Since you mentioned it, I have a tip on cleaning up the edges of objects in a still life if you're interested! Your professor has perhaps already mentioned not to outline objects, and that's indeed a thing to continue avoiding like in this assignment (however tempting it may be sometimes >>), so for those objects that don't have hard shadows near their edges, shading in the background behind them is a good way to define their shape. Filling in surrounding shadow is what makes those white spaces, and if it's darker around the object than inside of it, then filling in that outside will help define it :3

And now I present... my first charcoal drawing. Yeah, not the best, but I think it's okay. Charcoal was... an experience to work with. And I thought pencil was hard to erase and smudges easily. How naive of me. XD Some plades ended up darker than I intended (I'm looking at you, that one spot on the bowl). Also, side note, that bird was a bit off-putting for me in real life.

Leek spiiiiin. I was talking with a couple friends on Discord and one said that he was tempted to make a beauty contest entry with the Caramelldansen dance. I told him that if he did that, I would join him with Leek Spin. And that was how this was born.

Well, I got bored and wanted to draw, so I quickly through this together. Just a quick drawing of my plushie Xweetok. I've wanted to draw for a while, but I've been having a sort of art funk, so I thought maybe changing the medium would help. (I was trying to draw digitally, but then I decided to try drawing with pencils.) I wanted to draw this for a while. I thought drawing it with pencils would give it a nice vibe. It could have been better, but oh well. The shadow underneath her kinda makes it look like Lenign's floating a little bit, but considering Lenign's character is a cursed doll, Imma just roll with it. Also, I drew this on regular printer paper. I am so used to working on bigger paper with pencils. (I'm used to working on 18" x 24" with traditional medium, so I was working on something 4x smaller than what I'm used to.)

There's an Art vs Artist thing going around and I wanted to join in. However, I do not want to show my face online (at least not yet). But I think I made it work. Just imagine me as a chubby lop eared rabbit with tortoiseshell glasses and you're all good. (Also, arranging the drawings so that they lead your eye from one picture to another was both a little difficult and kinda fun. Whether or not I succeeded or not is up to interpretation.)

Okay, I think I might have broke my art block. I'm not sure, but I might have. Nothing too fancy. I was going to draw Junoa for the Pet Spotlight, but then my art block hit and I didn't want to work on anything. I did the majority of this today. The rest of this was drawn out for around two weeks, I think. I really like the detail I put into the jacket, shirt, and eyes, though. I like those. The hair looks nice, but my goodness, that was a pain to figure out.

Well, I finished my last picture for drawing. There were a lot more branches on the tree, but I had another drawing and a paper I had to finish for today and I would like to keep my sanity. I think it looks nice, at least.

Do you want to see my art block in drawing form? I was really bored, so I wanted to draw because that's what I usually do when I'm bored. But I've had a case of art block, so I haven't been doing much drawing lately. So I drew a rock. I think this took twenty to thirty minutes? It was fast (because it's, y'know, a rock).

Good news. I don't think it was art block. I think it was just my style going through a transition period. You know when you learn more drawing techniques and it bleeds into your regular art style? (I hope at least one of you knows what I'm talking about.) Yeah, that happened to me. I think I was just getting frustrated because my drawings didn't quite look like my style and things didn't quite look right to me. I think I either got used to my style's new incarnation. Either that or I made it work to fit what works for me. But that's just me rambling, you guys are here for art. The clothes were both fun and frustrating because I imagined the skirt and sleeves to be a thin fabric and, from my experience, thin fabric folds and wrinkles more (depending on the fabric, of course, but that's another conversation all together). I quite like the end result, though. I had a little help with the colors. The outfit was going to be tan, but a friend suggested black and gray as possible colors and I love the result.

Omg, I love it! I'm particularly impressed with the folds, but I also love the hair, dagger, and eyes. ^^ Great job!

