This buying-selling process feels similar to stock market. Releasing small amounts of shares - wouldn't it be similar to this NFT thing? Only without pictures?
I agree, that attracting people with random (sorry - ugly) pet customization pictures is an absurd idea. If you sell something, at least wrap it in a nice package to attract the attention of potential customer.
I'm an optimist. Despite the plain and dull appearance of NFTs I hope that these codes hold some cool features. You know, like collectable cards - some are rarer and more expensive, some are more common and cheaper... I'm just fantasizing. I still don't understand how and why NFT work.

It is similar to releasing shares, and I think that ultimately what they're trying to aim for is more or less what you're describing. But there are some major differences between NFTs and stocks. The biggest being that buying stock in a company means you're literally buying part of that company, so the value of the stock is tied to the value of the company (or at least investors' perception of the value of the company). On the other hand, NFTs aren't backed by any actual asset, so their value is just how much people want to collect them. Which is why people are calling this an economic bubble.

Basically, NFTs are a scam.
When you buy an NFT, you're buying a receipt for some arbitrary code on a block chain. (Sometimes the images/media used to mint the NFT are even stolen from random artists on the internet!)
If you want a pic of a Neopet character, it's free to make one yourself. You don't have to pay Neopets for a non-fungible (valueless) arbitrary code of one. As Fraze said, the only value is in what people are willing to pay for it. It's a bubble that I don't forsee lasting very long.
Children are especially vulnerable to scams like this as most have yet to completely grasp the value of money. This is why we get stories about 10 year olds accidentally buying millions in micro transactions in gross predatory mobile games.
NFTs (a scam) aimed at kids (with fun kid-appeal characters like Neopets) are especially disgusting.

I wish they'd work harder to fix the actual site. So far, almost every single side adventure has been a bust, from side games, like Ghoul Catchers, PetPet Park, Letters & Legends, and even Island Builders (currently broken in Beta). All of their merchandising attempts have pretty much failed.
The only thing that's survived is the main site, and it's limping along, post Flash, with minimal functionality.
NFTs are a waste of time and computer code.

Another Neoboard post, this time from the aftermath on Discord, but there's also a couple of disclaimers regarding the project. Jellyneo has the rundown of the controversy. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not that they're distancing themselves from the company responsible for the NTFs, but they're still associated with it, in a way. EDIT: The old post was updated to change a few lines. Here is the new post

This concept is 100% lost on me. I mean, I've read about it, and kind of understand it, but I just don't GET it. So... you... pay money to own a link to some random Neopets artwork? And then... you hope you can sell it to someone for more? Even though it's basically.... nothing? I mean, I almost feel like it's trying to charge people to breath the air in a certain room...
In a somewhat related note, there is a pretty hilarious clip of the announcer of the St. Louis Cardinals (baseball team) reading a promotion for NFT's, and it's abundantly clear that they just handed him something to read, because he can't even get through reading the first line before he goes off into "What does NFT even stand for? [fellow anouncer] do you know? What are these? I don't even know what this means." And it's basically three minutes of him trying to figure out what in the world this even is.

