A recent Facebook post revealed release dates for two upcoming Neopets-based mobile apps as previously unveiled at Comic Con 2018. I decided to create a thread dedicated to discussing the two apps. The first, as some of you may have heard, is called Legends & Letters, launching on January 17th. The second is the app for the Neopets website itself, coming in Summer 2019. This is reassuring for the future of Neopets. As much as we had previously worried about the future of Neopets (I remember getting worried back in mid-2015 after reading the thread about the staff layoffs), seeing that progress is still ongoing like this, and towards a market relevant to the current direction of the industry, shows that their attempts at innovation and maintenance are still ongoing. |

A quick update on the release of Legends and Letters. The initial release date of January 17 is still on for the app, but will only be released in certain countries (the US will probably be one receiving it on the 17). The global launch date is now scheduled for sometime in late February.

*reads the boards on the new Legends and Letters board* JS, please make Hanso and Brynn characters you can have in your party for Legends and Letters (and if you do, please don't make it impossible for me to attain them both), and make Brynn a legendary character. It just makes sense. xD (Obviously I'd want Hanso to be one as well - and I'm sure he'd love to think of himself as a legendary thief, lol - but if it can't be both, go with Brynn at least. :3)

But anyway... Seeing the issues that have come up so far and how the people who got access first are essentially beta testers, I guess I'm okay with not getting to play yet? With all the feedback they're giving so far, I expect there to be many updates and improvements to the gameplay. Then hopefully by the time it arrives in the US (and elsewhere), it'll be much more polished. :3 Hopefully we all won't have to wait too long to play! (Might these initial players have to restart the game upon the official worldwide release though? Since clearly there are features that aren't available yet - e.g. account syncing and thus, prizes - so they wouldn't get the "proper" experience and plus, they'd be much further ahead than everyone else.) I didn't realize how eager I was for this game though.  Hopefully it's worth the wait! Edit:

I'm having a hard time finding much information about the gameplay so far. It looks like there isn't much incentive for people to play (or pay) right now without it having any on-site rewards. The addition of having customized avatars with repurposed NC Mall clothes is strange, too. It feels like this game was initially developed as a 100% standalone Neopets experience. Some quick tidbits about the app so far that I thought were interesting: - Back during the Con we noticed the app was using old Tales of Neopia artwork. Now we know the internal name for this app is also Tales of Neopia. Besides that, it has zero in common with the cancelled project. - JN's Book of Ages was plagiarized verbatim for some of the character lore tabs without permission. The ones that were written by JS are full of mistakes. Take any "revelations" from this app with a grain of salt. And some slight game spoilers, I guess?:
- The app page boasts a misleading 120 levels, but there are actually only 40 levels between two worlds with three difficulty settings. 40x3 = 120. There is a third world that is currently inaccessible. (Thanks Herdy)
- According to the 'boards, the paywall starts at level 17. Enemies are given way more HP compared to the levels that came before it.

It isn't so much as a paywall as a sudden increase in difficulty. Levels 1-16 can be beaten fairly easily first time though using your starting characters provided you've levelled with the cards you are automatically given as prizes.
17 is beatable, but you have to grind the lower levels a bit to level up your party first. I've yet to do that, but people who have say that the following levels aren't as difficult. |

They've changed the Legends and Letters board icon to one of Lyra with a new appearance (different hair/clothes + new accessories). I guess this means she will also be appearing in the game too (I previously thought it would be just Aurrick, as I haven't yet seen mention of her anywhere - except, I suppose, in the silhouette promo image for L&L, assuming that was her), so I wonder if The Lost Heirloom is going to show that transformation before it concludes?
...At the pace it's going, they've got a while to go before that could reasonably happen...unless she randomly decides on a wardrobe change for no reason.
But anyway. It kinda feels like a spoiler*. D: I'm surprised they didn't choose Aurrick instead since he's kinda the face of the game currently??
Also, I liked her old hairstyle better, lol. Edit (1.30.19): Hey, is that the Faerielands Destruction Background behind her?
*Though I mean, Aurrick's presence in the game and the prize shop preview already act as spoilers, so I guess that's not too big an issue for them? *shrugs* It makes you wonder how they get from Point A to Point B though.

Lyra's in one of the sample images in the app store description so she's definitely appearing. The crux of the story is that Aurrick needs to get to the Lost Desert from Krawk Island in order to find a gemstone, and then take that gemstone to Altador.
She's not in the two chapters they have up so far, but the LD chapter is 'coming soon' (I'd guess they might hold it back for an update with the global release, maybe). I would suggest that Lyra will appear in either the LD or AL chapters (probably LD). |

Yay, I can finally play this!  ...I'm not sure which Neopet to choose though... Screenies and comments: (Oops, the screenshots are kind of really large...) Lyra looks quite good here.    Wait, whyyy?? So this was just a tease [for now]? I was hoping to grab a screenie myself...Ugh, I *knew* I should have just asked for a screenshot from the person I first saw mention her appearance...or from the person on reddit who was willing to answer questions about the app and who took screenies. T-T Curse my hesitation! OTZ ...I hope she comes back for the Faerieland or Haunted Woods levels...? And I hope those levels come soon? I want to see that lovely art asset in-game for myself. :3 But thank you, JN, for a picture and confirmation she was there. Aurrick's comments are amusing. x) Xandra only appeared in the higher difficulty version of one of the levels. Originally, the higher difficulties contained what I guess you can class as alternate universe takes on formations. Characters that would not logically appear on Krawk Island were there. Xandra was one of them. They only appeared as enemy units. They were never part of the story. The v1.2 update standardised the enemy units across the difficulties.
The fact they've gone to the trouble of including her implies that she will appear at some point though. I imagine there will be an FL stage in the future. |

I downloaded it, because I have a long history of no access to shiny tie-in stuff and now I'll bask in the glories of actual availability whenever I can.
*spent a while poking around the game, man they really do have a lot of features and a comic-format story*
only I um.
have never played Scrabble in my life. And it's turning out to be a problem because it's not at all intuitive and I've basically needed to guess what I can and can't do with my tiles. Can't spell backwards? Can't utilize letters in the middle of existing words? Can I go diagonal? aaaa don't make me download an actual Scrabble instruction sheet, that's not how you set up a standalone mobile game.
I have a strange nostalgic appreciation for a battle game where everyone politely stands around waiting for various powerup moves to finish, though xD And I do have to say, that loading screen Neopia is gorgeous and I kinda wish we had that as the Explore page instead.

Had a rough start with this app, but I think it works now. The first launch allowed me to proceed with the tutorial, then I got a black screen. Closed out, tried again, got the progress bar all the way and then another black screen. The third time was the charm because I was able to get into the game and play it. I'm playing the iOS version of the app currently.
I was confused by the login option but it doesn't seem like that links to an actual Neopets account yet. It appears to be some separate account. Hopefully, they introduce the ability to connect to an actual Neopets account soon.
The app is very responsive compared to Ghoul Catchers and I haven't found glitches when actually in battle. But my biggest gripe...will someone get Queen Fyora some footwear?

The Verge published an article about Legends & Letters yesterday indicating that it will never reward Neopoints. As of now, it seems the only prize they are planning to give when you sync your account is a free background. Article excerpt:
