Beaclon/Ducken is one of those monsters that just cannot be explained. XD
It's surprisingly not the most nightmarish of the Beaclons, however...

What has science done For anyone not familiar with Monster Rancher looking at this and thinking, "What in God's name is that" (Which you will also likely do even if you are a MR fan) this is the Beaclon/Ducken monster I mentioned above, for comparison's sake. The long thing with a duck's face and bill is the horn, by the way. (Regular Beaclons are fairly ordinary-looking beetle monsters, which makes these two super weird breeds stick out even more)

Why do I get the feeling I've seen that...thing somewhere before?

In completely blindsiding news, there is a new Monkey Island game coming out. I never played Monkey Island, but I have heard of the series awhile back when Telltale Games made Tales of Monkey Island. I heard this one is being helmed by the original creator, so this should be interesting. Hopefully good too for longtime fans of the series.

There was a Nintendo Direct Mini earlier and one of the announcements was Persona 3/4/5 (well, to be more exact, the updated versions) are coming to the Switch, marking the first time a mainline Persona game is coming to Nintendo. P5 Royale will be coming on Oct 21, while P4 Golden and P3 Portable are announced to be coming later at a undetermined date.

I really enjoyed today's Farming Simulator Direct. In all seriousness, finally got a name for Breath of the Wild 2 and a new trailer, so that makes it worth it to me. Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 for NSO Expansion Pass! The trailer did apparently say that Pokemon can't be transferred into them, but I do have to wonder how the GB Tower feature will work. Best case scenario would be R/B/Y and G/S already loaded and playable through it. But knowing Nintendo, I feel like even that's hoping for too much... Also, they finally remembered that Pikmin 4 has been sitting around in a near-finished state for years on end, so that's nice too. xD

I can probably describe Fire Emblem Engage as Fire Emblem Heroes Light version, with story and gameplay elements from previous series, or better yet, Elyos Mirage Session #FE Encore. That being said, excluding the remakes and the Satellaview game, this would be the 14th Fire Emblem game (Shadow Dragon and Mystery both have Marth), meaning all 13 games are represented in some way (via the summonable lords). I get the feeling that this game will be a tough act to follow, coming on the heels of Three Houses (and to a lesser extent, Three Hopes)

Well, in spite of my earlier complaining about the price of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass, I ended up caving in and got it when it was time to renew my subscription this month. Been playing Super Mario 64 for the first time in ages for the past week. (Which - coincidentally, was released in North America 26 years ago today) Super Mario 64 wasn't the first video game I ever played*, but it was the first one that I really loved. I never managed to actually beat it as a kid though, so now that I'm actually somewhat decent at video games I'm looking to finally do so. But boy - and don't get me wrong, I still really like this game - did I forget just how much of Super Mario 64 is fighting with the camera just to see where you're going. Thank goodness for suspend states; I think I would have torn out my hair trying to get certain stars otherwise. (Like that one in the pyramid in Shifting Sand Land where you have to jump down onto these tiny platforms from the top of the sandfall that you can't actually see properly because of the camera)
*My memory is really hazy on what was the first video game I played. I think it was Super Mario Land for the Game Boy, but I also vaguely recall playing Star Fox as a rental once, so that might have been it instead.

Man, video games sure have come a long way since the 90's.
I remember I replayed Goldeneye a couple years ago, and even though I had owned an N64 until the mid 2000's after I got the Gamecube, the N64 controller felt so alien to me it was like I was using it for the first time ever. Then again, I forgot how awkward the design feels now (I remember holding the controller with one hand back in the day on more than a few occasions). On another note, in my opinion the Gamecube controller is the best controller Nintendo ever designed. To this day I still have them and don't plan on giving them away anytime soon, as Nintendo continues to support functionality for them, even on the Switch. I even got a Gamecube styled USB controller for my PC game library.
I never owned Super Mario 64, though I played it a little at friend's homes. Now, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was my jam back in the day (along with Mario Kart 64, Pokemon Stadium and Star Wars Rogue Squadron. I did not own very many games back then.) OoT is one of the very, very few games I ever owned where I knew 99% of secrets, nooks and crannies all across the game world. Also one of the only two games in my library I would happily replay from scratch multiple times. Even though OoT had its own bad camera issues for some angles, at least OoT had a dedicated camera reset button. I don't remember if Mario 64 had that, but man was it useful.

N64 has one of the worst controller executions in gaming. 8D
The three pronged design with the joystick in the center automatically renders the entire left side of the controller (D-pad, L shoulder) unreachable in any game that primarily uses the joystick for character movement. (Unless you move your hand off the center handle, but generally... losing control of character movement even temporarily doesn't give good results in most video games.)
Plus, the joystick is unnecessarily tall and topped off with thin concentric rings in raised hard plastic. This results in nothing but pain. ... and of course, due to a really bad design flaw, the joystick literally grinds itself to dust over time with use. Having to aggressively mash the stick forward to barely move a character (thanks to the stick's self-destructing properties) combined with the stick's painful thumb-shaving texture...? oof. Not a fun gaming experience.
I still own my N64, but can't play any of the games in my collection because none of our controllers have functional joysticks any more. X'D
Though, I still think that the Wii Remote tops it in a hypothetical Bad Controller tier list. Stupid thing doesn't even have enough buttons to play some of its own games, even with an add-on.

Yeah, the Nintendo Switch joycons are basically titanium compared to the N64 control stick. xD RIP in particular to those controllers belonging to kids that had the first Mario Party... (Like me) I played most of the remake of Ocarina of Time on the 3DS (Haven't finished it, though) but I never owned any Zelda games growing up. I'm a relative latecomer to that series, as my first Zelda was Wind Waker, that I bought used about ten years after its release, lol.
I think my childhood video games that I knew like the back of my hand were probably Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, and Generation I and II of Pokemon. As I said before, I adored Super Mario 64, but I wasn't actually very good at it. Whereas those other games I've beaten several times over and over. (For a certain definition of "beat" I guess. That second Canary Mary Jiggy in Banjo-Tooie has always eluded me...)

And here I thought the Joy-Cons were bad (especially the left ones). Then again, I did own a N64, but never played it to the extent where it wore the control stick down and I didn't have that many games (Mario Kart 64, Pokemon Stadium and another game that I don't remember the name).
