Reviving this because of recent pages! I propose we form the Let's Save Annie From Her Buttheaded Jerkface Dad Movement.
I'm simultaneously amazed by how much fondness I have for this guy (exactly none) and a sort of sad desperation for someone to save the poor girl.

I had a Gunnerkrigg Court related dream last night. It has a lot to do with the current chapter (Chapter 51). So I had a dream last night that the Anthony that Annie's talking to is actually a robot. The one part of the comic where Tony hides his prosthetic hand ended up being a clue in my dream for that. I dreamed that the comic went on from this point to only do three more chapters for the current volume (??) that involved Annie somehow going into the forest. I don't remember exactly what happened there, sadly, but I think Coyote was trying to parse out the situation. When she came back, Reynardine was also looking for clues of deception from all of this.
At some point later in the dream, I dreamed that I (not Annie) actually found the real Tony somewhere else, eating lunch somewhere else entirely. So I tried talking to him to warn him that there was a robot version of him teaching at GKC that was making Annie's life utterly miserable. This Tony was... Still a jerk, honestly. He was short with me on all his answers and he had some rationalization for some of the things the robot done, but he didn't seem to be as bad as the robot version was coming out to be. He eventually got up and agreed to tried to mitigate the situation in his own way and deal with the robot version of himself.
Unfortunately, I never got to see what happens after that and how the real Tony dealt with this because I woke up. Pretty sure this dream stems from wishful thinking. As for the current update: I understand punishing Annie for the cheating thing, and I could see holding her back a year if she cheated that flagrantly. But seriously Tony? He just drops out of the sky after years of neglect and suddenly ladles the punishments on her and decides to be super controlling?
I really worry for Annie's emotional health as a result of all of this. She's already breaking apart.
Screw you, Tony.

Oh my GOSH I am so happy that there is a thread for this WONDERFUL comic! I have no one I know who reads it and I've been DYING to talk about it to people. There is a forum for the comic but... So UGH I DO NOT LIKE ANTONY. SERIIiirrioousslly. Poor Annie. I just want to give her a hug. I mean, holy cow. People on the Gunnerkrigg forum keep saying this has to be a dream sequence but I know Tom has shown her mental state in the drawing before. Sadly I am 99% sure this isn't a dream. I really hope she doesn't have to do all of this, or something gets figured out. She cannot give up Renard...... oh my gosh. Just..... holy cow I hate her dad. Sadly I can relate a bit in the abusive parents regard.

...Holy crap.
This is either severe regression, another thing her father is forcing her into, or both.
Either way, holy crap, Zimmy, can you come punch Anthony in the face again? This time with a punch hard enough to send him to parenting school?
I'm still wondering what's going to happen with Renard. He's obviously not going to take this sitting down. Even if he does go under Anthony's control, I bet he'll still try to fight this. I wonder what he'll ultimately do.

I want to punch her father in the face. Just..... oh my god. I cannot handle the feels. Just, why Tom.... every update has been putting a ping in my stomach.

I want to punch her father in the face. Just..... oh my god. I cannot handle the feels. Just, why Tom.... every update has been putting a ping in my stomach. Yeah, when I first saw that look, the first thing to pop into my mind was "child Annie". Heck, even still looking at it now, I can't get past that. It's hard to look at how she is now and see the strong-willed teenager she's grown up to be. ...Heck, it visually looks like all the character development she's ever had has been revoked.
Daaaaang, I hope her friends can help her get herself back, but her being nearly cut off from them entirely makes that hard. And it's just... Gah. These are difficult updates.
Whatever Surma saw in this guy, it must not have been parenting skills. I'm still curious what she was thinking; poor parenting on the father's part aside, they seem as different as night and day, enough to clash more than anything. But I'unno; we haven't seen enough of that.
(Also, it's hard reading through the GKC forums because a small minority of the members are being total apologists for Anthony and I'm mentally screaming at them "This is abuse". I wonder if they just don't understand the signs of abuse, but then everyone else is arguing it and pointing it out and they're still arguing back and I'm just... No. Just no. She may have cheated, and maybe she needs to be held back a year for that, but that alone is punishment enough. Everything else is just excessive and cruel, and hardly a way to reunite with her father at all.)

Every single update this entire chapter has been a cliffhanger. And I keep thinking "Okay, that was awful, but now we've hit rock bottom," and then the next update says NOPE.

Archive binged the whole thing this afternoon/evening and have made it to the current point. \o/ Mort was a sad loss D: (more from Slowpoke News, tomorrow at 7) But time will tell how this arc will turn out. It generally seems to explain itself after a few chapters at most, although it will be pressing to not get an instant resolution now that I'm waiting for updates. <_<

The chapter felt like it was coming to a close, but chapters generally close around 30 pages. (Although then again, "Torn Sea" turned out at a whopping 70 pages, so maybe that's evening out a slight bit.) So I was expecting some more stuff, maybe more stuff with Anthony, to fill the extra pages. But then I think this is a proper place to end the chapter.
...Even if it's a super sad ending. Although I agree, a lot of stuff did seem to be leading up to this throughout... So much of the comic, really.
Question is what kind of stuff we'll expect after this chapter. This was kind of a game changer. And I have no idea what the next chapter could be. xD I guess we'll see eventually, though.

So, interesting stuff happening in Gunnerkrigg right now. So we're finally getting some word on what happened to Anthony, and where he's been all this time. Which is exciting, as it's been a secret since the beginning of the comic. And from what I can see so far, I can understand Anthony's motivations and why he would think the way he thought. It's interesting to get his perspective.
Not that I think it excuses his behavior towards Antimony at all. He's still been absolutely awful to her. I am curious about what Annie will do after this, though.

I thought today's update would clear things up for me, but I am only more confused I thought Winsbury and Janet already became a couple? And revealed it to everyone? I'm guessing Tom has a point behind this repeating history, but I don't know what yet.

I thought today's update would clear things up for me, but I am only more confused I thought Winsbury and Janet already became a couple? And revealed it to everyone? I'm guessing Tom has a point behind this repeating history, but I don't know what yet. A quick check back to Chapter 34 reveals that Janet & Winsbury actually did tell the gang (minus Annie & Jack, who were upstairs at the time) about their ongoing affair, but they embellished it with so many ridiculous details that everyone thought they were joking and no one believed them! It seemed they were content to keep it that way as well. Go back and read and you'll see; I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that chapter. They're such cute dorks. So perhaps now that a considerable amount of time has passed, Jansbury are once again back to being very guarded about their relationship status? Something more is obviously going on between the two of them that we don't know about, such as if Winsbury's pursuit of Annie was just a ploy to make Janet jealous after a little breakup, but we'll just have to wait and find out!
