Oh hey, Khamet's journal got a new entry. Dear Sabef,
Hello, this is Khamet's friend writing! I am called Tally and I am a drow, an elf from underground. I am 145 years old. This is my first time writing to someone through a journal. Khamet has said you are very great so it is an honour to write to you. Thank you for being good to him. I hope it is enjoyable for you to receive writings through the journal. If Khamet writes about our group's travels, let's make sure to visit nice places for him to tell you about!
I was only planning to visit Lustross for business but they have very nice rocks here, and very big rocks - mountains. I recognise a lot of the pretty rocks because I saw them when I used to live underground, it's interesting to see them out of the ground. I like seeing things above ground, I can't see very well in the light but there are so many colours, especially in the sky, it never looks the same, and the things that fall from it are usually nice.
The food here in Lustross is also more like what I had underground, with good strong tastes. The people are nice, I performed for them, it is a thing that I do with my martial arts practice that allows me to move water and fire and air and earth and I can make it look pretty with music. I like music with a lot of drums. I miss my bae though, she is someone I have known very long who is very important to me and I trust her a lot, and we have put our life paths together. She is also a drow who lives above ground, she is taller than me and very elegant, she has rounded ear tips and a really cute laugh, she is very good at thinking and sewing and inventing things. One time Khamet made us an umbrella with leaves and I left it with my bae so she would take good care of it while I travel.
I am going to train now, I train every day to stay strong and flexible and remember my moves and let go of my stagnations. All the others are still asleep and they sleep when it is dark and I can see well, so I have time to do things alone when they sleep. Do you need to sleep? Maybe I need to close the journal so that you can get some sleep. I will leave the journal on a nice cushion. I hope my writing is easy to read I tried to write slowly. It is very comforting to know that friends can still care about each other and stay in touch even when they are not both alive.

Session 57: Names Learned! Melanclily (she/her): an eladrin with a stronger than usual connection to the magic of the feywilds, whom the party are currently trying to track down. Tayin (they/them): dark elven timekeeper, whom the party are currently aiding on an assignment in Valdrona. Xendras (he/him): blue dragonborn leader of the Extratemporal Bureau. Vederax (he/him): black-scaled half-dragon member of the Bureau, apparently Xendras' son.

Session 57 Recap: The Temporal Fortress Key Points:*The party farewell Crystal.
*The party are transported to the Temporal Fortress, and almost killed by its security system.
*Amani loses their mental connection to Night's Peace, and has a strong emotional reaction to this.
*The party meet Xendras, the leader of the Extratemporal Bureau; and agree to complete a quest for him in exchange for the Sunfire Blade.
*Meallan does some research at the fortress.
*Amani is given hypericum by a timekeeper called Tayin.
*Tayin and the party head to Valdrona in pursuit of Steve's daughter, and a powerful eladrin. Recap Proper:Late morning on the 21st of Stone, the party are summoned by Princess Runaka. Their etherlium has arrived. She also informs them that Crystal will be leaving that afternoon with some of her representatives, to view and take ownership of his new cave. With Tally making a quick stop to buy him some little shiny rocks as a farewell gift, the party say goodbye to their troll friend, who thanks them for saving him.
They then meet with Tenacity at the inn. She admits that she didn’t ask her superiors for permission to bring the party to the Temporal Fortress, because said superiors scare her and she never worked up the courage. But she’s confident that if she just turns up with the party, it’ll be fine! The worst the Bureau can do is kick them out. Leaving Hatar and Shenanigoat behind, the party pile into the room Tenacity booked out and stand in a circle. Tenacity powers up her timekeeper, and the party soon find themselves on a dark, lonely shore facing a ring of five spinning orbs- beyond which a dark and silent fortress looms.
Immediately Amani realises they have lost their mental connection to Night’s Peace, and a lot of the related calm. Unfortunately for them, other things are happening around them.
Tenacity steps forward, holding up her bureau ID. While the gate recognises her, the orbs start to glow and cease spinning, and she realises they are about to fire on the party. Quickly she dashes forward and traces a rune across the green orb, shutting it down. But the red, yellow, purple and blue orbs still remain. Tenacity mimics the rune in the air and yells at the party to use it to shut down the orbs- but only Anthony, Amani, Meallan, Pippi and Asariel have the necessary arcane understanding to be able to recreate it from this quick glance.
The ground starts roiling like a storm-tossed sea, rising up and grabbing at the party. Anthony is unable to move, although the rest of the party avoid the clinging tendrils. Waves of magic wash over the party from the remaining orbs, as Tenacity shouts at her timekeeper, begging someone to shut off this rather aggressive defense system. Although clearly distressed, Amani receives some encouragement from Khamet and runs to deactivate one of the orbs.
