Jaxon's eyes were wide with realization, as it made sense now considering the twins' psychic connection, and he pointed to Bykendi, sure that she could see where he was going with this.

In which people realize important things but there is a language barrier preventing them from openly discussing it.

The great cruiser herself brooded over the desert floor with a massive presence. She lacked the armament that she had sported during the attack on Bykendi's camp, but that did not lessen her immensity any.

Suddenly a spotlight turned on near her bow, aiming a thick shaft of white light down at the rock. It swept the area slowly, dwarfing the torchlight as it searched for something like a great eye.

You know, I really hope I'm not the only person who gets this excited about writing about airships.

I like how I haven't even determined the mode of propulsion for these craft and I don't actually care. In my mind they just exist as vague cool machine thingies with future-type technology. Maybe they have internal air bladders or something, I don't know.

As the humans descended into the camp, they clammed up again. Their body language became more stiff and withdrawn, and they huddled closer to each other. Simply agreeing to an alliance would not automatically erase a fear of bidurruti for people who only knew the creatures as cruel and oppressive monsters. The soldiers watched the bidurruti warily, and a few of them put their hands on their weapons as they watched the sparring and practice, although it seemed to be more to assure the other humans of their safety than a prelude to an act of aggression.

Yep, nothing quite like entering the military camp of over a thousand creatures who are bigger than you, stronger than you, and have held your own race in slavery for two hundred years. I'd be a little nervous, too.

I dodged to the right as his foot came at my stomach once again. He missed, slipped a little on the damp rocks, and turned to face me.

"Keep movin', we're almost there!" Joza hollered. He and the other soldiers stepped forward, and everyone else fell in behind them. "Oof, I hope they really do have room for us all," he muttered. "I'm dead tired."

Joza is the kind of guy who does a lot of hollering.

Actually, in my mind he always has a Texas accent. This just makes him even more loveable.

Once thriving metropolises are now dusty and dirty. Some windows are broken, and a lot of the power lines have been knocked down, giving the landscape a black spiderwebbing. I think the city we're looking at now used to be Cheyenne, but I can't be entirely certain. Kirk confirms this.

“It was one of the hardest hit cities at the very beginning. The uninfected were allowed to escape, I think. Either that or they just nailed the whole place with mustard gas and killed everyone off pretty much instantly.” His voice sounds bitter and hurt. I know he trusted Kits and the last couple weeks haven't been easy on him. He's lately been thinking of all the ways she could have punished the country, and in the most twisted and unthinkable ways.

“I remember you and Toby telling me that mustard gas was the preferred way to get rid of massive city centers,” I say gently. I don't turn my face towards him, though, preferring to look for any signs of life at all from our giant, floating hotel.

Jaxon woke to an incredible pain in his side. It caused him to groan in agony as he realized he was crumpled against a cave wall. Everything was quiet and it took him a moment to remember what had happened. Someone had opened fire before Kennison’s signal, and then—-well, they’d been massacred.

His hand moved to his side and he felt a bullet lodged in his vest armor. Thank goodness he’d been wearing it, although he probably had a broken rib or two now. Still, that was preferable to death.

He smacked the roof of his mouth with his tongue, a foreign and acrid taste in his saliva. That had to be the chemical stimulants that had injected themselves into him to wake him up, as he had evidently blacked out when he was shot.

Wearily, he sat up to push himself to his feet. Around him, many of his fellow officers were doing the same, although a good number were still down—permanently, it seemed.

Trying to rewrite this chapter from one character's POV. Here's hoping it works.

“Your fine,” he parroted back, and then it hit him. “Your fine? Sweet gods above. He didn’t just lash you—he also gave you a fine?”

Don’t worry, she thought, but didn’t say. The fine and beating are just the start of it. He also successfully threatened me into being an undercover agent for the Watch.

More than a sentence, but they sort of lack context independently. XD
