For anyone familiar with LucasArts' old Monkey Island computer game series, you should remember the art of insult swordfighting well. For anyone else (and I fear it may be the majority of you), insult swordfighting is just that - the exchange of comical insults to the clang of swords (though we'll have to cope with imagining the latter, of course). If anyone's interested in trying this, the rules are below--
How To Duel:
Well, when pirates battle with swords, on sea or land, they must insult one another. Each insult has an appropriate response, for example:
PIRATE 1: Only once have I met such a coward!
PIRATE 2: He must have taught you everything you know.
In this case, Pirate 2 has successfully replied to the insult, and gets to launch his own insult. However, if you do not know the reponse, you back down like this:
PIRATE 2: I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle!
PIRATE 1: I am rubber, you are glue.
This means Pirate 2 can insult yet again, but if Pirate 1 had responded correctly (I hope now you´ve learned to stop picking your nose) then they would have been able to insult next.
However, at sea all you insults have to rhyme. Example:
PIRATE 1: Every enemy I've met I've annihilated!
PIRATE 2: With your breath, I'm sure they all suffocated.
As with all insult swordfights, if you cannot respond to an insult three times you've lost. This doesn't have to be consecutively, as (for example) you can fail against the first two insults, win the next two, and then lose on the fifth.
If someone uses a new insult to which you don't know the answer, remember it and use it against other people. This means that if they don't know the answer either, then it's a sure-fire win for you, but if they do know the answer, you know it for next time someone uses it on you.
Also, if you're going to make up your own insults (whether for sea of land) always make them in PAIRS, both an insult and a reply. However, if your opponent can make up a suitable response on the spot then that's allowed.
To Start A Duel:
Make a new post, stating your piratey name, the name of your opponent-to-be, and the reason for duelling. Be creative; try to make it sound more interesting than "for fun" or "you suck lol".
Name your rules: Land or Sea. Remember, at sea all your insults have to rhyme.
Wait for your opponent to respond. If they do not wish to duel, they can back down like a spineless coward. However, as with all insult-swordfights, the defender starts, and they must make the first insult.
Match their insult if you can, or just say "I am rubber, you are glue!" "Oh yeah?" or similar if you can't respond. If you successfully match their insult, then you can then state your own insult beneath. If you can't match your opponent's insults three times during the match, you're out.
You can use insults from the Monkey Island games, but be aware that skilled players come up with their own insults, and almost everyone knows the answers to MI insults. Try to keep swearing out of things, please.
In Sea-rules swordfighting, the following words are forbidden at the end of insults: orange, purple, silver, and month. Don't rely on tricks to win, that's just not cool.
Once engaged in a duel, try to remember to quote the other person's last response; things can get awfully messy if more than one person fights at once.
((For anyone still insanely confused or needing to see an example of a fight in action, try going here: www.livejournal.com/community/damonjager/626.html.))
Also allowed here is the discussion of insult swordfighting, techniques, good new insults/responses and other piratical talk. Heavy use of the word "yarr" gets you bonus points.
And with that said, let the dueling begin!
