I don't have a 3DS, so I'll probably end up watching a let's play.

I really want to play it, but I don't even have a 3DS, nor do I know people IRL who have one.
Earliest I can get it is Christmas, and that's only a maybe. Until then, I'll be plugging my ears and going "la la la" about Dual Destinies.

I picked up Duel Destinies. I play it in between Pokemon and AC.

I'm gonna pick it up tonight, so I can show Capcom my support for the series. But I'm not gonna have aaany time to play it. >_> Not until mid November, probably.

Haha, as usual, I'm pretty late to the party.
I don't know how to say this, so I'll just be blunt: Dual Destinies is probably up there as my favorite Ace Attorney game. (Then again, it's been some years since I played the others...) I love the interaction between the characters-- even where I thought the new assistant (Athena) and the new prosecutor (Simon) would make me cringe, it turned out they were pulled off exceptionally well. The mentioned DLC case is surprisingly one of the best cases in the game and is worth picking up, too.
I'll concede there are some problems I had with it, but they weren't enough to make me not recommend it. I strongly suggest buying it for any of you Ace Attorneys who haven't picked it up yet.

So quick question for anyone who's played Dual Destinies: any idea why it's rated M? >_> As best as I can tell it's for entirely arbitrary reasons, but I'd like to know before I buy it just in case.

I'd heard that having the crimes/scenes depicted in 3D added just enough detail to bump it up to an M rating, versus its previous T.

Dual Destinies was pretty good. I liked the new characters, and the animated cutscenes were a nice addition. I wasn't sure of the 3D models at first, but I got used to them by the end of the first case. Some of the new voices/OBJECTIONS were ehhh... I think I prefer the clips from AJ. I didn't see the "special" case, yet. I'll have to get through that one later. SPOILARZ below: Whyyyy do you sound like that, Edgeworth? ._.
I'm not sure how I feel about Case 2. The first half seemed pretty long and draggy, but I enjoyed the second half. There were a few things that never were explained, and the whole thing was very convoluted. I like it, but I feel like I shouldn't for some reason. XD
and we finally got to break some black psyche-locks... Too bad it's one game too late. XD I'm even more curious as to what was going on with Kristoph now that we have an explanation of what the mysterious black psyche-locks are!
Also, Blackquill is my new favourite prosecutor, sorry Franziska. :'D So quick question for anyone who's played Dual Destinies: any idea why it's rated M? >_> As best as I can tell it's for entirely arbitrary reasons, but I'd like to know before I buy it just in case. A particularly bloody cutscene is my guess.

Zomg Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was so awesome. 8D Even better than Dual Destinies, I daresay. Spoilers regarding PLvsAA and DD: *backhands Layton* NO!! >:{ After going through DD, that statement is just no, Professor. 8{ I know PLvsPW came before DD, but... uhhh... iOBJECT! <_< >_> Also, what is it with Edgeworth and having an unsuitable sounding voice? XD I thought it was bad in DD, but in this game he's... oddly British. Not sure which one is worse, honestly. XD Also, also <3 "Darklaw" and Barnham. Can we assume that since they are doomed to be from a crossover, that they will never ever return in either series? *cries salty tears of failitude* woo double post 'cause this club is dead. 8D

So I beat Dual Destinies last night (sans the DLC case) and... I really liked it. =D Game's not without some problems. People really weren't kidding when they called the game hand-holdy. But I still had a few points where I really had to think. There were also improvements to gameplay. (Dialogue historyyyyyyy! \ o / ) And I feel like the Mood Matrix mechanic is a good addition to the series. (Though I can kinda see the concerns about the voice acting. Sometimes it was okay, sometimes I thought "you should've done a re-take".) There were things about the plot that were giving me reservations about the game, but after playing it, the stuff I was concerned about was actually pulled off really well. I overall liked the plot. Game-specific things: SPOILERZ I had a feeling that Blackquill might've been falsely convicted. xD After some time with him, I was starting to go "you know, you really don't seem like a killer to me". I gotta admit though; breaking him during his testimony was fun.
Not fun testimonies to break were the first of the Means testimony and the Phantom's Moon Rock testimony. The first one due to "I know where yer wrong but where do I present it, and who pieces of evidence match here??". The second one, I knew where to present and what might have happened, but I had no clue which piece of evidence would match. Though once I got it, I felt dumb, so that was probably just me. xD
Speaking of the Phantom... Usually, I could guess the killers, but the fourth and fifth case completely stumped me on the killers. I wondered for a while if it could've been Yuri, but after his testimony, he didn't strike me as the type. And then when I was trying to deduce the Phantom (before Phoenix hand-holded the player's way there), I was going "whaaaa, but none of them fit?? Have we met them yet?? I don't understand??". But once it became obvious... Daaaaaang. Well played.
That fifth case was a total excuse to bring back almost all the characters, pretty much. But it was done well enough that I didn't care. xD
I for the most part didn't mind Edgey's new voice, but I strongly prefer his old "Objection!". That's another line I thought should've been re-taken. SPOILARZ below: and we finally got to break some black psyche-locks... Too bad it's one game too late. XD I'm even more curious as to what was going on with Kristoph now that we have an explanation of what the mysterious black psyche-locks are!
Saaaaame! xD I assumed during the game that Kristoph was just really good at hiding his secrets, stuff that came out in court anyway, but now I'm not so sure. Feels like there's another huge unanswered question about him. I can't even guess what it might be. Though the last game pretty much wrapped his character up anyway. xD

