Ahh, things are starting!! =O Everyone's recreations so far look lovely, and I'm excited to see what else people make *o* I finally picked out my own picture to redraw, and I started on that last night, so I may finish closer to the deadline X) To build some hype, though, I guess, here's the original image and a preview of what's to come: This picture is currently sitting, framed, above my mom's home office desk as an old Christmas(?) gift, forever staring at me with its horrific great character. Look at those overly long torsos! That blocky linework! The drab colors because apparently gray is my favorite color when designing characters! I actually titled this "Twillie Forms" as this was related to my novel at the time. The signature that I so lovingly censored has the date of 11/21/12, marking it at roughly half a year before I joined the forum and shelved that story for my comics, so this was basically the pinnacle of my drawing abilities for these characters and in general. Admittedly, my cat anatomy has not improved much since then, but I'll see what I can do with this. These character have gone through some minor and major changes sine 2012, making the content as well as the art dated, so I'll add those updates as well. If this were just for me, I'd probably cut the human form out altogether, but for the sake of redrawing, I'll keep her in. She'll just be... someone else.

Wow, that art teacher was a jerk. In hindsight, it might've been because she didn't understand color theory herself? When I was younger and took some chill classes for a year, one teacher was more of a sketching teacher, and the other let us play with different media and such but didn't teach any color theory. (Fortunately, I think, over time, color theory becomes more innate? Like you'll just know that these colors work together, and these won't. So your old art teacher can go shove her condescending self because yes, the INTERWEBZ and just sheer practice is an amazing source of information. ) She actually had several art degrees and was seriously accomplished! She was really just a jerk. Threw a chair at someone later that year, was not asked to return to teach the next. She was... not a kind person. I mean I get that, at the time, I was neither the best nor worst artist in the class, and that my art was entirely forgettable, but there's no excuse for how she treated me that day :/ I spent the rest of the year off in my corner... and then I stole a bunch of pencils from her because screw it I was gonna improve to spite her. xD

OKAY. So those of you who know me probably know that 1) I joined the NTWF on the cusp of 13, and 2) I have that one game I've been plotting for even longer. What you may or may not also know is that said game was first officially introduced to the world on my 13th birthday with this horrible eyesore: the colors are actively hurting my eyes, why was I so bad at digital coloring So I decided to take a couple different approaches to redrawing this picture, just for fun: Here's a straight redraw, with the characters in the outfits from the original picture. It's so weird drawing these outfits again. XD And here's the characters as they look today! They've changed quite a lot over the years, haven't they? Though if I can get sappy for a moment, I immediately knew this was the picture I wanted to redraw because I feel like this game is pretty much the epitome of how much I've improved over the years. When I first started on it, my art was not great, the writing was really dodgy, and heaven help me if I actually tried to make a functional game out of it. But now, ten years down the line, I can see just how much my creative ability has improved since then, and trust me when I say it's a HUGE difference. And I know lot of my improvement is thanks to the kind folks here who gave me tips and inspiration to become better and better. So, thank you, NTWF. <3

PFA Amazing the difference ten years of hard work and determination makes, innit? 8o Lots of improvement for sure! (At that age I probably would've not yet known how to set non-MS Paint defaults, though, so you at least get that much credit with your colors, ahaha.)

PFA - I like 13yr old PFA's choice of background colour! As in, I don't, but it gives me a sense of nostalgia because I always used to love using that kinda colour (Hex code #FF00FF, I used to affectionately call it "foof") In fact, I still do like that colour xP and for nostalgia's sake, I always use it if I need a layer or some guide lines that will later on not be visible. Also Shinko, I'm gonna claim that I totally knew how to use non-default MS Paint colours by thirteen - I probably learned that skill by at least twelve years of age xP Super advanced digital art skills, amirite? xP