Okay, fun story. So you know about the time capsules, right? Yeah, 2017 me told me to redraw three drawings. I don't know if I'll redraw all three of them (I do want to redraw one more, though), but I did finish one. As for a comparison between this and the original... One of the things I definitely notice is that the colors are a lot more desaturated. Personally, I think that's great, because I've been working on making more muted color palettes. Granted, this isn't very muted if at all, but compared to my original drawing, it's very muted. I think the color palette is a lot more cohesive. (I was tempted to leave out the cape because it is so stark compared to the warmth of the character, Valerie, but I did want to stay true to the original and some friends wanted me to keep the cape.) Just so you know, I still have no experience in color theory. |D I'm really just winging it. My style has changed a lot as well. One thing that happened during the time between the two drawings is that I took a drawing class. Said class included figure drawing and I got practice drawing human bodies. Mind you, I'm still not perfect at drawing humans, but I've gotten better. Some of the things I picked up made their way into my style. Such things include broader shoulders, smaller heads, and thicker limbs. It isn't really visible in the redraw, though, since I couldn't figure out how to make the drawing not look awkward. Valerie is a thin character, but I should have adjusted her limb size a bit more. The legs are something I would change, but I don't want to work on it now. Her head, that hasn't changed too much from the original. I've been shading more properly now. I can draw and detail fabric much nicer now. I don't even know what I was thinking when I drew the dress last year. No, that is not how fabric works. At least not the fabric I was imagining. The cape gets a bit of a pass, since then and now I imagine it as a thicker cloth, but the dress, no no no. At the time, I was still getting used to FireAlpaca. The way I lined and colored in GIMP (the program I used before) was a lot different from how I line and color in FireAlpaca now. That miiight be why the coloring on the original isn't the best. You can see tiny bits that haven't been colored in. It's most prominent around the wing on our left and the hair and arm nearby. I've gotten better at this. It's just that I wanted to draw this lineless because I thought it'd be fun and that's something I learned during the year as well. It is worth noting that I've gotten used to using FireAlpaca now. I'm still using it and I really like it. It's not perfect, but I enjoy using it. Maybe someday I'll have something fancy like Clip Studio Paint or Paint Tool SAI, but I'm happy with my little free program in the meantime. (My brother offered to pirate SAI for me, but I keep telling him no. I think SAI costs 50 dollars? I just don't like the idea of pirating something that's that expensive.) Also, some random miscellaneous details that have improved/changed -Sky has much more reasonable sunset colors/gradient -Grass kind of looks like grass -Blending techniques are different -Hair and tail are now spinning the right way (at least I think they are now) -No more Giant Glowing Ball of Death tm in the background -Shadow is no longer a giant blob on the ground I still have a long way to go. There's lots I still need to work on. However, I think I'm getting there. I think I've improved a lot over the last year, let alone the last few years. I think I started taking art a lot more seriously back in 2015? 2016? I don't know when, it was when my brother downloaded GIMP for me. I think I've improved a lot. Who knows, maybe I'll improve a lot more this coming year.

Wow, I really need to start doing more art. School started and it all spiraled from there. But I did do a quick thing, so here. I wanted to try a color splat / color scratch thing. It didn't take long. It originally was the silhouette, but I did decide to add and define some things so I could enter it for the Beauty Contest on Neopets. I am working on branching out, but since it was a little quick thing, I decided why not. This was fun, though. I feel like the rough paint splatters might clash with the relatively smooth one in the corner, but I really don't want to try to fix that. I think the colors are fun, though. (Then again, I was just messing around with colors when getting all this started and just decided I liked this better than the original.)

Okay, so I have recently acquired both a drawing tablet. (If you want to read the story of how I got it, you can read it here, because it's actually a pretty funny story.) Since it's brand new, when I registered it, I also got two art programs for free. These programs are Corel Painters Essentials and Clip Studio Paint. The Clip Studio Paint program is only going to be good for two years, but I figured by the time it runs out, I'll have the money to buy it for real. That's two years from now, so I'm not going to worry about it until then. I spent the weekend testing the tablet and CSP out and I got this. First full piece. I did some tests with the tablet in FlreAlpaca (mainly for pressure sensitivity while the programs were downloading) and in CSP (to get a feel for the program and to test ALL THE FANCY BRUSHES). Yesterday, I put this together. This is relatively simple to some of the things I do, or at least some of things I want to do, but this would have taken me some time with a mouse in FlreAlpaca. So yeah, I'm happy.

Eyy, congrats again on the drawing tablet! =D And oh wow, two years of CSP to go with it? =o Reminds me of my first drawing tablet, as it came with a disc with Photoshop. Glad to hear that they're still doing that then, providing some tools to use alongside the tablet! (also CSP is a good one to go with, imo, and if you do end up wanting to stick with it, it can be on the cheaper side when sales hit :3)
The piece is looking good too! I'm loving the mane, just the mix of transparencies gives it this cool depth that plays with the eyes! I'm excited to see what else you get to make with your new arsenal \o/
