Toyed with calling the thread 'Boyish Shenanigans', but then I'd probably start thinking of the story as that and that can only end badly. ... SO! YES! I seem to have, er. Gone around and intruded on everyone else's stories. Again. *coughs* ... If it helps, think of me as that one incompetent but well-meaning person who bounces around admiring everyone else's campfires and chattering to people and probably accidentally sets the whole place on fire. And anyway, seeing I've done that it's probably about time I made my own thread. =D So. Here it is! I have set up my story, not without occasionally putting a plot point wrong and bringing the whole mess down on my head. I have collected many logs of dialogue ready to burn for inspiration. So now it's just a matter of settling down, and seeing what the night will bring. Night is the time for campfire stories, after all. I might actually start thinking of it with an exclamation mark now. That's amusing.
Basically ...
Basically, there's a town.
A town on the edge of the world. Not our world, mind. The fairy world, or at any rate one of the fairy worlds, lost in the mist, only staying stable by dark and complex magic performed by the first fae to find it, centuries ago. There amidst tall grey stones that thrum with magic the fae dance and laugh and feast, and many a human has been lured there to dance and laugh and feast alongside them, and none have come back. Eventually, though, one managed to escape, and, with the help of a kindly fairy, founded a safe town, a sanctuary, on the very border of the land. This he ringed with bells - because, as of course you know, fairies cannot abide the sound of bells - and, over time, a whole town has gathered up there. Belltown.
Don't go thinking Belltown is interesting, by the way. It's a very dull place. Over time there has been a movement to make it as un-fae as possible, which means little colour, little life, little joy.
This is where John Dawson ends up, standing in a field and plastered with mud, dared by the other boys from his school playing sports to go look for the ball ... The ball that ended up perilously close to the wall, the wall strengthened with iron and with bells hanging every few metres, the wall that keeps the fairies at bay; beyond this, the other boys have told him, is where no sane person would go. Only fairies go there.
A boy climbs over. From the other side. John (... really weird not calling him Jackdaw, by the way. xD So I'll start off calling him that, confusion be burned) asks him if he's one of the fae, rather doubtfully; the wall is, after all, warded quite thoroughly. The boy seizes on that, pretends to be fae for a few minutes, then loses his balance and falls in the mud. Or something else hilarious happens. Jackdaw laughs. The boy stands up, swears at him, then strides off in proud indignation. Jackdaw fetches the ball. Things go on as normal.
Though not for very long.
That's just their first meeting. From there, things get quite a bit more confusing, quite fast. There's theft and running and sneaking out at midnight to visit the human graveyard that is, for some reason, in the Fairy Forest; there's magic and fishing and chaos and laughter and a kindly inventor and a statue who is also an alchemist and the Fairy Court all dancing and dazzle, there's disaster and redemption - what? No there's not. Sorry, I get carried away by these lists. Anyway, there's certainly disaster. Disaster in bucketloads. Great scary mountains of disaster.
All in all, chances are good that Jackdaw will not get much chance to do his Latin homework.
Under the circumstances, he really doesn't mind.

=D This sounds awesome. I can't think of much intelligent-sounding comments. Which. Might have to do with how tired I am. D=
... also it sort of reminds me of Stardust. The town and the wall and stuff. And bells! That is cool. =D

That exclamation mark. Is. The best. xD And this is shiny and pretty and I love how they first meet and just =D! in general. ^_^ Right? xD I actually like the title now! ^__^ =D This sounds awesome. I can't think of much intelligent-sounding comments. Which. Might have to do with how tired I am. D= ... also it sort of reminds me of Stardust. The town and the wall and stuff. And bells! That is cool. =D Well, I'm plenty pleased at it sounding awesome. xD 'ticularly considering how muddled it is in my head. (... Are you planning on doing this, by the way? Because you totally should! I mean, if you had any ideas. And perhaps in August, considering. But still. ... You are welcome to be an Honorary Camper. =D I will share marshmallows with you.) ... And. Yeah. That. *coughs* Er. That ... that wall is shamelessly stolen from Stardust, yes. Wasn't even going to be in it, but it got cemented as their first meeting very solidly, so. We have a wall! Huzzah! And possibly the town in general was, yeah. ... Oh well. Stardust doesn't have skulls! =D I totally have skulls.

It would have been awesome if this thread had been called BOYS IN TIES FINDING OUT THE IMORTANCE OF BEING THEMSELVES WHILE FIGHTING FAE WITH COOORPSES, but that's probably too long so I think Jackdaw and Julian! with a ! is a pretty satisfactory replacement. xD
Anyway. Win. So much win. And vague Stardust references make everything kind of awesome too (although, to be fair, there are probably quite a lot of stories about boring towns with walls you must not ever go over, so you shouldn't feel too guilty for writing one).
But the wall isn't why this story is awesome anyway. Your characters being odd and wonderful and bouncing off each other — that's why this story is going to be awesome. xD *glees*

Aww, but I love your comments! You're welcome to pop over to my campsite and grab a few marshmallows anytime! 8D But that's beside the point, because now I'm popping over here to admire this awesomeness. Fae, bells, and disaster. Yes please. ^^ And I can already get so much of the mood of the story just from the description--it sounds like beauty and music and repressed fear. And also I find the bit about bells and a wall to be a bit reminiscent of Sabriel (which I only read the beginning of, gah, so I barely remember), since it strikes me as very haunting. Also because I seem to have a penchant for anything involving big scary walls. I'm really excited to hear more about the characters, but I think my favourite part so far is the simple fact that you have a town surrounded by iron and bells and stoicism as a defence against the fae. As always, I'm really hoping to be able to read this one when it's finished. It sounds epic. Oh, and I also really like the names. ^^ Just putting that out there.