And to be fair, I'm pretty sure I was using GraphicConverter, which is slightly easier to pick colors in, lol. Doesn't mean I knew how to pick them well though. So I redrew one of my first digital arts! I had trouble finding something from 2007/2008 at first, but eventually came across this in the Art Gallery thread. x3 Winter 2007: Winter 2016: I decided that the original pic was unclear and unfocused in emotion and palette, so I shifted the pose so she might be more nervous-looking. Also figured I might as well change the medium entirely to reflect my general shift to colored pencils. x3

I had this great lofty idea of trying to do several redraws before the deadline, watch me fail miserably at that. But even if I do, I completed at least one redraw, so yay for not failing miserably altogether xD Dug up this one: It was for the Borovan Day Art Gallery in 2005, so about a few months after I joined the forum, and it did in fact get in, so at the time it would've been the very best I could draw. My first thought when I saw it again was "huh, this wasn't actually at all bad". I mean, the main problem is with facial features, more specifically I tended to draw facial features all separately so they didn't quite come together as a proper face. But othern'that I found it a pretty okay picture, and then had a moment of "does this mean I haven't improved at all in eleven years, aaangst?" Then I redrew it, and turns out I've improved a lot xD I recently put my own bit of a visual spin on Taelia for a comic series I'm drawing and will maybe-hopefully-possibly finish within the next five years or so, ahaha. Mostly it's my art style that's changed. And I haven't done anything with colored pencils in half a forever, so it was high time to revisit those skillz. And of course Borovan Day just happened and I can't get it into the themed AG any more xD I'ma hurl it at the contest anyway. The previous version got in, so what are the odds for this one?

So I joined the forum back in 2005, but the earliest art I could find was some Neopets stuff from 2008 (I don't date my sketches, even though I should, and I seem to have lost all my pre-2008 stuff in some Great Computer Crash or another) - and even though this old piece makes me cringe, I figured it was also the best bet for a good redraw: Lookit this terrible old layout for my island Zafara's petpage. For the record, Island Zafaras look like this. I was honestly afraid I wouldn't be able to draw it that much better since I haven't drawn Neopets in a while, and I had just been struggling with drawing an ocean scene the day before, buuuut it actually wound up turning out much better XD Still not perfect, but way better: I feel like the colors could be a little less same-y colors are hard 8C but at least the anatomy's better and the patterns actually resemble the original art much more \ o / Whoo!

Since mine is a Christmas themed picture, I figured I should finish and post it before it's no longer relevant, so here it is! First, the original from 2003: And my redraw: This picture is very meaningful to me, because I first drew it after finally saving up enough neopoints to buy PBs to paint my pets for the first time. It was a really exciting milestone for me, and looking at it brings a lot of happy memories for me. Both of my pets have since been repainted, and I briefly considered drawing them with their new looks, but I felt it went against the spirit of the first one. I wanted to capture that same feeling, so I tried not to change much at all. I just mainly added a bit more of a background for visual interest, but that was pretty much it. The first picture was drawn in MS Paint with a mouse, and the redraw was actually done in Clip Studio Paint, which I just got pretty recently and I'm still kind of new at using, so I don't know if that was a good idea XD; Maybe I should have stuck with Photoshop for this one, but I've been trying to get used to the new program and I thought it'd be good practice too. Anyway, it was really fun to do, and it's been fun to look at what everyone else has posted, too!

@natthewriter I really love the color scheme on the redraw, it brings the whole composition together. ^^ Huntress It's interesting to see how one's style evolves over time. You can definitely see a lot of personality in the redraw, and nnnng I want Taelia's haaair. (I can never get character's hair to take the appearance of individual strands, ahaha. Possibly a weird thing to focus on, but I really like the trees in the background too. Tiger Oooh, I love the painterly feel you've got there. ^^ And how in the redraw you can tell the Zaf is flipping the coin in his thumb. I don't think the colors are bad at all, I actually like how they're a little muted from the original. Ginz ❤ Thirteen years of difference is definitely not insubstantial, ahaha. I really love the wintery atmosphere you added with the snow and the background! And the blue shading helps bring the overall color scheme together very nicely. Is it bad that at first I did not realize the bow on the kacheek was a petpet? I'm so sorry X'D

