"Remember that old saying? Blood runs thicker than water, and his blood is like vapours of steam to me."
- J. Sherman
In the South Island of New Zealand, 22km North-west of the ruins of a city once known as Christchurch, lies Castle Hill. Amid the rocks and boulders, scars of an angry volcano, six survivors struggle to hold on to their lives, their sanity ... and their humanity.
It has been 2 years since the United States declared war on Russia, with the Chinese superpower dragged in by their newly secured alliance with the Soviet Union. Chinese Imperial soldiers marched on the tiny Pacific nation, neutralized its government, and bombed its major cities. Now the rebels hide in the hills in the hope that one day the war would end.
In 2017.
John Sherman: The second eldest, and leader of the small band of rebels. His wife and daughter were among the casualties of the Cathedral Square massacre. Now, the 33-year-old ex-engineer hides in the wooded hills with his younger brother.
Mark Sherman: John's younger brother by 12 years. Mark was once a soldier, but deserted his post after the first bombs fell on his homeland.
Kathryn Summer: Daughter of a local politician who died doing his duty, Kat (16) struggles to find her place in this broken world.
Roata Touria: A 28 year old woman who once worked as a waitress for an upper class establishment. She acts as the mother figure for the group.
Ngaiti Touria: Roata's husband, a 31 year old doctor with an eye for details and a surprising knack for tactics and deception.
Peter Arora: Pastor of a church. In his mid-40's. He is the moral voice of the group, the source of wisdom that is often ignored.
And into their world strut two extra characters.
Rachel Reed: A clumsy 19 year old with the mind of a genius.
Luke: A blind 22 year old about which very little is known.
Luke and Rachel both realize they won't survive on their own. They need to find a group of survivors with whom they can have safety in numbers. Handy, how things like that work out, isn't it?
This'll need to be either an extended NaNo or a JanNo.