I wish that had occurred to me! xD So catchy, too. Bestseller title f'sure! But yeah, I felt that this conveyed the suitable amount of enthusiasm. =D I can just imagine a jaunty title page. The amusing part is that Belltown isn't even that major a part of the story. xD; Not as far as settings go. Which ... I ought to work on! Particularly seeing that ... oh gods, I'm meant to be starting tomorrow I really probably shouldn't do that Ha yep. =D Let's hope so. Aww, but I love your comments! You're welcome to pop over to my campsite and grab a few marshmallows anytime! 8D But that's beside the point, because now I'm popping over here to admire this awesomeness. Fae, bells, and disaster. Something vaguely like that coming to the site in August, actually. xD Cabins. Sounds sorta socialgroupish. But, pfft. Who can wait for August.) Oh. Um. Oops. xD; That's ... probably what I get for making my descriptions all mystical. The point of this story is (I presume! =D I don't really have the slightest idea) more about ... banter and friendship and. I don't know. Running unwisely around in forests. So, I mean, by and large it'll be my normal cheerful fare. ... That said there will certainly by creepy parts! =D Or, I mean, there very sincerely ought to be. Wasted opportunity otherwise. I mean, pretty sure these two spend quite a bit of time hanging out in a crypt (... again. Bit of a recurring theme for me? xD) with, like. Skeletons and stuff. And ... actually, yeah, I should definitely put more creepiness in this! Every story should have something of everything! ... oh, wait, yeah, that one scene with the music ... =D Yeah there are creepy parts. Definitely. Quite a small wall. But - actually I find myself wanting much more to characterise the town now. Representative characters and such. *frowns* ... Guess I'd better do that then! Really, really fast. ^_^ *beams* And there will be excerpts and such! Definitely. =D *beams* That's good. And you've only seen two of them! I'm glad they go well together, those two names.

Also. ... Er. ... Look, I have a new notebook, okay? And I get really bored at school! Okay! =D So that in the upper left is Sal Philologus Lapis, who is a statue made of white marble. Which ... doesn't really show here. ( And her hat doesn't look like that.) She's wearing a sort of brown coatish thing, a bit like Gaius's, and some necklacey stuff and big gloves - she likes to have several layers of clothes so it's less painfully obvious that she's, y'know, made of stone. The gloves she started wearing on Crane's insistence, when she was less than cautious with some acid and it etched right into her. They make her clumsier with alchemy, but, hey. And below her is Jackdaw fishing. =D I like Jackdaw fishing. His face is weird but fortunately you can't really tell that in the scan! His foot is also weird. Just ... ignore that. Focus on the happyfishingfuntimes. Presumably Julian is somewhere off-screen, blowing things up. And then above that is the wall scene! Not at all accurate, because the wall is bigger and prettier, and I couldn't be bothered drawing the ferret mask that Jackdaw is wearing at the time. ... yes, the ferret mask. Shut up. >.> He's an odd fellow, in case you hadn't gathered. And below that is the two of 'em with a skull! Yay, skulls. And above that is Julian being all 'I am completely not untrustworthy at all! =D' and slinging his arm around Jackdaw's shoulder companionably and Jackdaw being like, 'um, really no'. Please ignore his arm, it appears to have turned into some sort of rubberish substance. Beside 'em is a Crane. <3 Crane is lovely. (You can't really see, but he is wearing spectacles. =D I think they are magic! They let him see anything he wants to. Like the Beast's mirror.) And beneath that is Julian, being all 'You can tell I'm trustworthy because I have cake!' which makes me somewhat suspicious. And then there's another Crane. ... Andyep. =D Er. I think starting this tomorrow would be somewhat premature, but - psyched, all the same! Day after tomorrow. Yup.

Except, as it turns out, I wasn't very tired, and it was past midnight, and - well. *coughs sheepishly* ... In fairness! In fairness. I won't get very much chance to write tomorrow. xD; School, and then I will go and be a cheerful little curtain-drone for my old Drama class. So. ... To make up for my shameful lack of restraint, have some weirdness! =D No - hi-jinks! Hi-jinks of the craziest sort. (Not really.) “But it is we who the spinners of tales, manling!” the fairy cried. “We who first plucked the stars from the sky and from them fashioned the first fires, we who are the superior of your faltering feeble kind in every conceivable way; do you really think,” and here it flung out its arms and flung back its head for dramatic effect, “that there are any stories that we do not wish there to be?”
There was a thoughtful pause.
“Good point,” Jackdaw said.
“Thank you,” the fairy said. Then it said, “I mean, er. You are welcome, manling.” It made a magnanimous gesture. “In return for your uncommon good sense I will refrain from ripping out your lungs with my bare … fingernails and, er. Making cushions from them.”
“Cushions,” Jackdaw said flatly.
“Yeah, well,” the fairy snapped, “you can’t talk, you’re far too tall and your uniform is a mess.
And I am probably tired enough to sleep now. :3 'night, campmates.

Stardust doesn't have skulls! =D I totally have skulls. Stories always start out muddled in one's head. =D Hopefully they become unmuddled as you write them out. And I think it should be a perfectly terrible idea for me to do so, which is why yes, probably, as soon as I get a bit of time to sit down and figure out which of the ideas I've been collecting like shinies could be novel-worthy. ^_^ (and if that time never comes, I will partake of your marshmallows and be happy to sit around your campfire in the absence of mine. =D) Well. I mean, you have skulls. And 'sides, there are probably hundreds of wall-books (I mean, you know, books with walls). Because walls are really useful things. Keep stuff out, keep stuff in. Sometimes. Anyway, I digress! =D Your doodles are most adorable. And I'm fond of Julian already. <3