As my contribution to this thread, a recent scam involving NFTs showing just how worthless they are and how stupid are the people who participate in them. To also posts some additional thoughts I have (though I agree with everyone else): * A Blockchain being "Environmentally friendly". Burning garbage with natural charcoal instead of a chemical igniter is more "environmentally friendly" but doesn't mean you're still not releasing a ton of unneeded pollution into the air! * I'm going to say it looks like TNT are not involved in this (and hopefully that means work on the site is unaffected), but that further concerns me about who's profiting off this. Some people have defended that this would help put money in TNT's pocket to improve the site... but would it? Or is it just going to line the pockets of JumpStart executives and people running the blockchain with very little if any being put back into the site? I'm going to say more the latter unfortunately, evident that TNT didn't know about it until after it was made aware by the public and the upper management put pressure on TNT to "show their support". BTW, Herdy did some digging, and apparently Solana's (the blockchain company that's being used) previous NFT offerings costed 3 SOLs (their own currency cause Bitcoin is too mainstream now). How much does a single SOL cost? 150 DOLLARS! And this is for an image of a Neopet that you can't do anything with! Meanwhile you can go onto the site, create your own Neopet, make them a Species & Colour you want (granted you'll need NP but there's plenty of ways to start earning it), dress them up like you want (once again would require NP or NC), do activities with them & care for them, and all for FREE (or at least doesn't cost you 150 bucks! Oh, wait, I mean 450 if they go with the standard 3 SOL). Or, if you just want to dress up Neopets, use Dress To Impress! So, yeah, to further show this should have nothing to do with Neopets, this isn't directed toward Neopet users because of the big entry fee. Hey, JS management, from what I can tell those who participate in NFT have poor taste in art so you could have done anything else and left Neopets our of your schemes. * Which of course has led us to the various controversies I don't think we have discussed here yet. Luckily Herdy has collected all instances on one of his Neopet's petpage. A quick look through: ** Stealing Art from "Dress To Impress". So since this Metaverse thing isn't working directly with TNT they don't immediately have access to the customizater. No problem, they just need to contact TNT to gain access or have TNT generate thousands of random clothing sets for them... OR they could steal the work of a fansite. But to further show how little the Metaverse people actually care about Neopets, they didn't take into account that since the fansite doesn't have access to the actual customization tool and their own version may have some quirks causing an image to come out looking different. For example, the Dimensional Neopets having a different color hue. And that's what happened, they used a Dimensional Kougra which was affected by the color changing quirk only on Dress To Impress, thus revealing all the NFT images were made using their tool. So they're going to pay Dress To Impress for using their tool, right? Or they're going to junk the thousands of images they made to make "official" ones using Neopets actual customization tool, right? Oh, no, they're just likely going to fix the incorrect colored ones which are absolute proof they stole from DTI and then go "prove it" that they use their tool to make the other Neopets, aka something they can't prove. What nice people. ** Defending A Homophobic Slur. Which leads us to the next controversy, blatant homophobia for a site that is supposed to be LGBT+ supportive! Someone posted a slur on the Metaverse offsite community and when reported a mod going by "NinjaPenju" refused to delete it, said would be difficult to moderate all forms of the term (it's not, it's simply adding words to the filter), and called everyone reporting it FUDs (acronym for "Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt", it's used by those who participate in NFT to refer to people who make people question whether supporting this obvious scam is a good idea; also best way to garner support for a project for those interested in is by insulting them). Long story short, after a lot of noise that JS and the Metaverse staff couldn't ignore, they removed NinjaPenju (not sure if they fired them or not). Oh, also to try and save their bacon, NinjaPenju did delete the post with the slur and eventually added at least "gay" to the filter showing they perfectly knew how to do it. Oh, and apparently there is still transphobic behavior going on (mainly intentionally misgendering) yet the mods tell players to ignore them, though mentioned anyone who they thought was FUDing would be kicked (which, considering the above, seemed like a threat directed to those reporting the behavior). ** Hushing On The Site. It was confirmed offline by a TNT staff member that TNT were essentially on a gag order and limited what they could say about the Metaverse. This came to a head when a winner of a recent Beauty Contest: a Mutant Korbat with an anti-NFT sign on their tail drew by nenislinds. However, though the winner got their 1st place trophy, no mention of them were on the News and their presence was also scrubbed from the Beauty Contest page! Being the Beauty Contest community is one of Neopets biggest communities this got a lot of attention that TNT added the winner back onto the Beauty Contest page (but not the News) and made the image lower quality to try and make the sign unreadable. It remains unknown whether this was an order done by JS upper management or TNT were trying to avoid further NFT discourse, either case is of course bad but one looks better on TNT at least. * Finally, let's remember they tried this before this CryptoQuest which failed to even launch. Even if this gets to the launching phase, I would be shocked (and further lose hope in humanity) if this makes any significant money it was worth all the controversy.

(And are significantly nicer to look at)

Jellyneo has an 'update' (if you can call it that) from the Neopets Metaverse, more specifically, a 'roadmap' of sorts (again, if you can call it that). From the snippets that I've read, it seems like will try to milk us for all the money in the 1st stage, make it a play to win/earn in in the 2nd, and then decentralize the concept in the 3rd
Just hearing that, no, just no.

So I guess my stance is: Nay to NFTs for basically all the reasons all the others and Jelyneo pointed out, and I really hope Neopets backtracks because this is seriously what-the-heck. But first, I generated my Neopets Free NFT and... I think that alone sums it up. EDIT: Since mine lasted as long as some real NFTs (xP), a description! Mine was an elderly xweetok, tan-colored with a pale red mane, wearing a long grey-haired scraggly wig, and holding an expression akin to one who has just sucked a lemon.
