I got hacked by a cookie grabber on my account stickycattabby. They took TeTeTe, 7mill from the bank, and 4.3k worth of unbuyables. I got TeTeTe and 7 mill back, but only 2 items out of...alot. Cookie grabber sites are something you cant tell by just looking. If you think you've encountered one, change your pword immediately, delete your cookies, and change your pword again. This was a horrible experience for me. They hacked some people in my guild...and admitted to hacking 38 total, obtaining 200mill total. This is the perfect hacking method, unfortunately. You won't see it until they've taken everything. The grabbers are on non-neopets sites only. So if you dont like the looks of something (it can be a totally innocent page too ) delete your cookies and change your pword ASAP. I don't want any more repeats of this.

This is one of the reasons I always keep a firewall on my computers. With a firewall, they can't get your cookies. If you want to test your system, go to this website: www.grc.com and select the "Shields Up" section. The site also has many other computer security items you can test, and download. The firewall I like to use is Zone Alarm. That combined with an Internet router (for a private network) does a good job of making sure my cookies are only eaten by ME.

Ereeeeeep ereeeeeeeeep!!!! <<- Guinea pig noises for Sticky!
I'm sorry, Sticky, that must have been REALLY awful. But you got your pet back, which is the most important thing, and you also got your money back, which is wonderful.
I know that my Dad installed some sort of firewall on this computer, that he is confident in it, and that we have had internet access for five years now and have NEVER been harmed by a virus or cookiegrabber.

I DO have a firewall, AND an automatic cookie deleter! The only time a firewall can't protect is when YOU request the info to a person. The site had JAVA codes which allowed that to happen. So no one is safe with a firewall. And everyone needs some sort of cookies in order to play neopets, otherwise you would never stay logged in.

Yes--Cookie Pal is good too; it helps control cookies.

Something like this happened at NTAG too - I took the precautions of setting my browser so it would flush out all cookies when it was closed, removed my stored passwords, changing my password, and making my browser ask me before setting a cookie. When the threat seemed to be over and I got sick of logging into Neopets each time, I restored the old system, but I still make my browser ask me before setting a cookies. I only accept if I think it's necessary (namely logging in).
Securing your email is another good idea. Hotmail is automatically secure, and Yahoo mail has secure logins as an option.
There are other benefits to being picky about cookies. I think I'm getting less spam.

Thanks for the info and the link. I checked my computer and there was a problem because the netbios thing was somewhere potential hackers could get in, i followed the instructions and managed to disable it and make it safe and i also installed the free ZoneAlert firewall thingy.

My firewall hates me. One of my friends through Neopets is very talented at hacking computers. He probably knows my password, but he doesn't want my account... he already has too much freakin' money. So recently my mom made me download Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security. Cost her (not me, she's the one that put it on anyway) 40 dollars (American), and the biggest piece of crap that's ever been on my poor little laptop. It takes up a lot of space, and I realized the day after downloading that I had to disable Internet Security every time I looged on. Why? It prevented me from playing Neopets. And it wasn't just the games. I couldn't access my Neomail Inbox, my guild, my shop... I was screwed if I didn't turn it off. I threatened to delete it, but then the program said if I deleted Intenet Security, Anti-Virus would've gone too, but if I wanted, I could delete Anti-Virus and not Security! Since my computer: 1) Froze at least twice a day or so; 2) took forever to do anything; and 3) should've been thrown into a landfill to never be seen again, my mom brought it to Best Buy, and as a late Christmas present, paid for it to be upgraded to 192 mb of RAM (from 64). Now we're talking about getting Windows XP, but to do that, I need more memory (I have 5 gigs total, 4 used.) So we need to find a place that installs memory onto Gateway notebooks, and then... ...I'll be happy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
