What do you all think about time-traveling in Animal Crossing? I have no strong opinions about it. People can play the game any way they want.

So um. I am the proud new owner of a 3DS and AC. >__>;; I'm brand new into the game, just a few hours. My first question-- I see people talking about passing ordinances and stuff (e.g., night owl). How does that work? Do you have to have played for a certain time first or...?

How does that work? Do you have to have played for a certain time first or...? Once you get a 100% approval rating (should take only a couple days of planting/watering, doing Isabelle's tutorials, change town tune/flag once each, donate something to museum, fish up trash and pay for it at Re-Tail, talk to villagers until they're tired of you), you can wait until the next day and then "flex your mayoral muscle" by passing ordinances and starting public works. Ordinances change aspects of the whole town (whether flowers ever need watering/whether weeds show up, whether people/shop owners get up earlier or stay up later, whether items buy and sell for more), cost 20,000 Bells, and take effect the next day. Of course, you can only have one of the available four active at a time. Public works are physical objects or places you can put in a town (e.g. new bridge up to max of 3, bench, Reset Surveillance Centre), you can only install one per day (though they're cumulative overall) but not while a previous one is still in the donation/building stage, and you can unlock more through villager suggestions or doing certain in-game tasks (e.g. talking to Isabelle while she's asleep, having a "perfect" town for a long time, talking to Blathers every day for a while, random "excited approach" remarks from villagers). (by the way, friend cooooodes. Again, mine's 1547-5651-2893) And I just realized last night that you can go to the island multiple times per day. And that the nighttime music is really nice and much less repetitive-sounding than the daytime one.

Sweet, thanks for the explanation. 8D Stupid question-- to water things I probably need to buy a watering can, yeah? Which I assume will show up at Nooklings sooner than later? :3
... I have no idea my friend code. xD How do I figure that out?
Finally, is it possible to have more than one town at a time...? I'm still not entirely sure I like the map of the one I picked but don't wanna have to delete it to make a new one. >__>

I'm still not entirely sure I like the map of the one I picked but don't wanna have to delete it to make a new one. >__> Actually, the Watering Can doesn't show up until you have a Gardening Centre (or visit a friend's), but if you do Isabelle's tutorials/advice, you can eventually buy one from her. From the Home Menu, click the orange smiley face up at the top near brightness/Internet browser, and you can see what your own friend code is as well as add others'. You can only have one town at a time, unfortunately. :/ What is it about the map that you don't like? Remember that you can always build up to 3 bridges, too. Also, awesome new controls. You can press left and right d-pad to cycle through the tools in your inventory, down to remove your equipment, and hold R to go through dialogue faster (like its function in StreetPass Mii Plaza).

I dunno quite why I dislike it. It's just... well, it definitely needs another bridge. I thought the beach was gonna be bigger but the entire left half of it is inaccesible/a cliff (dunno if that's how it is on every map?). It has a lot of little ponds which I like, though. If I'm gonna start over I oughta do it now while I only have 90 minutes into it but I don't know if what I'll end with will be even worse. >__> TBH, part of the problem is I have no idea what constitutes a "good" map. Maybe y'all can tell me if it's truly bad or it's actually decent? XD *shrug* Since I dunno how to take a screenshot of the lower touch screen, here's a cell phone pic of my map: The entire beach to the left of the bridge is inaccesible (didn't know how to "read" the access points when I chose it). :/ And it for sure needs another bridge or two.

Weird that you've got that bit of beach cut off, but you can swim to it once you get a wetsuit (I bought mine off the island). Besides that, it's not too bad. Definitely needs some bridges, and the Town Hall is a bit more distant from the rest of the town, but other than that, it's not too bad. You won't really find much different from other towns, besides that bit of beach problem.
Also Coaster, you don't need to have caught trash, changed town flag/tune, or finished Isabelle's tutorial to get 100% for Mayor position.

That's more accessible beach than my village has, actually. You can randomize the points of access by cycling through Rover's options when you make your town; I tried to get one with a well-defined top-bottom split , no long, narrow peninsulas, and beach access across the board. Since you just got your game, it's probably the best time to change your town if you don't want to live with it later. EDIT: Right, Komori, but those all contribute to it.

The only thing keeping me from starting over is that Nooklings had in stock the net + shovel the first day, which are useful, and I'd hate to restart and find they only have in stock the shovel and axe or something. >__>;; I still need a fishing rod, but at least with the net I've been catching bugs.
Oh and I found my friend code, PM me if you want it, would rather not post it in public. :3
EDIT - Eh, I'ma go for making a new town. The cut-off part is kind of driving me crazy so I'ma see if I can't get a more balanced map.

The only tools you can get from the first Nookling store are the shovel, rod, and net. The axe and watering can are from the Garden Centre, and the Megaphone/Slingshot/Timer are in the first upgrade. (You can still get balloon gifts if you use a net on them when they reach a cliff, though.) Also, you can pick a net or a rod during Isabelle's tutorial if you pick the right dialogue options.
By the way, people can't interact with you unless you add their Friend Code as well, just so you know.

Start-over attempt 1 sucks. Hate how my character looks. XD Trying again haha. Is the garden centre something that gets added? Oh! I'll post my friend code soon then.

Start-over attempt 1 sucks. Hate how my character looks. XD Trying again haha. Is the garden centre something that gets added? Oh! I'll post my friend code soon then. All the looks are actually pre-defined, so you can get the same look and clothing every time by answering the questions the same way. And you can see the final result with a quick online image search or an online guide. I think the eye colour may be random, but you can change that later on anyways. Yeah, Garden Centre gets added after you plant, weed, or water a total of 30 flowers/weeds/trees. You can probably get it on day 2 if you just pick a flower and re-plant it over and over, but I haven't tested that myself.

Thanks! XD I'm on attempt three now because I disliked all of the possible layouts the second go-around. >__> Crossing my fingers hah. Gonna make it earlier in the day and then do minor time traveling later so I have time to pay the down payment back today. EDIT - Up to attempt five. XD I keep getting a lot of stupidly fragmented maps. >__> Figure it's better to waste time doing this now than hate my town for the rest of AC playing time haha. EDITEDIT - Fifth time's the charm. Got a map with all important buildings on one side, nice beach, I'm happy with it!
