I wasn't impressed by Shrek, though it was watchable, and had some good jokes (I especially liked the Pinnochio jokes).
The best animated movie in the last ten years? Considering I haven't seen Lilo & Stitch, Spirited Away, Monster Inc, etc, I would say Toy Story 2. Toy Story 1 was also good, along with Lion King and Anastasia (the scene where the ghosts were dancing was really beautiful). Even Mulan was good in the beggining, even *shock* faithful to the original story at first. Then they brought in the dragon, and it went downhill from there. I've seen one other animated version of Mulan which, while being really simple, having a gimmick plot, and not having Disney-level animation, it was still kinda fun.
Now, the animated movie I'm really looking forward to is Howl's Moving Castle, planned for 2004. As some of you might know, it's a Diana Wynne Jones book, and in my opinion a better-than-average DWJ book. It's not as long and complicated as her best books, so the story can fit in 2 hours And it's being done by *drumroll* Hayao Miyazaki, same guy as Spirited Away! I think it has the story which fits closest to his style, and I am definitely interested. From what I've heard it will be translated into English very soon after the release from Japan, but I can't vouch for that.

Can someone fill me in? I mean, I understand he's an animator and he made Spirited Away, but... I dunno.

Ooh, I agree. I saw a preview for the Atlantis sequel and the artwork was horrendous-- and you're right, that's all that was holding the original up in the first place. I think I will royally flip is they screw any more movies. Frankly I go to disney movies 90% of the time for the art... some of their artwork is georgous even if the storyline is lacking... which is why I saw Treasure Planet in the first place. Sure the story line was there... but the backrounds were amazing. Did you know that they made the backround of ben's hut with a backround programme they designed to be like oil paint down to the very number of bristles on a brush? Yeah.

He's one of the best Japanese animation directors out there. He directed Princess Mononoke (Which you might have heard of, not sure...) and some other stuff that I can't think of right now. He is one of the best out there, he's like a god...only without the god-like powers.

This is a brief biography of Miyazaki's life, with wonderful links to find out more about him. nausicaa.tzone.org/miyazaki/miyazaki/

In a way, you could say that Disney was one of the makers of Spirited Away, as well as being the distributor. They did pay 10% of the production cost - while it wasn't their talent, they were paying some of the talent from their large bankroll. That's why they have the distribution rights, even some of the distribution rights in Japan.

I'd like to say that Disney has NEVER lacked for talent.
They've just suffered from the burdens of bureaucracy.

Disney cares more nowadays about the almighty dollar rather than making quality, enjoyable movies. Too bad they don't realize that very many of the top-grossers were good movies with good intentions (Star Wars, LOTR, Lion King, E.T.... just to name a few )

Disney is becoming too corny now. (cheesy should be a compliment ;P) Lion King was the best movie ever, I could watch it over and over! Too bad they can't hire good writers anymore...

They're just rushing the writers so darned much that none of them can pump out any quality storylines. But Lilo & Stitch wasn't bad... not like Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, or Fantasia, but still...

Disney currently goes more for easy bucks.
