The January 1st deadline, is that when we post our finished art? Or is just when we should have our finished art done?

The January 1st deadline, is that when we post our finished art? Or is just when we should have our finished art done? Ayyyyy I'd like to know this, too Mostly because I did finish my thing (needed a subject to try out watercolor/colored pencil mixed media and this was perfect for it XD) and was wondering if we just post here or if there's going to be another "finished art" thread?

Oh, sorry about that, I missed the question when Rabbit asked it. XD The deadline is for when we need to be finished by, you can go ahead and post ahead of time if you like. =)

It's okay, it's okay. I'll post it later today or tomorrow. I'm kinda busy at the moment.

WELLLLL in that case I'll get the party started! XD My before vs. after of roughly 10-ish years (I honestly don't remember when this piece was done but clearly it was still during the phase where young Zoey was obsessed with fairies so I'm pinning it around the end of middle school), where I had done digital previously and did pen/watercolor/colored pencil mixed media for the after: Think what I was most surprised by was how much the composition had changed. LOL! (Again, Zoey, what's with all the gosh-darn frills D: )

I got antsy, decided to post. (Posting it in a spoiler because I rambled a lot.) So I decided to redraw this picture. Avert your eyes. Yes, it is not my best work. Far from it. It's sloppy, there are pencil marks everywhere, I didn't even properly color in the lines (in my defense, the picture was actually pretty small, didn't take much room on the paper. Anyway, this was for a Beauty Contest round. I joined on 3/23/2015 and I haven't left since. According to the URL, it was for the contest that started on 3/27/15. Knowing me, I probably drew this the day I joined the NTWF. Without further ado, my redraw... A big improvement, if you ask me. (Now that I posted this, I realize the only thing I actually kept consistent with this redraw is the pose and the candle.) Noticeable differences: -It's digita. I've gotten into digital art around a year ago once I got GIMP and I have improved since. -It's lineless. I've started doing lineless art about six months ago and again I think I improved. -Remi's design. Yes, Remi got zapped Ice and I kept her like that. Very nice if you ask me. -Cleaner lineart. When I moved into lineless art, I started drawing on the computer rather than using outlines I got from pen on a paper. From this, my lines are much smoother. -Textures. With traditional art, I didn't add many textures. Even when I moved to digital, I still didn't add any texture to what I drew. -Shading. Ooh boy, I've been working on shading a lot recently and I've gotten a lot better with the more recent pictures I've done. For this, I focused more on where the lighting was and how dynamic I wanted it. I think I did a pretty good job at setting an ominous mood. -Highlights. Same with shading. :3 -Background. Yeah, I've been adding a background to what I draw. It's very fun. Still kinda suck at them, but hey, I'm improving. -Atmosphere. Just combine the three things above this point and you can see how I've improved in putting some atmosphere and mood into drawings. -Overall design change. So my heads have gotten smaller. Still bigger than what normal anatomy allows, but getting there. I've always had a thing for big eyes. Again, they've gotten more realistic, but still kinda big. I'm still drawing in that cute art style I can't seem to shake. As I have improved, I still have lots of things I need to work on: -Expressions: You know, I can never capture a good expression. I mean, I can do it with the eyes and the mouth, but I can't seem to get them to mesh well together. I'll be working on that in the future. -Proportions: This. This is my weakness, guys. I stink at consistency when it comes to drawing. I just do. No matter how hard I try, something always looks longer/bigger/shorter/smaller than the other and it doesn't look right! I've been working on this, but I still have a long way to go. -Cloth: Cloth is hard for me to draw, kay? I think I've gotten far enough with shading that I can start with cloth, so that's my next thing to practice. Things that have improved that aren't in the picture: -Better at drawing hands and feet. Pretty self explanatory. Not the best, but muuuch better than before. -Poses. Still need work on those, but not as much as the things I listed above. -Effects. Working with GIMP has led me to try features that are offered that makes things look really cool. The only things that I've used in this pic that reflect that are the use of layers (so many layers) and opacity levels. Things that have stayed the same: -I still don't have a drawing tablet. I have improved much over my time on the NTWF. I haven't even been here for a long time and I think I've been improving very fast, at least in the last few months. And it's thanks to you guys. You guys inspire me to do more. You guys support me to try new things. You guys are awesome for that. Thank you. Now if only Remi weren't on goldban... PS: You have no idea how hard it was for me to keep this off my art thread here. I wanted to keep it a surprise for here. I did show some people on Neo, but I wanted the big reveal on the NTWF to be here.