So a new game was announced a few weeks ago and an anime was announced earlier today/yesterday. I guess now is a good time to speculate?

I finally finished Dual Destinies (sans DLC case which I still need to get) and it was so good aaa spoilers lol I'm still upset about Fulbright though, he really grew on me. why you do this to me, CapcomAt least I can take solace in the fact that the real Fulbright was probably an actual lovable doof. RIP Fulbright, you will forever live on in my heart </3 I also fangirled at all the return characters. Especially Klavier and Edgey, predictably Also re: the new trailer, looks super interesting! Hope it won't get lost in translation. also Maya better be in it

So, yesterday, I finished playing Spirit of Justice! (Minus the DLC case; don't really feel like dropping money it right now.) And overall, I thought it was good! Not perfect, but good. I could tell the developers tried to take steps to reduce the sheer amount of hand-holding that was in Duel Destinies, even to the point where you could turn off hints if you want. I kept the hints on, and personally, I did feel like I was leaded a few times. But it was not nearly to the point that Duel Destinies did, and like I said, you could turn off those hints. Basically, it was a harder game and I'm happy for it. The difficulty level was reasonable. So if you're worried about that, worry... less. xD The cases were also pretty great. There was really only one that I didn't like so much, but the others made up for it. (And even then, that's mostly because I was comparing it to the other cases in the game.) Be warned though; these cases are very long, even the tutorial case. And sometimes the checkpoints feel fairly distant. I ended up making use of the manual save at certain points I feel appropriate just because of how long it can take, and I recommend the same to others who choose to pick up the game. Really, even just part of a case can take hours. And... Well, I can't be general at this point. Spoiler territory! For the whole game minus any DLCs. My first impression of the Khura'in system was... Well, honestly, I thought it was a little ridiculous. I know it was probably intended to be this way as the extremism of the people responsible were made clear, but the ridiculous premise made it a little difficult for me to get into the game at first. ("Lawyers in this land are persecuted to the point they're put to death? Really?") It took me some time, but I was able to suspend disbelief eventually, especially when I learned more about Khura'in beyond the sheer hatred of lawyers.
Anyway, I still liked most of the cases; they had some pretty great plots. The one that I mentioned not liking as much was the fourth case. I know it was intended to be a breather episode, but it just felt kinda jarring to me to suddenly switch from... well, third case to the largely comedic fourth case. It also felt very disconnected from the rest of the plot and just felt like a "oh dangit, we gotta give Athena a case" thing. And then it was largely focused on how she was still seen as a green-blood newbie when Apollo wasn't considered that as much in his second game. I also felt like the prosecutor was a little annoying in this case, which I didn't feel so much in other cases. xD It's probably because in the third case, he'd been given a lot of things to consider and think about, then fourth case, nope, no development. Though I should note, the case wasn't all bad, and I did like where it ended up. Just a few things that annoyed me through the case. xD
The game was also full of call-backs. So was DD, but it felt a little bit more forced this time, especially the Maya parts. Don't get me wrong, it's great to see her again and see how she matured, and I like how she turned out. But I feel like they kind of relied too much on how much she got into trouble in the original games. Which I could forgive in case 3, but in case 5, it didn't feel quite right, like they just went with it to facilitate other things. I could also tell the game was calling back plots, which made things... a little predictable. Which ran into problems for me when I figured out the twists too early and presented evidence for those twists too early when they wanted something else, or if they wanted something in a different order. That happened to me a lot. ='D It's a miracle I didn't lose during the game from those penalties.
I realize I'm complaining a lot, but I really do like the game, so for something more positive, I did like the plot! It was interesting to see more of Apollo's past and have thing clarified (although I think there were some plot holes to previous games, but still). And case 3 and 5 were super intense and I was totally wrapped up in it. It seems like this game was Apollo's... "coming of age" is not the right phrase, but something like that? Which makes sense; it's his third game and all.
