I just finished watching Madoka Magica... It wasn't what I was expecting. I was actually expecting it to be a lot more twisted, more horror, more death, more everything, and... It was actually pretty tame. The story was done well and the characters were good, especially later on in the series. Overall, I liked it. Because young girls being forced to fight eldiritch abominations and die gruesome deaths for the sake of the universe isn't dark enough for you?

I think the stuff I heard was way more exaggeration then it actually was. The way I heard things sounded like I was going to see brutal deaths for all of them. And I mean see it, not like the head part, where you know what happened, but don't really see it. So I think I was just prepping myself for this stuff and never got it XD I hear other people compare it to crazier and more brutal series and stick this right next to it, but I don't think it belongs witht those series at all. It belongs over on the side, in it's own category for the way it's done.

To me though the psychological stuff going on there is way darker than your typical violent action anything. Not that I don't love violence, mind. Just out of curiosity, what are some the shows you heard people compare it to? I know Eva gets brought up all the time. (if I hear 'deconstruction' one more time...)

I heard Elfen Lied, Higurashi, and Eva mostly. Sometimes they throw a few others that I haven't really heard of.
I sort of have a dark sense of humor as it is. So just some psychological stuff doesn't do a whole lot to phase me XD

I usually find psychological stuff more chilling/disturbing than outright violence or gore, myself. The latter just tends to make me feel sick for the time that it's on the screen, but the former actually sticks in my mind and makes me think. So I prefer psychological "darkness", although on a whole I tend to like more upbeat entertainment. xD
I did find Madoka Magica very dark in the psychological respect, but it's true that not much is really shown. I'm personally glad they handled it the way they did and didn't go the shock route, but it does seem like it needs a category of its own.

To counteract Madoka Magica I started to watch a trio of shows.
Squid Girl for pure stupid comedy. This series is great. It's pure comedy and full of awesome XD Toradora, I've been reading the books as they release them in English. It's a funny romantic comedy sort of series XD Denno Coil, I'm not as far into it as the other series, but it's pretty good from what I've seen. Really odd, but funny. And it has some weird moments too.

(it is gorgeous and intriguing, though). i remember hearing good things about toradora but it didn't really seem like my type of anime. i actually didn't get around to watching as many series as i would have liked to over the summer. i only managed to finish soul eater and baccano! and i'm a couple episodes away from the end of durarara!! (but i did absolutely love all three of these, haha, so i guess it was worth it).

Yeah all three are really good series XD Soul Eater is sort of a hit or miss to some, but most seem to like it. Like the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime, it steers away from the manga at one point (I think the manga is still going, but really slowly, not sure). I sort of hope they pull a Brotherhood for that series in the future XD
I started reading the books of Toradora first. So I got used to the way the series was, so the anime isn't that new to me, but it's entertaining.

yeah, i haven't finished the manga yet(it's awful fanservicey...) i've heard a lot of wishful thinking about a sequel or brotherhood-type revamp, though.
i can see how it would be a hit and miss for some, ahaha. especially the ending, which people seem either to have loved or hated(i'm one of the latter). something happened toward the end of the series and it just fell apart entirely. overall it was pretty good, though. really unique and vastly entertaining most of the time, i thought. there were only a few episodes i can remember being bored by. excellent characterization and art, too.

Yeah, the anime toned down the fan service a lot XD
Edit:
Well I finished watching Squid Girl, well at least season 1 and two mini specials. I'll be waiting for the second season to be dubbed. I liked the series a lot XD

It's a sort of series I can see them making movies that just retell the series. It's short enough, and easy to cut out small things to fit into movies. Heck they did it for Gurren Lagann with added stuff.

Been watching the dub of Nura: Rise of the Yokai clan. Only 4 episodes are out sadly... But still fun to watch.
