Just as Shadow couldn't escape inhaling the sumptuous smells of steamed fish (love the alliteration, don't you?), she could not escape absorbing the carefree moods of her companions.
From where she lurked beneath the table, she looked around at everyone's feet, paws and claws. It was easy to tell who was who(m) - even when their magical mists were intermingled - just by looking at their footwear.
Speaking of their footwear - Shadow noticed an interesting pattern.
Everyone had laces.
Shadow's eyes glittered. If she couldn't satisfy her hunger, she would satisfy her need for mischief.

Speaking of their footwear - Shadow noticed an interesting pattern. Everyone had laces. ((Ooc: Bare paws have laces? )) Omni overheard what Ginz and Kat said. She understood the idea of magical energy limitations. It made sense if one thought about it, every living creature has a physical limit, they can wear themself out if they run or swim or fly too much, so why wouldn't they have magical limits too? Omni made a mental note to use that thought if she ever wrote a book on the subject. Salah hadn't yet responded to Omni. Of course, it's hard to talk with your mouth full. Omni waited until Salah swallowed before continuing. "So, what does that mean? What can you do, exactly?"

Salah's head snapped to face Omni, feeling guilty. Had she missed something? She'd been lost in thought, as she often was. Useful for someone who sat around a lot, but not too great if you were in a group that included friendly and talkative people.
"Pretty much just manipulating light," Salah told Omni. "It can be pretty limited, but you can make it look pretty impressive. And it's fun to be creative and think of unusual ways to shape light.
"What about you?"

"I don't know much about what I can do yet." She paused. "One thing that I do know is that I can sense nearby magic, without even trying."
She wasn't sure just how much she wanted to tell, after all, she might have to say it all over again before training, which would be in front of everybody.

Gen sighed once again. Everyone here seemed so powerful and to be truthful, so attuned to their magic. They knew what they were good at, their limits and where their place was. Gen just wished that she was the same - able to give a name to the kind of magic she had. Her parents had told her she had magic and that in time she would realise its purpose but that day had yet to come. Instead, Gen had dabbled in this bit of magic and that learning facts and figures but little that would be truly useful.
She scowled into her bowl of pasta listening to snatches of conversation around her. Something that the one she thought was named Omni caught her attention.
Looking up, Gen smiled at Omni, "What do you mean you can sense nearby magic? What do you sense in me?"

((OoC: I wear boots. XDDDD))
"Light is an easy element to master, so long as you try not to overdo it. The trick is to let yourself go and be one with the light. It's very clichéd, but it's true. My parents used to say the same thing, when I tried to turn off my night light with my mind when I was six. It gave me a headache, and I only learned to do it right two years later. And it still gave me a headache."
Kat looked down into her food and added, "I do air and fire too. And not just purple fire. Even ice, shielding and healing. And bewitching stuff. But I'm not exactly the best hand at darkness, or water, or earth, I'll admit."

"Hello? Hellooo? Anyone home?" Scar called out, his voice bouncing along the empty halls. He scratched his chin thoughtfully for a moment. "Anyone alive and mostly humanoid?"
He passed into a small antechamber where several old pieces of furniture lay under transparent sheets. His eyes brightened when he spotted an old grandfather clock ticking away next to an unlit fireplace. He withdrew his own pocket-watch. Bah, the old clock was 15 minutes slow. He deftly opened its lid and rummaged around inside. The minute hand crept slowly across the face until it told the exact time.
Scar stepped back and admired his work for a second before spotting a chair. A very comfortable looking chair. He quickly removed its sheets and flopped right into it, almost purring at how soft it was. His belly rumbled but at the moment he couldn't help but close his eyes and drift off.

Looking up, Gen smiled at Omni, "What do you mean you can sense nearby magic? What do you sense in me?" Omni looked over at Gen. "Well, to answer your first question; it's just as it sounds. If there is magical energy nearby I can feel it and whch direction it's coming from. I guess you could call it a sixth sence. "To answer your second..." Omni paused. She tried closing her eyes so she could focus on the feeling better. "I'm not sure... I don't quite recognise it. It might be a kind I haven't come across before, or maybe there are so many mages in the room that it's hard to tell apart. Can't say for sure."