And though I still feel like plot elements and the final villain was extreme (to the point where I had trouble taking the final villain seriously), there were still a lot of good elements and a good examination of the consequences of corrupt rule. (I mean, just look at the end of the third case, dang.)
Anyway, jerks as they were, I liked the new Khura'inese characters, even the ones that were jerks (though not so much the over-the-top obvious-villain jerks; they felt just a bit too extreme as: "RAWR, I are villain!"). The royalty was cool, Rayfa's development was excellent to follow, Dhurke was cool, and... This might be an unpopular opinion, but I like Nahyuta. I can definitely see why people find fault in him as a character, but I could definitely feel his arc, I could definitely tell that he's not happy about his situation but is backed into a corner and basically mentally gave up. I can't help but sympathize with that, and also get behind his calm and collected attitude when he takes cases. Maybe I'm just a fan of characters that very calmly line out exactly why you're wrong. ...Even if he threw verbal abuse in there.
That said, I definitely do see the flaws to his character in terms of characterization. One thing I read on opinions about him was that his change at the end would be more convincing if he did more to apologize for his behavior. To me, I think he did kind of rectify things by showing that he really did change by helping the defense at every turn once he realized what was up, and also cutting out the verbal abuse. But I'll admit, I was kind of expecting more at the end with him either coming to terms with his repressed emotions (which he kinda did, but) or giving some sort of apology to the defense. Or perhaps promoting Apollo's predicted reincarnated form. His behavior speaks volumes, but I still would've liked that, and it seems like that's one thing that's bothering people. And yeah, I do get that. So... Yeah, I don't know. I can still see the flaws and accept the other parts of his character.
To tie into the next topic, his theme is also amazing and I think it encompasses him perfectly. Which describes a lot of the soundtrack; the soundtrack was amazing. Upon listening to the OST after finishing the game and being able to hear all the parts, they definitely added a lot more instrumentals and elements and it's awesome, and I'm sad I wasn't able to hear it all on my DS, but I wanted to keep it on a low volume because the headphone port doesn't work, so I've got no choice but to play it aloud. (And unfortunately, my play of the last part of the 5th case coincided at a time where EVERYWHERE in the house was noisy and I feel like I missed some of the intensity of parts because of it. =< Ah well, I'll probably pull up a Let's Play without commentary for old times sake and fill in the gaps in my memories.)
Anyway, case 5... Took foreeeeeveeeer, and I feel like that should've been split up into two cases. ='D I'm glad I regulated my own time and treated the first two parts as a case in and of itself, because otherwise, I would've overwhelmed myself. And I took a break inbetween the second investigation and the second trial, and I'm glad I did because I tried to play straight through the second trial and it took me... 8 hours. xD And I didn't take all that many breaks.
Anyway, I hope we see Khura'in in the future, at the very least for the Divination Seances. Those were a cool new feature and cool to deal with. It was like dealing with a video, but with an easier time navigating between parts. Though I did have some issues of "this is an obvious contradiction", but they didn't want me to point it out yet; they wanted me to point out something else first. Though then again, I felt that during a lot of the game. But yeah, perhaps we'll see it, especially given that ending. (Unfortunately, I can't fairly share my reaction to the last surprise of the game because I stumbled across a spoiler for that before I started the game and couldn't erase it from my head, so I knew it was going to happen. Which disappoints me as I wanted to know what my reaction would be or what I would guess, but there's nothing I can do about it.)
EDIT: Oh yeah, one other thing I forgot to mention.
I feel like the localization team had a much, much harder time with this. Especially the fourth case. xD It kind of felt like they were just tacking on "...in America!" at this point. Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts on the game that people may or may not agree with. It got long; apparently I had a lot of thoughts, but then again, I devoted a lot of time to this game. xD I wonder if there'll be an AA7, and if so, if it'll focus more on Athena, given that it would be her third game. Dunno, though. That's kind of a wait-and-see.