Meallan, Anthony and Pippi are knocked unconscious, and Amani would be too if not for their sorcerous powers and for Meallan having written their name in his Book of Shadows. Seeing Meallan is closest to the orbs, Khamet revives him. The firbolg, Asariel (with Tally shielding them best he can) and Amani manage to shut off the remaining three orbs. Khamet takes a moment to heal the party as they process what just happened.
Moments later, three unimpressed figures appear near the now powered-down orbs: a glowing golden elf in a beautiful dark dress, an anthropomorphic hippo in jogging gear, and a pale colorless figure in overalls. The hippo-person reprimands Tenacity while the others order the party to follow them into the fortress.
The fortress itself looks to be made entirely of stone. The rooms and corridors are full of strange people and stranger devices, with purple light playing across the walls. The party are led into a bare room, at the heart of which stands a tall blue dragonborn, accompanied by what looks to be a black dragonborn with a tail. The black dragonborn is wielding a warhammer, but the blue is unarmed. He has a brief, intense exchange with Tenacity, before sending her away with the party’s escorts and challenging the party to explain why they are here.
Khamet explains the situation with Koach and the God-Forger, and emphasises that the Sunfire Blade would be helpful in bringing her down. The party can hand both the God-Forger and Sunfire Blade over to the Bureau afterward. While the acquisition of the God-Forger is highly desirable, the blue dragonborn- who introduces himself as Xendras- is not confident the party can deal with this archfiend, given they were almost killed by the fortress gate. He suggests the party do something for him first, to prove their capabilities.
During a brief exchange with Anthony it is revealed that the black dragonborn, Vederax, is in fact a half-dragon. He and Anthony bond over their shared Draconic natures.
The party ask Xendras what it is he wants them to do. He mentions that Steve the time sorcerer has a daughter, whom the Bureau only very recently discovered. She has fallen in with an eladrin called Melanclily, an eladrin with a stronger connection to the feywilds’ magics than most, and who has been on the Bureau’s radar for some time. Melanclily spirited Steve’s daughter away into the feywilds. However the Bureau have learned that for a short space of time- about a week- the duo will be on the material plane, in Valdrona. Xendras wants them captured and brought back to the fortress. They will be locked up if they are deemed a threat, or offered positions with the Extratemporal Bureau if that seems beneficial. It could go either way.
The party accept the task, and Xendras mentions that he will be sending one of his agents with the party. But first, he asks Vederax to take them somewhere to rest. Vederax, whom it is revealed is Xendras’ son, leads the party down a series of nearly identical corridors and into a fairly plain room. A doorway leads into a second identical room, each featuring two beds. Meallan asks Vederax if there is a library he can have access to. Vederax says that he will ask Xendras' permission, and then closes the door behind him and leaves the party to their rest.
It has been clear since the party arrived that something is wrong with Amani, and now that they are away from strangers they finally speak up. Night’s Peace, they explain, gives them a sense of worth and helps them stop feeling emotions so strongly. Although the party assure them it is sometimes good to feel, Amani insists that it is too much in their case, and that they are unlikable without their Peace. Meallan says that Amani feels more real now, with the archfey's influence dulled. As the silver leaks from Amani's eyes, it is replaced with a brownish hazel. Meallan and others agree that Amani seems less uncanny now. Their natural eyes are nice. Even Wisp engages in this group discussion, relating best he can to Amani’s depression from his own experience with anxiety. He knows what it's like to be overwhelmed by feelings you know aren't necessarily rational. Meanwhile Khamet has vanished in search of somebody who seems smart. Inspired by Isra’s earlier talk of medication for mood problems, he is hoping someone in the fortress can find some medicine for Amani. As he is gazing into one of the many stone rooms, a shadow falls across him. When he glances back, a purple-haired drow in a leather jacket is standing in front of him. Khamet mentions that he is looking for some medicine for a friend, who seems depressed. The drow, Tayin, says they will go and find something that is suitable for people of the party’s timeline, as long as Khamet returns to his room.
There is an awkward moment where Tayin waits for Khamet to go inside, but he lingers in the hall. Khamet explains that he has a lot of questions about the Bureau, and he was hoping its employees could answer. Tayin says that they need to meet with the party later anyway, as it was them Xendras referred to when he said he would send an agent with the party. Tayin promises they will explain as much as they can then, as long as Khamet goes back inside now. He does, and they leave to hunt down the medicine.
