So... really not wild about the update. DeviantART is not a social media site, I wish it would stop trying to be. I don't mind some of the changes. The statuses are kind of cool for small tidbits of information that aren't really jounral worthy. Plus your watchers can see it easily. What I don't like is the positioning of the username and message box. The inobx is kind of the main thing users access when they go on. It should be in thee center of the screen where it's always been, as that's the focal point of the screen. If not the center, literally ANYWHERE else is better then shoved off into the corner. Also, I kind of don't like the fact that people can see what I'm adding to a collection in my favorites on their newsfeed. That should be something for people to look through on their own.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on the update so far, either. I deleted the stupid activity widget from my profile immediately.

It would be nice if the activity widget didn't go at the top of your page and distract from everything else. I removed it as well for that reason.
I find it a lot easier to scroll through a feed of updates and new art than to check watched deviations manually and I suspect it'll keep me in the loop more on dA, since I had actually been using the site less after discovering how much easier it is to look at art on tumblr. They haven't removed the manual way of checking art, so I have no problem with the additional feature.
The new collections feature... I do kinda wish it had been separated from the watch feed, because for some reason it makes me nervous seeing what people are adding to their faves, and also makes me feel less free to fave-bomb for fear of spamming people. But the feed on Pixiv also shows you what the people you follow are faving, so I'm pretty much already used to it. You do admittedly find a lot more neat art that way.

Honestly I have never subscribed to the "tumblr is easier to browse art on than dA" idea. Just my opinion, but tumblr is disorganized and hard to browse, and none of the artists I love who leave dA for tumblr can seem to resist the allure of reblogging, and I really can't stand reblogging. I want to see ART, not a thousand gifs. ^^; Again that's just my opinion, people are free to disagree, but it has always been an assertion I just couldn't understand. The only thing that seems easier to me is submitting, again because tumblr is not a dedicated art gallery so there is less emphasis on organization.
I don't so much mind the newsfeed since it's easy to just remove, but I do agree that the watch alerts should not be shoved off in an out of the way corner. It doesn't catch my eye there and it's what I honestly care about the most on the site.

Themeguy I agree, the message box needs to be more front-and-center rather than shoved in the corner like it is. Right now it's less prominent on the layout than the "Shop" button which I find a little... disturbing. ("BUY STUFF FROM US oh and also check your messages") I, too, removed my activity widget. xD What an eyesore. I have mixed feelings about this update. On the one hand, it's nice that they're trying to make the site more accessible and streamlined for people who like social media sites and are used to that kind of flow. Many of the functions and tools they introduced are extremely beneficial for people who enjoy browsing the site and collecting art. On the other hand... for people like me who only use social media out of necessity, it comes off as extraneous. I was perfectly happy with dA not looking like Facebook. I prefer to go through my messages manually and I'm not interested in the site activity of people on my watchlist outside of deviations and journals. I hate the idea of scrolling endlessly through a feed to get to stuff I might care about, so I'm really glad they kept the message center. It feels quicker and more convenient for me. And my dA homepage has always been, and will always be, my own user page, which shows how much I care about browsing the site for art. xD I use dA for sharing my art and networking with clients. None of these updates help me do that more effectively (which it was already plenty effective before)--they just turn dA into Art Facebook. And I am tired of things mimicking Facebook. I am also a proponent of the "if it's not broken, don't fix it, unless it's a twenty-year-old website built solely with HTML and it looks terribly outdated" web design principle. These new layout elements are too large and blocky for my tastes, just like every other website that's trying to appeal to the mobile/tablet crowd. While it looks nice on a mobile device, I have a widescreen laptop and all I can think when I see these sites is how much space is being wasted by enormous fonts and single-column content, when you could pack so much more information in there. But eh, I'm old and cranky. xD

The only thing that seems easier to me is submitting, again because tumblr is not a dedicated art gallery so there is less emphasis on organization. The reason I find it easier is because I can see updates from all my followed artists on the same page instead of having to open a new tab for each picture, and I feel that the tag function works more consistently than DA's search function, which seems to give priority to pieces that have keywords in the titles. But, I definitely understand the feeling of tumblr being overwhelming and disorganized. It moves at a rapid pace and if you don't check it for a day, you pretty much miss whatever was posted in tags or on your dash that day, while on DA you can look through your watch stacks more at your leisure. I also absolutely agree that people should keep their artblogs separate from their personal/reblog blogs; I don't follow people if they reblog or chat too much, no matter how much I like their work, just because I have a lot of stuff to go through on my dash already. I feel tumblr is a more casual, low-pressure environment and dA is better for formal commenting and discussion, and I definitely think they're both important communities and I appreciate them both in different ways. I've just been gravitating to tumblr as I've been finding the informal atmosphere more relaxing, but I don't expect that to be true for everyone and can certainly understand why people would shy away from it; it took me a long time to join myself because it seemed way too chaotic at first, but after I began following people and customizing the kind of content I'd see on my dash, I came to feel more comfortable with it.

I enjoy using dA and tumblr in different ways.
tumblr's more flowing, like an ongoing conversation with my followers and people I follow. I really like seeing how far something of mine gets as it gets reblogged around. And I don't use it exclusively for art-related purposes--I follow the blogs of museums, zoos, and aquariums; friends; and Internet cat celebrities, as well as artists and animators who I met outside of tumblr.
dA feels more permanent and organized. I can use my gallery as a portfolio, and it's far more accessible and navigable than clicking/scrolling through a tumblr blog archive. I can sort my work into folders, it has thumbnail previews, and it's overall just made better for art showcasing and archiving. As Nut said, it's much better for formal commenting and discussion, and preserving those discussions with the piece in question. It's also where I get all of my commissions, which I feel like I can attribute in part to how well the site allows me to display my skills and communicate effectively with my clients on-site.
So I like them both and I use them both in different ways. Which is why I wish one of them would stop trying to become the other. They both have their niche.

Ahaha I know I'm supposed to disapprove of copying work but it looks like some kid(?) just copied one of my drawings and to be honest I think that's really cute XD it's cuter than mine XD I don't know how I could tell them that without being unfair to anyone else who's done it, because there's definitely a point when copying is no longer endearing, but honestly I love it XD it made my night XD

So dA changed it's logo and it's color scheme just slightly. XD And then posted a big long hot topic explaining why.
You can tell they're used to people complaining when stuff changes, lol.
