You are Wonderful 30th of June, 2012
Hello my friends, this is a personal post, which hasn't happened here for a little while, mostly because a) I've been busy and b) I couldn't think of any specific cause. It has come to my attention that many of us here suffer from self-disparagement, self-doubt and self-negativity, so I wanted to share something with you.
Have you ever thought about the word wonderful? It means "inspiring delight, pleasure, or admiration; extremely good; marvellous." If you are wonderful, it means you inspire a sense of wonder in people.
How wonderful, then, to be a human? How perfectly imperfect to have 200,000 miles of blood vessels running through your brain alone. How beautiful to have over a billion synapses all sending and receiving impulses and chemicals. How spectacular to have these emotions that we all have; love, joy, wonder, shock, sadness, anger, faith ...
Although we might sometimes feel as though our emotions are a hindrance, that we would much rather switch them off, the thought of an emotionless human is disturbing to me, because it is our emotions that govern how we think, what we say, and why we act. It is our emotions that build a conscience and a sense of morality, duty and even community among our fellow humans.
Your emotions are more a part of who you are than your hands or any other physical attribute, and while they might cause trouble at times, we must all cultivate a healthy respect for them. You might be wondering why my short list included things like sadness and anger. It's because, at times, these can be absolutely the right reaction. We are sad when we lose the ones we love simply because we love them, and when they are hurt by someone else, we are angry for the same reason. Even our negative emotions are, in the right times, directed by our good emotions.
Now think about all the myriad of emotion soups you can make, why you make them, how they work for you and what you end up doing with them. Think about what you have done and what you are capable of doing and where you are now, and then look back at what you have done and see the progress you have made. Now let the emotions that come with that prosper in you. Emotions like satisfaction, pride, happiness, relief.
And through all of this, you must realize one thing; that you are wonderful.

That woman is a hero and an inspiration, plus the way she speaks about the subject matter is very powerful and quite sad.

The Surrender 24th of July, 2012Every year, as spring bursts forth from the barrenness of winter, the world comes alive again. All the colours, sounds and scents that had been locked away within the sleeping creatures and plants are awakened, fresh new growth begins, and it is joyful. But spring is only one in four seasons. When the pale green fluff at the tips of pine branches become dark green needles, the world settles into summer, and endures the scorching heat and the time of plenty. It must seem sad, then, when autumn comes, and when all the growing turns to dying. It must seem a great tragedy when the winds turn icy and begin to sweep the leaves from the trees. We know that they will live through the winter and spring forth again when it ends, but the bareness of the tree's limbs can't help but remind us that winter is coming, that new growth must cease. But there is a certain beauty to autumn. Not just in the sunset rainbow of the leaves, but in the very processes that lead to their falling. The trees, in their wisdom, understand that it is a temporary surrender, and one which is necessary. They could try to hold on to their leaves and their beauty, but they would soon run out of sunlight to nourish them, and the leaves would begin to die on their own. Instead, the trees accept their role in nature and the demands of each season, shedding their canopy. It is a sacrifice they must make iin order to survive, but more, it is a sacrifice which will be rewarded. Come spring, their leaves will grow again, new and full and vibrant, and the great cycle will begin again.
