TDP Watch Night Season 1 wrap-up.
Oh no, this is going to be a long post.
Super spoilers. Don't read unless you've seen all seasons!
The Dagger and the WolfEzran is fine!
'cause as we've seen, he's immune to extreme temperatures! Oven-Hot pastry? Touched with no problem. Taking a dunk in a Frozen ice lake for a couple of minutes? Pfft, just chillin'!Callum passes the time by drawing masterpieces in his notebook.
In an earlier episode he mentioned that being called a "mage" was really important to him because he didn't have a Thing that he was good at... but LOOK at them art skills! These skills were also shown when he drew that room in the Banther Lodge for Rayla. It was a perfect match down to the last detail, and he drew it without a reference. Does he have photographic memory? 'cause he can also perfectly recall magic runes that he saw someone do just once. I think he might. XD
Egg is all "dim and flickery". Oh noes! If sky dragon eggs are anything like lightbulbs, a burnout is imminent!
Claudia and Soren arrive at the lodge, but their tracking doggos quickly lose the trail.
Thankfully, they brought with them Plan B! Janky animation! It haunts throughout the rest of the episode. :DErr, and also, Rayla's arrow'd braid of hair allows them to track her down using dark magic. Again, great job Callum!
Rayla's human disguise is hilarious.
Human Rayla enjoys hangin' out with other humans, and her favourite topics of discussion are money and startin' wars!
Ezran: It checks out!
"Just walkin' into town without a care in the world, despite my sub-century life expectancy!"
Well, now I wonder just how different the various elf lifespans are from a human's. XD *eyes some of the elf characters* How old
are you?
Sunforge dagger guy is random and never shows up again after this IIRC, but he serves two pretty good purposes: One is to hint at the Sunfire elves who will appear in season 2. The other is to show that even magically augmented artifacts cannot cut through that assassin binding. It's a tight fit. To the soul.
As I said during the watch, "The one match up that the 1000 degree knife cannot win."
But that's alright 'cause Rayla "asks nicely" to borrow the dagger by stalking and cornering the guy, then CQCs him to nab it when he's like "Oh no, an
assassin elf!" and... Rayla's hand is MAGICALLY CURED thanks to QUALITY ANIMATION!! \ o /
Oh wait, nope. It's back to being all purble and sad in the next shot, nevermind.
Random animal doctor guy confirms that the egg is dying. But hey, there's a miracle healer on that terrifying mountain full of horrors, y'all should check that out!
Ellis and Ava are a sweet pair. :'D
Claudia reveals the secret glowy pretty magic teeming cave. "Still think magic is creepy and gross?"
Well, Claudia... the magic itself is fine, it's when you take the pretty magic fireflies and SMOOSH THE LIFE OUT OF THEM, WITH A GLEEFUL SMILE. That's what's creepy and gross. :D
Shoutout to the Bait + snow elf and Soren doing pushups (with Claudia's help) credits illustrations.
Cursed Caldera"How do you plan for indescribable terrors?" is a good question, Ezran.
Callum comes up with a plan: Flashlight, bark bark, blow out the candles, use an actual weapon!
What if the monster has no eyes, can easily track sounds, enjoys a gentle breeze and is covered in blade-resistant scale armour? :'D Well, I guess they didn't have to worry, anyway, due to all of the indescribable horrors on the Cursed Caldera actually being illusions in the end. XD
Viren brings a tray of exotic Xadian fruit to his prisoner, Runaan. *squints* Is that a tomato on the tray?
Runaan refuses because he's already dead.
Hmm... Viren eats that orange slice whole. Either Xadian oranges have edible non-bitter peels, or Viren is just that bold.
Maybe it's a very subtle form of intimidation. "I WILL TAKE THIS ORANGE SLICE... AND EAT IT!!"Runaan is offered his freedom, but that doesn't work, either. Runaan has accepted that he is already dead, so he will not fear death.
Viren: Challenge accepted!!
