My country doesn't has to deal with hurricanes nor earthquakes, but I'm praying for you guys! D: Is it too dangerous? Hide in the basement! Hide in the basement and take Toto with you! >.< Dju, you're thinking of tornadoes, not hurricanes. You don't hide in the basement when a hurricane hits, because it brings floods with it. Basement would be one of the worst places to be. Plus, if you're like me and live in a flood zone, your house doesn't even have a basement. :B I live near a swamp in VA, so we're gonna get hit fairly hard. (Not as hard as NC, though, where it's going to land) Probably 30-60 mph winds, they're predicting. So we're pretty much guaranteed to get a power-out. I'm pretty sure my house is safe from the floods at least, though. Last time we had a Nor'easter, which comes with much more water, we got flooded on both ends of the street, but our house is just slightly higher than that. Still, the whole town of Poquoson's pretty much evacuated. And everyone's running around like a crazy person. The interstate North is gridlocked with traffic, and all the stores are jammed with people like it was Christmas Eve! We've stocked up on Spaghetti-Os and bread and peanut butter, so we should be okay for a weekend or so. Still not gonna be fun though. XD Ooh, now I understand the difference! I did a little research, and I must admit I was quite relieved: Oh, don't forget to stock some rabbit food for your cute fluffy bunnies! :3

I'm just on the outside of Irene's path, we probably won't get much more than buckets of rain. I'm really worried for everyone I know further east though, especially the people in NC. D: Stay safe, you guys!

I'm in TN. We usually catch the tail end of just about every major hurricane in the southeast, so we'll probably see heavy rain and possibly winds, but most likely nothing too horrifying.
Still, the situation looks worrisome. Take care, everybody. =<

At the moment I live in Oregon, so I'm quite safe. However, I lived in Okinawa for several years, and got monsoons (as hurricanes are called if they come from the Pacific) 2 -3 times a year, so I'm quite familiar with the preparations and such. Stay inside a good, strong building, keep the windows covered, and make sure you've got plenty of food that you can eat at room temperatures, fresh water in jugs to drink, and don't go crazy and you'll be fine. More people got hurt by doing something dumb (like trying to drive away at the last minute when visibility was horrible). Maybe you meant to say typhoon there; I think a monsoon is a sudden pouring of heavy rain that buckets down on some parts of Asia at a certain time of the year. And then in Australia, hurricanes(/typhoons) tend to be called cyclones. I... don't know why we need three words for the same storm Must be a regional thing. I hope all of you who are in the path of the storm will be safe and manage to get all the right preparations done before it hits. At least it's good to see everyone's taking this very seriously and I caught a glimpse of President Obama on the evening news, making his announcement about the situation. Luckily in Melbourne, Australia, I'm too far south to get hit by dangerous tropical storms but I can sympathise with the flood problems that will follow Irene... stay safe and charge all your batteries. =)

Yeah, the words things are confusing. I believe they have different names depending on where they originate. (And on Okinawa, monsoons and typhoons tended to come hand-in-hand, with one following the other...)

Welp, it's about 3 pm here. Lots of rain, some gusts of wind, but our power's still up. Still, the worst part of the storm's not going to be here until tonight.
We're trying to eat all our fridge food today before the power goes out. :B

Right now i'm within the calm before the storm. Cloudy skies, light wind. Everything outside is just dead quiet...
I don't think it's supposed to arrive in my area for a while though.

We've been getting crazy rain lately. :/ I wonder how much the brook near the high school's gonna overflow.

*breathes a sigh of relief* Well, Irene's not going to hit us, but we're still going to feel it indirectly, thanks to the wind gusts.

It was raining earlier, but I think that wasn't Irene. I just hope it doesn't knock the power out like my mom said it would...

*yawwwwn* Nothing's happening. So far, it's only been like a bad rainstorm. And then I hear it's been downgraded for Maryland.
New York closed down their subway system today at noon, and it hasn't even passed us here in southeast VA. Overhyped much?
*grumble* I missed my Pokemon tournament for a piddly rainstorm?

Hurricane aftermath: the Bradford Pear tree in our front yard fell over. Interestingly enough, all the Bradford Pear trees in the neighborhood are the only trees that've fallen over. They're a pretty fragile species, I guess. :B
The power didn't go out in our house, nor did it flood in the nearby swamptown, but there are a few spots in the area without power. Thankfully, my grandparents who live in VA Beach are also at full power at their house. :3 All told, not too bad.

Our aftermath:
Tree fell over, flooded basement. My window cracked a bit more (should really get that fixed) for some reason.
The wind and rain were nice.
Most of the town doesn't have power, I thought mine would go out, but it didn't.