ok this was really fun. The closest picture I had to my join date was actually drawn a month BEFORE and it happened to be one of my favorite pictures I'd ever drawn of Aerlliin- which made this all the better. The actual pictures will be in a spoiler just because they're mammoth. XD This was, at the time, the pinnacle of all my creations. I still used 'cheat' methods- dodge and burn, smudge. I did not individually draw hairs. Now, I paint everything. EVERYTHING I also have a better grasp on... well. Everything. Highlights, lowlights, color theory, values, anatomy. In 2011, I knew what one of those things were, but that didn't mean my anatomy was always consistent

Ooh, this is neat. I love redraw challenges! :D I've been doing a redraw challenge of my own for several years now. In a funny bit of coincidence, the piece that I chose to start the whole thing was from the year I joined NTWF: 2002. I sadly don't have too much of my digital art left from way back then, as I've gone through several computers and hard drive 'splosions throughout the years. I've already done the redraw piece for this year, so I can't exactly claim that I'm participating in this particular challenge, but I figured I'd post here anyway, as perhaps you folks would find it relevant? First redraw. (2002 - 2005) Second redraw. (2007) Third redraw. (2010) Fourth redraw. (2014) Fifth redraw (2016)

Ahaha, I was totally going to get around to signing up for this, but people are posting things already xP Oops Oh well! Since when did that ever stop me?! I do not draw, but was thinking of doing as Shinko once suggested with a re-write of an old story. Thing is, I don't feel my writing has actually improved that much in recent years (I am a bad human, I know. I should put more effort into my writing). But I thought I'd have a bit of a trawl through my hard drive anyway and see what old writings I could come up with. So in an folder so old I'd completely forgotten about it was an even older folder entitled "Old Stories". And in there were a couple of gems that left me STUNNED. Stunned at how good a writer I am. And not in the way you might expect, either. Some of you would recently have followed my Hero City posts in which I wrote a class full of eight-year-olds writing fanfics (slight exaggeration only). Well I actually found some of my own writing from when I was about that age, and my current ability to portray a child's writing ability is actually freakishly accurate!! My emotions at the moment are a bit of a mixture of arm-flailing "Little Reiqua you're so cute!!!" and stunned "This is kinda creepy..." Here's an introduction to one story I wrote: (Never got past the introduction, sadly. I'm sure it would've been a riveting story.) In Hero City, Jo was the only one of my characters whom I made have trouble with using correct capitalisation. I knew it was a bit autobiographical, but I thought I'd overexaggerated it a tad in Jo's case. Apparently not. But this story here is the one I am choosing for my re-write. I don't have a date for it, but I think the writing style kinda dates itself. It's perhaps not the genre I would currently pick for writing, but I did manage to read it without puking at the very least, so here's hope for being able to re-write it without too many invasive nightmares of pink sugar and sparkles... Also, as you read this, please keep in mind that I used French Script MT for body text. Apart from that, original spelling and formatting has been preserved. Rainbow
Magic Splotch One day I met a little girl named Rachel. Rachel loved bunny rabbits. She had 4 rabbits. 1 white with a pink nose, 1 black with a pink nose, 1 brown with a black nose and 1 black with brown and white patches and a black nose. The first one was called Snowflake; The second one was called Soot, The third one called Squeak and the fourth Splotch. Splotch was very perquliar. Every time Rachel opened their cage door the others would edge away as if a fox was about to appear out of nowhere and eat them but Splotch would go to the bottom of the garden and scratch about in the vegetable patch! The Rainbow One day Rachel was sitting in her room when she heard her mother call “Rachel. Splotch is out!” “Coming Mum” Rachel replied. When she got outside Rachel saw that Splotch wanted to get out a small door in the fence. Rachel opened the door and in the twinkling of an eye Splotch was out there. Full of curiosity Rachel followed. Splotch ran and ran and ran until he came to a very odd place where the grass was purple the sky was red and the trees were blue! Then Rachel noticed there was a pot of gold forming out of thin air. Then out of it like an arrow shot a rainbow. Then Rachel noticed that coming down the rainbow as if it were a slippery dip was three fairies. Somewhere Over the RainbowThe fairies said “Hello Rachel.” The fairies said flying down. “Would you like to come back to fairy land with us? “Yes” replied Rachel “Then we’ll have to shrink you.” Said a fairy. Then with a wave of her wand one of the fairies shrank Rachel. “Come here Snuffles,” Said a third fairy. “But his name’s Splotch” Protested Rachel. “That’s just his name in your world said a fairy. Then they all got onto Snuffles and he hopped up the rainbow. “We always go back up the rainbow on rabbits.” Explained the first fairy. “It’s too hard, long and tiering to walk back up on foot.” Just then they came to a huge, beautiful cloud that looked pink and they all got of Snuffles who slid straight back down the rainbow. The fairies and Rachel walked straight through the cloud. Fairy Land This should be a fun re-write