Ginz nodded at what Kat said about the limits of magic. She knew, of course, but a reminder was always in order for her. She was so carefree... it was dangerous.
Ginz listened everyone's talk about their magic with interest. Unknowingly, she found herself in a slightly similar dilemma to Gen's. She couldn't name her magic. Elemental magic was easy to classify, but the random assortment of spells, jinxes, and hexes she knew was not. Her true ability consisted in creativity. All her magic knowledge and power was useless if she didn't use her head.
Luckily, she had a plan B. "I'm a healer, mostly," she said and smiled. She returned to her food, though she was almost done with it. If someone asked anything else, she'd reply. If no one did, she would just leave it like that and consider herself lucky.

The conversation was good, and so was the food, but her food was gone and Kat wanted desperately to see what else was there to see in Mage Manor. She was getting even more bored by the minute - sitting around doing nothing was not one of her specialties. But would it be uncouth to ask to be excused?
What else is there besides the exquisite dining hall and the training rooms and the library, anyway? Seriously, you can't have such a big fat manor and not use three-quarters of the space in it...
She wanted to inch away towards the door that led to all the other intricate corridors of Mage Manor. She wanted to go exploring already, especially to see the library.
Now Kat was getting even more impatient. She picked up the staff that had been leaning casually against her chair, inching towards it slowly while everyone else was talking. As her fingers closed around the cold steel, all it took was a single magic word - phrase, actually - whispered ever so softly.
The entire space around her chair was suddenly engulfed in purple fire. It licked at the chair and the floor, and one flame even reached up towards the ceiling like a tickling finger. In the midst of the fire, which felt cold instead of warm or remotely hot, Kat teleported herself outside the dining hall.
Curiosity killed the cat, my staff, she thought, wondering where to go first.
Her eyes scanned a small door not too far from the dining hall that was partly open. The outline of a large armchair was barely visible. Kat decided to take a look, walked over and slowly pushed the door open.
It creaked.

Ikkin had been mostly eating her food and watching the other mages converse, as she tended to do when she wasn't sure if she had anything to add. But when Kat disappeared in a burst of purple fire, even she had to do something. She put down her plate (which was mostly finished anyway, and rose to address the other mages.
"It seems that some of us are getting a bit impatient," she said with a wink, "so, it might be best if we went and did something. I would normally suggest training, but considering the fact that Kat could be anywhere, it might be best if we went to find her, instead. There are some places in this manor that look innocuous, but can do a lot of damage if you're not careful. There's this one sitting room that... well, let's not mention that." She shuddered.
After a moment, Ikkin went on. "Anyone who wants to come with me and look for Kat is more than welcome. Anyone who doesn't can make their way to the training room, which is right down the hall. There are many things to do there to increase your magical skill, and I'm sure you can amuse yourself if you don't want to come."
She pushed her chair in and walked to the door. "Follow me if you want to help out." And with that, Ikkin began walking towards that sitting room she had mentioned earlier, since it was probably the most immediate threat in the manor.

((... I feel impending doom approaching. You're a meanie, Ikkin xDDD))
Scar's ears twitched when he heard the creak. Hadn't he oiled that door? No, wait, that was gear #32. Was he still in the Clocktower? He opened one eye and wished he hadn't.
Because that's when his belly remembered it was empty and started growling like a wild beast. Or an angry dog at a postman. Scar moaned and sunk deeper into his chair. "Fooooood ..."

((... I feel impending doom approaching. You're a meanie, Ikkin xDDD)) ((Hey, I had to get this going somehow, didn't I? Hmm... can't really do anything with Ikkin until at least someone decides to follow me... so, I'm going to mess around a bit more. ^_^)) The armchair was angry. It had been made sentient through an accident involving Ikkin and a spilled potion about a year ago, and it thought that it was special. And now someone had the nerve to sit on it, like a common chair! It did not like being sat on. It made it feel used. People were also pretty heavy and uncomfortable. It let out a soft growl. There was only one thing for it to do when sat on... It slowly began stretching out to engulf its unfortunate prey. That would teach him for sitting on it.

Shadow knew exactly how to "follow" - her insanity subsided and she slipped into Ikkin's shadow. Along the way, she heard a growl and a rumble in the hall.
She wondered what sort of beast could make that noise, and whether that beast would be waiting in that room Ikkin spoke of.

Ikkin heard the growl as well. This was not good... The others could follow her if they wanted; she needed to warn Kat before she sat on that chair! Though, from the sound of its voice, it might have already been too late...
She drew the wind around her hands as she sprinted towards the door - which was now fully open; a good sign that Kat actually was in there. "Kat, don't sit on that..." she called as she reached the door. Kat wasn't sitting on the chair, though.
"If you're not sitting on it, then who...?" she trailed off.