When Khamet enters, Asariel and Meallan are seated either side of Amani, each with an arm around the young half-elf. Aytal is snuggled in Amani’s lap, and Amani's glass orb that projects images of the constellations is lit up, turning the room into a glorious night sky. Amani is still clearly upset, but starting to feel somewhat better, surrounded by all these people who clearly care about them.
Tayin arrives with a tincture for Amani. They tell Amani that this is two weeks' worth, and that they can quite easily buy more hypericum-based medicines back home if it helps them. Tayin then leaves the party to their rest, saying they will return for them when it is time to leave for Valdrona.
Tally has gathered his thoughts, and has some extra words for Amani. He points out that although it might feel awful being distanced from Night’s Peace like this, now Amani has experience with the feeling so that if it happens again, they can look back to this time and from the experience have a better idea of what to expect and how to proceed. He also mentions that when he was Amani’s age, he was a pretty violent and unlikeable person. They are so much better than he was, so just think of where they might go from here!
Vederax soon returns to guide Meallan to the library. He gives Meallan something that looks like a broad ring made of cheap metal, and says that he will need it to access said ‘library’ (and that he must return it to Vederax when he is done.) They enter a stone room with images and sheets of text projected onto the walls and hanging in the air, while people mill around conjuring and examining them. Vederax helps Meallan bring up information on the fiends known as evils, and steps back while he goes through it. As he promised Amani, Meallan also looks for information on Vystris, but doesn’t turn up anything new. After a fair while mucking around with this exciting new method of information gathering, Meallan returns to the party.
He walks in right as Khamet is insisting on Meallan being pretty much The Worst (in the wake of him sharing the Mankarah story where the party fight a sea monster), while Pippi and Amani defend the firbolg.
Meallan immediately walks back out. Amani points out that Khamet is being a bully and that Meallan is getting better, while Pippi emphasises that Meallan can’t change mistakes made in the past. Khamet insists that Meallan is a jerk and should be treated as such- and that he wouldn’t have made any progress at all without Khamet pressuring him. Clearly annoyed by this conversation, Pippi tells the party that they need to get some sleep before they go chasing after time-travelers the following day. She then takes off after Meallan. Pippi finds him down the hall, and convinces him to come back to the party and get some rest. It’s been a long day, after all. After reiterating that the party need to sleep, Pippi paces the room for a while keeping watch, before moving to a chair in the corner to trance.
Those still asleep are awoken some hours later by Tayin first knocking at their door, and then slamming it open against the wall. The timekeeper waits impatiently for the party to get organised. As they wait, Tally asks them in roundabout fashion what they are doing working for the Bureau. Tayin explains that where they come from, the drow- or ‘dark elves’, as they prefer to be called- pulled away from the Shadow Queen long ago. They now soar through astral space in crafts fitted with panels which catch and redirect the light, so that from the outside they glow like the sun. Seeing Tally’s confusion, Tayin does their best to explain the astral sea and these craft by comparison with the ocean and sailing ships.
Khamet also has some questions for Tayin, but more about the different species in the fortress than about the elf themself. He learns about the pale shape-shifting changelings, the fluid eladrin, and the halfling-sized six-armed furry creatures called skitters!
When the party are ready, Tayin leads them through a series of nearly identical stone corridors. They finally arrive at a room with a large purple portal in the far wall, which is surrounded by runes. After offering them all tablets to help with the nausea many feel when suddenly plunged back into the timestream, Tayin steps through the portal and the party follow.
They emerge into a lush green field near a gently rustling forest, a city just visible in the distance. Tayin checks their timekeeper, and realises they have arrived a day later than intended. This means that their targets will already be in the city. The group begin the trek across this field, headed for the road and ultimately for the distant city of Harrowing.