Zoey Ooooh, I really like the sense of depth and perspective the newer one has. Really has the sense of being a three-demensional figure! I do like the change in the composition, the view from slighlty above is much more dynamic and visually interesting than straight-on. Really great work. ^^ Rabbit ♠ Is the first one colored with crayons or color pencils, out of curiosity? At a glance it looks like crayon but I wanted to be sure. Lots of improvement in the shading and lighting effects! I especially like how the ice on the wings is just a little see-through. Nice touch. ^^ Flutter Very nice. =o I like what you did with the eyes- horse eyes are so dark most people don't realize their pupils are horizontal. The pose feels a lot more natural too. Great redraw. ^^ Killix Ahaha, I remember seeing that before. X3 That character has come a long way. =D Reiqua Pahaha, nice. X3 I look forward to seeing how you rewrite that~

Shinko It is colored pencil, but I can see how it looks like crayon. They weren't super artsy colored pencils, literally just Crayola colored pencils I've been using for a while. So nothing fancy. And thanks. I've been working on shading a lot recently. (If anyone looks at my art thread, you'd see that.) And I've always seen Remi having the transparent wings since she was zapped Ice because I thought it was a nice touch.

Shinko Thank you The eye shape itself has never really been a problem with me, having grown up around ungulates. (They've all got rectangular pupils- goats, cattle, deer, all equine species.) My issue before bothering to study anatomy was every bit of the horse surrounding the eye. xD It was only sometime before the original picture that I really started studying the fundamentals of art- having previously had the WORST ART TEACHER IN THE WORLD ("Don't bother learning color theory," she said. "You'll never have the talent to actually apply it." Because that's what every fourteen-year-old wants to hear) I needed to learn everything on my own. Turns out the internet is actually pretty freaking helpful when it comes to art. Who knew

XD Looking back at stuff like this is so awesome, man! And it's okay, sometimes I wish I could "accidentally" lose some of my older art just to spare myself... LOL! Love seeing the extra detail you put in over the years! In the current one, I especially like the tail design Reminds me of a hybrid with a bird! Zoey Ooooh, I really like the sense of depth and perspective the newer one has. Really has the sense of being a three-demensional figure! When I was first sketching/inking it I honestly didn't think it would turn out to be much different, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it looked as a whole. And how even with traditional media and a crappy scanner, it still looked "better" than the original digital version. XD

Turns out the internet is actually pretty freaking helpful when it comes to art. Who knew Wow, that art teacher was a jerk. In hindsight, it might've been because she didn't understand color theory herself? When I was younger and took some chill classes for a year, one teacher was more of a sketching teacher, and the other let us play with different media and such but didn't teach any color theory. (Fortunately, I think, over time, color theory becomes more innate? Like you'll just know that these colors work together, and these won't. So your old art teacher can go shove her condescending self because yes, the INTERWEBZ and just sheer practice is an amazing source of information. )
