But of course. :3 Leoness, for example, always draws her characters 'naked' before drawing clothes on them.
I should have mentioned that in my post, I assume that the artist has already gotten their character's physical features sorted out and just needs a distinguishing outfit. xD; That, and since I work with pixel art, my characters' differences in body shape often come naturally depending on what kind of clothing I first put them in. Heck, maybe that's why it takes me so long to draw characters via pencil and paper, as opposed to pixels... definitely something to consider. x3

Question: How often do you guys read the articles on dA?
I've found myself reading a bunch of the Editorial News articles, especially when they're sorta' ranty. XD I kinda' like reading the ranty ones.

Hey, I just want to say thanks for responding about character design; hearing your input was very helpful. I have been trying to think more about variety in shapes and proportions and break out of the anime style somewhat. Thanks for the links, Komori; I'll have to try to find that book. I don't read the news ever, really. xD;; Maybe I should start; rants tend to be interesting. Meanwhile, I am pausing for a moment of sadness because my subscription just expired and my poll disappeared so now I can't respond to the comments I got on it. D: (Will it reappear if I resubscribe?) I don't know how I'm going to go back to browsing with ads and 24 pics per page. ;___; *goes to enter fanart contests that offer subs as prizes*

I don't know how I'm going to go back to browsing with ads and 24 pics per page. ;___; *goes to enter fanart contests that offer subs as prizes* D: I don't know about that poll thing, but I would imagine it would come back if you got another sub. Well, deviantART's 10th birthday is coming up in the beginning of August. That'll probably mean loads of contests and giveaways and sales (especially since it's special number 10!), so maybe you'll be able to win/buy-on-the-cheap a sub. They'll probably have like chat events where they'll randomly give away prizes to people who chat, and maybe scavenger hunt contests and such and so forth. I've got my fingers crossed for an awesome sale. My sis and I took advantage of that Christmas special where if you buy a subscription, you get a free subscription to give away. We each bought a sub, and gave each other the free sub, essentially giving us two years of sub for the price of one. XDDD Aaaand as for current contests, here's a few I spied (not only for you, Nut, but for anyone else interested in winning a sub or other prizes): Draw cute girls from fandoms in swimsuits! 1st place is 1-year sub. Easy to enter! Just post! Article doesn't say how this guy will choose the winner, he just says post one of your pics and he'll give one person a 3-month sub. XD Contests around dA Huge list of lots of contests, from catch-a-pageview (kiriban) to specific themed contests OR, in case you just want to browse every contest on dA: (at least, any one who posted with a news post) news.deviantart.com/browse/culture/contests/

Heh, I entered that second one. XD Thanks for the link. I've never had a subscription. I might've had one of those free trials that they used to give away to random people, but that was quite some time ago. (back when the search was disabled for guests and reg. members )

Aaaaaaah OMG some random deviant just gifted me a three-month subscription! *dies* How do you go about thanking someone for that? D8 D: I don't know about that poll thing, but I would imagine it would come back if you got another sub. It did come back, huzzah! And thanks for all the contest links! There was a brief period when I used to check dA contests fairly regularly, but I'd always bookmark ones I wanted to try and then forget about them. xD;; (Also the big ones hosted by dA tend to get a ton of entries, many from really good artists, which intimidates me somewhat.) I only started entering contests a lot when I joined a bunch of fan groups and they started hosting them. xD The year subscription for that swimsuit girl contest has me horribly tempted, but if I entered I'd forever after be a hypocrite anytime I complained about racy art. xD Maybe by the time dA's birthday rolls around, I'll be old enough to have a PayPal account and can buy subscriptions for myself. xD Of course then I'd need money... I've been contemplating doing commissions but I always feel like I do less of a good job on stuff for other people. And I remember back when they gave away free trial subscriptions! I never used mine for anything worthwhile and it disappeared after a week.

Aaaaaaah OMG some random deviant just gifted me a three-month subscription! *dies* How do you go about thanking someone for that? D8 Holy cheese, gotta love it when that happens! I have to wonder sometimes what makes random people decide to just give away subs... not that it's not a wonderfully generous thing to do! Usually the recipient thanks the person by giving them an art request (at least that's what I've seen) but ultimately it's up to you. I've toyed with the idea of buying myself a sub, but to be honest I'm a little paranoid about giving out my credit card information online.

I've wondered if I should get a sub, but I normally talk myself out of it. First off, it's my money, and I'd much rather save it for something more important. Secondly, I don't think I'm active enough to make the sub worth it. X3
But, random subs are random! Congrats, Nut! n__n

Thanks for the congrats, Mew! Aaaaaaah OMG some random deviant just gifted me a three-month subscription! *dies* How do you go about thanking someone for that? I thanked them for it and they said: So now I think I totally need to give them an art request, except I'm so bad at finishing those in a timely manner, I'm afraid it'll just be one more thing for me to feel guilty about for the next couple months. D8 But maybe it'll give me an incentive to finish those other art requests I've been procrastinating on. One of which has a really interesting subject and I've actually really wanted to do it for a while anyway.

Wow, that's very, very nice of that person! :0 I'm not nearly active enough on dA to make use of a subscription. I usually just stalk Komori's account. *shifty eyes*
*goes to add people on dA*

D8 But maybe it'll give me an incentive to finish those other art requests I've been procrastinating on. One of which has a really interesting subject and I've actually really wanted to do it for a while anyway. Well, an alternative to doing a request would be to draw a surprise "thank you" picture, browsing their faves and gallery for hints on what they would like. That way there's no real pressure on you, because that person isn't expecting it like they would if they were given the chance to make a request. :3 (And for me, the surprise gift art is a good work-around to my "I can't take requests because that would be unfair to my commissioners" rule. :B )

Ok, I have a question for you guys. What do you think of memes?
Granted, some of them are just plain stupid and a complete waste of time. However, I find that some of them are very useful for practicing different aspects of one's artwork and exploring your characters in ways that may or may not come up directly in the cannon.
I have noticed that opinions seem to be mixed; some people thing memes are childish, but others think they are useful as long as they are made and applied well. What do you guys think?