Then, the party of heroes are attacked by a giant leech monster, oh no! They try to follow Callum's plan, but instead just kinda fall all over themselves and each other. This is what I imagine playing Monster Hunter with randoms is like.
Rayla confides in Ezran that she feels like a failure, what with her hesitations and morals getting in the way and making her the worst assassin ever. Meanwhile, Callum talks to Ellis. He's not confident in his own abilities, he just has a cool primal rock
that he stole from another mage.
Callum: Without this primal stone, I'm just a guy who can draw like a master artist. :<
After the pep talk, they actually succeed with their plan and take down the totally fake illusion leech together! Yay! (Rayla's third kill: Giant leech monster illusion)
Viren brings the mirror into the cell and demands to know what the mysterious relic is! Runaan appears to recognize it, and congratulates him on finding something worse than death. His resolve is completely betrayed by the expression of fear on his face when he sees that mirror. XD
(I wonder if he's afraid of the mirror, or what lurks inside? Does he know what's inside? Or does he just recognize it as a magic prison?
Or maybe he's just appalled at his own reflection "Ugh, my hair is a mess, I'm grimy, and my left horn is broken! This is a fate worse than death!")
Of course, he looks even more terrified when he's in that coin. I wonder how much a Runaan coin is worth? How insulting it would be if he were trapped in a low value currency.
Then again, I guess there's more than one way to
spend a soul coin. o_o;;
Gren has the most terrifying view of this scene. Viren did a real good amount of damage to himself with that spell and emerges from that hallway lookin' mighty metal. It's gonna take a few extra butterflies to cover that up.
Ezran: The miracle never happen.
Wonderstorm"Tuuurn baaack! Before it gets you, too!" The spiderweb mummy illusion has Lujanne's voice. I did not catch that, originally. XD
Ezran's connection to animals is revealed!
There's a lot of theming in TDP about "connection", and one of the biggest plot points is how
everything in the world is connected to primal energies... uhh, except humans just 'cause! My my what a strange imbalance!
I'm imagining a reveal that humans once had a primal connection of their own, but it went dormant at some point in history. Could Ez's special connection to animals be related to a long lost primal magic?
(If dark magic really is a corrupted form of a long lost primal, then maybe Ezran is unknowingly displaying a low level example of what that real 7th primal magic can do?
I can't wait for the new season to completely joss all of my theories. XD)
Phoe Phoe is so awesome. Where's TDP merch? I need a plushie.
"She never needed that fourth leg to be happy; everyone else did." is a statement that suckerpunches me right in the feels. It did when I first watched, and it did upon the rewatch. XD
TDP has my favourite type of illusion magic - the type that forgoes distraction and sleight of hand trickery and meets us at our core perception of the world. Alter the very senses, and your illusions feel, smell, taste, sound and look just as real as anything in reality.
Anyway, so the egg dies.
It is dead. The light extinguishes completely as they're talking about how they all messed up.
But then Callum smashes the primal stone and unleashes the storm! After Rayla stops it from rolling off the cliff, the egg is quickly connected to the storm's energy by a normal lightning strike, and then... rainbow magic everywhere! The egg is lifted into the air as rainbow electricity pours in and lights up the mountain like a disco.
This rainbow magic totally revives the egg. The glow returns, and cracks appear! Then it falls back down and sizzles for a moment before Zym hatches out.
We get to see this rainbow magic at the end of season 3, too, if I recall correctly. Zym uses to revive his dying/despondant mother. Also, I've noticed that sometimes dark magic takes on a rainbow hue before turning dark and purple. (Example in this very episode when Claudia uses the tracking spell on Rayla)
Prince Zym cancels the assassination contract on Ezran. Yay!
I already mentioned this in the chat during the watch, but I wonder if that broke only Rayla's binding, or that contract/binding in general? Runaan isn't exactly in a position to care about the binding right now, but if he can ever get out of that coin, I wonder if he'll exit it minus an arm. X'D
Baby Phoe Phoe credits illustration wins. The group "helping" Soren with his push-ups comes a close second. XD
