, just to get me in the mood to write. Really. *stops procrastinating and starts the actual story*

Just thought i'd stop by and wish all you NaNo-ers the best of luck for this coming month! I know you'll all produce some amazing novels, and it's so much fun seeing all the word counts go up at the end of your NTWF names. =D I have so much respect for you all doing this; I could never write this much! GOOD LUCK!!

I'm so glad that I was able to start this year's NaNo off on such a strong foot. 500 words ahead of the daily goal, and I'm feeling pretty good. ^_^ I'm very excited about this novel.

Hahaha this morning I was not really in the NaNo mood but then I started writing and look at me now. I guess all it takes is some weird stuff going on (like Fourth Walls blowing up) in your writings to get you in the mood!

I had wanted to write 34k in the first ten days in order to provide sufficient coverage for the nine days that I'm going to be out of the country later in the month, but I did not get off to as quick a start as I wanted. Maybe I'll start working faster once I get past my tests at school this week.

I am officially giving up on any semblance of linear storytelling. It is day two and my novel is hideous and I figure I might as well just skip to the good scenes so I'll enjoy writing them instead of struggling to hit my word count. (Which I am behind on!) And then hopefully the fleshing out will come more easily.

I'm having trouble getting my characters past a certain point... I wanted to start over completely, but couldn't, so I skipped ahead a few chapters. I now have a better idea of what's going on, at least. It's still nonsense, though.

Kinda with you, Allyson =/
I think I started this the wrong way. Part of me is very tempted to just restart, it's only three-thousand words...
...Actually, I'm getting a better idea now. It'll still involve a little chopping, but I think it'd make so much easier, it'll be worth it. Besides, I'm usually a couple thousand words ahead by the end of the month...shouldn't be a big deal, I imagine.
