Wishing she weren't so tired, Arin pushed the errant strands of hair away from her face. Nonine's weave had loosened throughout the day and especially with the konjepar ride, so now strings of hair framed Arin's face and tumbled loose from the knot on the back of her head. She looked back to Bykendi. "... Do you need me to translate for him?" she asked quietly, still unsure of what kind of a mood he was in and if he would antagonize Jasna again. "Where is he?"

I like making sure it doesn't seem like everyone in this story constantly has perfect hair, especially since they're essentially camped out in the wilderness most of the time.

Soon it seemed as though all of Brightvale was against them – memberships were canceled, ridiculous spin-off stories were published in less-reputable papers, they were yelled at and called names in the street, and even King Hagan no longer wanted anything to do with them.

“Yes, I do. One of them is to ruin your reputation by sending those embarrassing details to the entirety of the Defenders' personnel if you don't stop attempting to subtly snark me,” Loraine told her.

“I am shutting up now.”

Panic filled her. What if she died because this supposedly marvelous, prophecy-fulfilling power didn’t turn on when she needed it?

“Fine, let’s get to the caves,” Hizal growled. He tugged her arm and then they were off again, as the sounds of chaos mounted around them. The acrid smell of smoke had begun to fill the air.

“Elder!” One of the guards ran ahead and motioned to them to join him on a balcony. “To the ground, now!”

“Right!” Hizal charged forward, and Angela was barely able to keep her feet from flying out beneath her.

Of course superpowers never work when you need them to.

“I’ve already made so many friends,” she bleats. “And I know you would, too, if you just put yourself out there.”

“I’ve made friends,” I counter.

“Who?”

“Tamika.”

Tamika is our RA. Technically this stands for residential assistant, but during move-in she told us we really ought to think of her as our residential ally. She’s the one who decorated all our doors with brightly colored cardboard paper nametags, and whenever I see her in the hall she smiles at me and asks how I’m doing.

Lysa snorts. “Someone beyond Tamika.”

I can't recall ever having this much fun with a narrator's voice before. XD She's very fun to write.

Jaxon hunched his shoulders. "But he's so... he's such a tyrant!" he seethed, careful to keep his voice down. "He's like a child, throwing a tantrum until he gets what he wants!"

Harran sighed. "I know. That is why we must remove ourselves. Jasna knows how to handle him. If we try, we will only get ourselves and others hurt." She put her hands on Jaxon's shoulders. "Shed your mind of his influence. Do not try to see things the way he does. It is insanity. He has his own demons he must overcome and you have no business taking them on yourself."

Jaxon looked up at her for a moment and then nodded. He patted her arm and she released him, and they continued toward the human rooms. "You know... for someone who didn't say a word when we first met, you say some really profound stuff. Thank you."

She smiled. "And thank you, for listening."
