Okat's hackles raised. Something unnatural was about. It wasn't the being behind Karien, but had the same amount of stinging smell to it. It's stench filled her nose, blocking out the elven smell.
The badger froze in her tracks and turned her head to Karien. 'Something dangerous is about. Be wary.' She "said" in an authoritative tone.

Karien spun around. "An ambush!" she said, loud enough for Kira to hear. "We must do something. I can only fight with a small knife, that I used before to cut dead wood."

Drawing the knife from her belt, Karien crouched, one foot ahead and one behind. The rustles continued, more powerful than ever. Whatever creatures were there, there were many of them.
"Maybe..." She breathed deeply. "Maybe, Kira, they do not speak our language and one of us must make the first move. If we move farther, they will attack. If we go first, they will be caught off guard."
