((I will note now that you do NOT need a 'loid name. I'm just thinking of doing one for the fun of it, and you may join in if you want. You may want to look at UTAU's naming guide, depending on what kind of name you want.))
Strictly speaking, Vocaloid is a program where you input notes, just like a MIDI sequencer, input lyrics, and assign a voice to them, allowing you to create a wide range of songs without needing a professional recording studio, or even a human singer. The technology was originally made by Yamaha, but Crypton Future Media got permission to distribute and further develop the program, and have been seen as the official company for the software ever since.
Still strictly speaking, 'a' Vocaloid is a voice bank for the Vocaloid program, sampled from an actual Human singing artist. There are both English and Japanese Vocaloids, including at least one that's bilingual.
Not-so-strictly speaking, Vocaloids are avatars/characters for individual Vocaloid voice banks (or, sometimes, variations of existing voicebanks). They are often given an appearance based on the sound of their voicebank. The most well-known one is Miku Hatsune (to use English name-ordering - given name first), who is the one that first really caught users' attention and helped Vocaloid gain popularity.
Vocaloid users have made tons of songs about the Vocaloid characters, using video sites such as YouTube and NicoVideo to share their work (which also helped increase Vocaloid's popularity). A community has formed around the Vocaloid software and characters, which Crypton sometimes communicates with and even accepts work from. Several fanmade songs or characters have been used in official Vocaloid works and whatnot.
Vocaloids have even performed 'live' onstage as projections. (They take a projector and point it at a screen.)

UTAU (Japanese for 'Sing') is basically the free version of Vocaloid. It is largely maintained and contributed to by fans and users, who can make their own voice banks. The quality of UTAU songs and voice banks tend not to be as good as Vocaloid ones, but considering that Vocaloid software tends to be expensive (upwards of $80 per voice bank) and that UTAU has a lot larger range of voices to choose from, it can be a great alternative.
The UTAU version of a Vocaloid (voice bank or avatar) is an UTAUloid.
The UTAU and Vocaloid communities interlace somewhat. Songs made with both Vocaloids and UTAUloids are not unheard of. Crypton even accepts fanart of the 'official' UTAUloids.

System Requirements: Here – Includes a link to information on AppLocale - something from Microsoft that's meant to help you use programs designed for other languages - though you may still need to set your system to Japanese during program and voicebank installation in order for it to run properly.

Patch for UTAU-Synth, based off the patch for UTAU. It actually seems to fix a few bugs. Personally, I like to make a copy of the old 'English' files and rename them appropriately.
More info coming shortly.