Mail to Eaine: My dearest, Again I write you from a lull between perils and tribulations. I now trust that it is safe to do so. My back still twinges with chagrin at the thought of you stranded without even the barest of necessities, with no option but to rely on the pious generosity of others. I am terribly sorry that we were parted so abruptly in Cai Shaan. Please, convey my apologies to our two travelling companions. I hope all of you have settled comfortably and recovered from this unpleasant episode. And I wish you the best with our new neighbour and hope to welcome them myself when I return. As I told you hastily in the note that I sent with your luggage, the trouble in Cai Shaan has been cleared now. We had to delve down disagreeable tunnels, unsanitary galleries with no sign of maintenance, full of weird beasts and made of strange surface-adjacent rocks. The evidence we found of the cult's wrongdoings, and the lasting harm done to their victims, made it clear to me that they had to be stopped, but it took some brutal cleaning-up. I have salvaged a book that recorded the cult's ideas, and if you wish, I will bring it for you to study. I cannot think of a way to make this seem any less tragic. The source of the trouble was one of our kind, risen but not welcomed or adapted, whose faith was exploited not by our former pain-in-the-brain, but by a local fiend posing as her. I failed to save him. Fiends, fey, deities, celestials, weird costumed travellers popping up with cryptic instructions, we cannot go anywhere without being plagued by otherworldly beings. Before leaving for Lustross we had to stop a swarm of sprites from destroying a tavern with their carousing. Just among my travelling companions, I count the influence of three fiends, two fey - one imprisoned but still capable - and one deity. What happened to staying on our own planes and minding our own business? Why are there even separate planes if none can keep to themselves? Or is it only ours that acts as a sieve? Grandmaster Luhine's teachings never involved traps or bargains and I only feel more gratitude for them. Relatedly, has anyone made any jam recently, in spite of the season? I may be biased on this, but I am confident that our neighbours can make better jam than this celestial being who settled in Lustross. Actually, it is a matter of honour. My jewel, please let them know of my faith in their jam. After we cleared the tunnels, everything moved so fast. You might be pleased to know that Cai Lyrelle has granted me permanent access to the city. We were summoned left and right to deal with all manner of strange creatures. It is like we uncover two new intrusive creatures with every problem we resolve. I am afraid that I allowed the Everqueen to touch me in a helpful way. It feels less dirty when I remember that my body's fluidity was already her doing, anyway. What we are currently preparing to fend off a worse evil which, I am ashamed to say, took us entirely off-guard while we were dealing with the cult under Cai Shaan. The party took several days to investigate magic and stuff and plan strategies. All of this is far beyond my abilities and my understanding. I cannot even track the creatures to learn more about them, as they vanish and reappear at leisure instead of travelling the land and hiding in ordinary nooks and crannies like good old earthly villains. For any hope of neutralising this threat we need a magical component, and to acquire this component we needed to fulfill a task for the local authorities, and to fulfill this task we needed to investigate yet more otherworldly creatures and bargain with them, and aside from the magical component we seek another item which we will have to obtain from more otherworldly powers, possibly by fulfilling another task for them in return, which, I do not doubt, will involve bargaining with still more weirdos. It never seems to end. I have rarely taken such a lesson in powerlessness. Not only did I barely survive the tunnels, almost perishing at the hands of the cult leader and even at the appendages of tunnel varmint. On the ship, we were also attacked by wyverns, and all I could do was be carried off like an entree on a platter. Shortly into Lustross, we were attacked by yet another posse of fiends, and I immediately got skewered, at least drawing some attacks away from my more useful companions. That is all I amount to: a helpless piece of meat. Those we meet on our way treat me as though I were one of the adventurers, and if they can tell that I am entirely out of my depth, they do not let it show. At this point, I am only tagging along to carry luggage and to make sure everyone is well-fed and our accommodations remain tidy. That, at least, is something I enjoy. In the heat of the action, the party ended up killing one of those latest fiends, one who was acting like a youthful recruit but fed on the corruption of souls, which led to more debating and regrets from the party and, I think, an inch of progress. My mind keeps going back to the claws and the great wingbeats lifting me through the mist and over the waves. It makes me go limp while I meditate. I have been on the brink of death many times recently - although surrounded by people with a wide range of healing abilities, rest assured. We have also run into an angelic being's offer of resurrecting a person of our choice. In between all those beings' influences, and the party's concerns over soul corruption, it all seems pointless to me. I think you can understand, my pearl, why I have never felt like my soul was my own. It has only ever been on loan. This is only clearer now that I realise just how many entities are waiting like scavengers, ready to squabble over our scraps the moment we pass, whether to claim us in death or bring us back through resurrection. This insignificance has not been an impediment to my martial cultivation. Being so uprooted and tossed by the elements like a piece of nothing has somehow allowed me to strengthen my connection to water and air. Perhaps this will change the way I move through them, with a little more practice. To reassure you, we are not running only into monsters. We are gradually gathering allies, even from unlikely sources. Meallan has formed a truce with his vengeful undead stalker firbolg. Through this journey we are under the protection of the abjurer Pippi, a delightful sea elf with a strong sense of responsibility that reminds me of our community; of the experienced archmage Asariel, Amani's ren who has been very helpful with their enchantment magic situation; and for a while, of a sweet wolf-like elf, a bloodhunter named Moon, who joined the first part of our travels through Lustross and defended us like her own pack. Lustross seems a peaceful place so far, where people of all sorts seem to be accepted. I have been carefully taking my supplements and my health only took a dip on the first day of our stay. Aside from the main event, the ship itself was not so bad - Khamet made sure that I was comfortable. A lot of the food tasted familiar and nostalgic to me. There are so many shops selling various stones, polished and prettily displayed and so far out of the ground. There is no known Underdark there, and the looks I receive are only those given to foreigners in general. In our quest for a magical component, we have made a favourable impression on the crown princess, Runaka - good enough to earn her hospitality and spend a few days in a suite in the palace. It is vast, clean and well-tended, and we were able to throw a little party for Amani. Here we were able to find a safe home for the gentle troll Crystal Collector, who sailed with us all the way from Cai Shaan after escaping the tunnels with us. That is at least one victim of the cult who ended up in a good place, and I hope he will have a quaint and peaceful life in this rocky place. I have recently learned that Khamet's precious journal allows him to communicate with a friend who has passed on. Having the living still care enough about one to send on thoughts and stories, that does not seem so bad. We are about to set off for another thing. From what I understand, this trip will have strange consequences on the time of our return. I hope it only delays us by one week, and to head back for Cai Shaan shortly after. Take care of yourselves and each other. Your voice echoes ever in the chambers of my heart. For you, I am still Tally

Session 58 Recap: A Harrowing Adventure Key Points:*The party learn they are now 83 years in the future!!!