Alrighty, let's see where we started... ... And where we ended up. I toyed with a background for this and actually got pretty far into making it, but I felt that it looked cluttered and the colors clashed. It just muddied up the picture in general. This leads into what I have yet to improve; I'm often clueless picking colors, and I end up just guesstimating good schemes. The results, like this picture has shown, are mixed. For even the rightmost figure in this picture, I struggled with color, and while I think it turned out better than I expected, I can still tell there's work to be done. Another thing to fix is the placement of shadows and highlights. I used cell shading here, but even with soft shading, I'm confident that I can naturally blend the darks and lights. It's just where to put them that leaves me at a loss XD Again, rightmost figure gave me the biggest trouble with her unusual outfit, and I feel like she's lacking in both shadows and highlights. These are just mental notes for the future, though, because you can never stop improving, right? XD Looking at this alone and in comparison with the original, I'm still really happy with how it turned out. After drawing and seeing other art over the years, I've started noticing some of my priorities, namely that I am a huge stickler for clean, tight lines. Line work has always been the most time consuming step for me, and this picture was no exception. I think a steadier hand has always been a subconscious goal of mine, so, looking at this, it feels good knowing that I'm getting at least somewhere XD I just like that I can take away all the color from this and still be happy with how it looks. So basically, line work has improved, next step is coloring X) We'll see where I'm at after another three years.

I'm glad you made it a priority for yourself--I am awful at lineart and things like coloring within the lines. x.X It's so tedious... I'm always envious of people who have super smooth linework like yours. @.@ kudos to you for that dedication!

Finished mine just in time for Christmas, since I had time off work and could actually work on this. I think the original image is from 2007, since it comes after a failed NT comic in my sketchbook, and I only began to draw NT comics around the time I joined the NTWF. However, I do not date my images so if the picture is from 2006, I am sorry. It's all I could find, given that most of my art from the time was drawn on paper and thus lost. So, without further ado, Celes-art circa 2007. And Celes-art circa 2016. The wings on this one are off-colour because I coloured them from memory without referencing the original image due to me being away and unable to check. Yeah...it is clear that 9/10 years has made a lot of difference. For one thing, I have some idea of anatomy now. It's far from perfect (looking at you, left-front leg) but at least now I understand concepts such as muscle definition and skin folds. I think I learned those shortly after I drew the former image. Big shoutout to "DragonArt: How to Draw Dragons and Other Fantasy Creatures" by Jessica Peffer (aka NeonDragon aka Undel of FR fame) for that. Things actually look like they connect to other bits of tissue and aren't just stuck on. Aside from that, I have grasped the concept of shading (and gotten good colouring pencils which allow me to shade) and actually attempt to do more complex shading. Expressions too, I've improved at, since the 2016 dragon actually has some kind of facial expression and emotion as opposed to the 2007 version. One thing I learned also is combining colours. There's plenty of it in the 2016 version and it's totally absent in 2007. Probably due to the lack of shading but those go hand in hand. Younger!Me also had no concept of colour. I would definitely not use that colour scheme if I could avoid it in 2016. I guess...practice does not make perfect but it certainly helps improve. That and getting a better idea of technique, better tools and a decent work ethic, since I am overall drawing a lot more than I used to back in the day. So it means I get more practice which means more improvements. I'm pretty proud of this. =D

That's super cool to see that progress, Celestial! And for everyone, here's a random thought that just struck me... Imagine that way back when you first drew your pictures, someone showed younger!you the new version that you would one day draw, how would you have reacted? Would you be proud? Dissappointed? Annoyed? Inspired? Personally I reckon I'd either be pleased as punch, and hatch plans to be An Author TM. Either that or I'd be all defensive and annoyed at older!me for failing to appreciate how wonderful younger!me's work was... (That said, I also haven't finished my thing yet, so maybe younger!me would just end up being disappointed in older!me's lack of organisation and commitment xP)