*The party split up to follow an unknown tiefling, as well as their original targets Melanclily and Tam.
*Meallan retrieves the Staff of Frost.
*The party meet Bill, former warlock to an archfey called Mountain's Heart. Recap Proper:As the party make their way towards Harrowing, Night’s Peace speaks telepathically with Amani. She seems emotional, and reveals that she thought Amani was dead- it has been 83 years since the party left the timeline. When he learns this Tally seizes Tayin. The timekeeper protests and struggles, but Tally refuses to let go. Tally wants to return home, but Tayin reminds him that the party are only here because they want something from the Bureau. The party ultimately decide to continue with their current quest, so that they can acquire the Sunfire Blade to wield against Malka.
The party reach the city, and get their first real sight of the lightning trains, which rocket between tall metal and glass towers overhead. They secure rooms at an inn and head out to find Melanclily and time-sorcerer-the-younger. Splitting up, the party discover the duo are likely making for an orchard outside of town. While most of the party get on the train to journey there, Meallan and Anthony join Pippi and Asariel in hunting for an unknown tiefling who was seen receiving a strange staff from Melanclily, and whom Meallan (with the aid of a scrying spell) saw pass the nearby East Central station.
They soon find her meeting with three tiefling men, although one of these men sees the group and raises the alarm. The woman with the staff and one of her companions begin to run, while the other two try to hold back the adventurers, to no avail. Asariel conjures an illusory dragon from the shadows, and in her desperation to stay away from it the tiefling is driven closer to Meallan, and scrambles up a nearby wall. Meallan drags her to the ground while her companions flee, spurred on by a fear spell from Anthony.
Meallan claims the woman’s staff, and learns that Melanclily gave it as thanks for putting her in contact with a local orchard keeper, who was a warlock in service to an archfey until he completed his contract. Anthony and Meallan board a train and head for the orchard.
Meanwhile, the rest of the party had arrived and pretended they were looking to try local marmalade. The orchard keeper, Bill, was friendly at first and gave them all small prettily presented jam-jars. However, he becomes increasingly suspicious at their line of questioning. As Khamet climbs out the bathroom window to pursue people he heard leave through the front door, and Tally and Basil head outside with Tayin with the excuse that the latter is becoming overwhelmed and needs air, Amani manages to keep distracting Bill with loud conversation.
Once outside, Khamet sees Melanclily fleeing into the orchard, pulling the young human sorcerer after her. Tayin engages the time lock, cutting the sorcerer off from her power, while Khamet prevents both targets from fighting back with a well-timed hold person. Bill’s wife, Debbie, soon alerts him to what is happening, and he joins the fight even as Amani tries to talk him down. The party quickly deal with him, and Tayin puts their dimensional shackles on Melanclily in preparation for transportation to the Temporal Fortress. Tayin waits for Meallan and Anthony to return with their own news, which confirms that the tiefling woman they chased down didn’t know about the time travel. Tayin requests that the staff Meallan took from her be handed over, so that the Bureau can examine it. Once they have the staff, they prepare to return the party and prisoners to the fortress.
However, some members of the party still have goals to accomplish in Harrowing. Tayin, Basil, and Anthony return to the fortress with the prisoners while Meallan, Amani, Khamet, Asariel and Pippi remain behind in Harrowing. Tayin promises to return to retrieve those in Harrowing personally. They give these adventurers an unfamiliar coin as a token gesture of sincerity, and then they are gone, leaving half the party and their wizard companions to spend the night in Harrowing.
