Leoness here. I'll join :3
Comments and faves makes me happy. But comments excite me because it makes me feel good that someone actually took their time to write something. Which is why I get a little sad when I get no replies to my comments, since I always try to put some effort into them. Either I use the sandwich method, or I simply point out why I like it.
When I do fave-n-run myself, it's usually when I feel like my opinion on the piece will drown in the masses anyway, or if I am in a hurry... or if the way I feel about the piece simply cannot be put down in words or emoticons xD
I do feel bad for not commenting on all the deviations showing up in my messages. I really do want to. Why else would I be watching those artists, y'know? Sometimes it just gets so overwhealming and I honestly don't know what to put in my comment. ... but I do love watching how people's art progresses and develops! =D

I want to join! imogenweasley.deviantart.comI'm not very popular around DA, I never get many comments or faves, so whenever I get any of those, it makes me happy. ^_^ Although when I get faves from strangers, I like to check out their galleries... and it's discouraging when I look at their favorites and they've faved like a hundred other pics in the last 10 minutes. It's like "Okay, do you like my drawing, or are you just faving anything in hopes that more people will see your art?" I don't feel complimented when that happens. It's kinda disappointing instead. >_>; But... yeah, when I get genuine comments/faves, I like them equally and I try to always reply to thank people for taking the time to appreciate my art. ^^ EDIT: I forgot. XD I also try to comment every time I fave something... although I don't fave things often at all, unless I'm in a rare faving mood. ^^; I comment whenever I can, though.

Ooh, may I join? :3 My gallery is in my signature.
Comments, faves, and watches make me happy. I don't really show it as much as I should, but I really love them! X3
On comments though, my responses are too repetitive. XD I usually say "Thanks! X3", unless there's a something I need to address. There's not much I can say when all they say "cool" or "awesome". XD As for faves, I used to contact random people who come to my gallery and take the time to fave a random person's art. But lately, most of the faves I've been getting are from the same people, with the occasional random person. And for watches, I always go to their profile and thank them.

I try to reply to all my comments, but if I don’t do it right away, they tend to end up rotting for months and then I feel really bad about ignoring them. I know how much people appreciate getting responses (I certainly do) and I do like to give them that. I'm just really bad about sitting down to do it, since socializing can suck up all your art time. Well, for that group, you could even put, "Nut or Aqua" as a sort of transitional thing, then maybe even in your dA signature something like "Just call me Nut 8D"? But yeah, actually saying it directly to a person, I find that hard to do, even on the internet. XD "Nut or Aqua", that's a good way to arrange it. I was actually going to put "Nut/Aqua" but then I thought the slash looked weird, like I'd just split up my username and shuffled it for some reason. xD I don't think I'll do the signature thing though, because that'd look like some subtle indirect attempt to address the issue directly, when I should have just done it directly in the first place instead of sneaking around hiding indirect direct hints in my signature... yeah, I wasn’t taking that sentence seriously. I always avoid saying something negative about a piece unless somewhere in the comments the person is directly asking for help. And not just "Constructive criticism appreciated," because I find most of the people who use that phrase are just not aware that constructive criticism involves pointing out bad things. :/ So unless their description says something like, "Please point out all the bad parts, I desperately need to know what they are!" or something like that, I'll usually just say good things. I've found that if someone asks for a critique and I take the time to actually write out a thoughtful one, they'll usually just go point-by-point and come up with excuses why something looks the way it does. -_- I really can't stand that. They're the ones who ask for the critique, and then get all defensive over every suggestion, it just makes it not worth the effort to have written the crit in the first place. Yeah… when I was younger I used to try to give critique to people, but recently I realized how awkward it is when I give critique to someone who obviously wasn’t looking for it, so I’ve stopped altogether and now just post positive comments. Plus, I don’t feel like I know my stuff well enough yet to give critique beyond a certain level, and a lot of pictures that have critique requested are either too advanced for me to critique or are so weak that I wouldn’t be able to say much beyond pointing out errors and saying “keep practicing”. And I personally never like for getting critiques from people when I didn't ask for them. A personal pet peeve of mine is someone critiquing a work of mine that I didn't request critiques for, and I look at their gallery and it's full of crummy MS Paint art. D8< It's exceedingly rare to get crits from someone who looks like they actually know what they're talking about, and when I do it's usually from my sister or my old college buddies. I dunno. I guess it's because I know my college friends know what they're talking about, we attended the same classes, but then these other random people don't really seem to practice what they preach, so I don't really trust that they know what they're talking about. And then it just seems like they like pointing out errors in other people's work because it makes THEM feel better. Ugh. I dunno. Yeah, I really appreciate critique from people who know what they’re talking about (or any kind of comment, really, because I just feel flattered to have been noticed by them), but the people with really weak art who go around critiquing others are just making fools of themselves. Actually, if you’ll excuse my rant, there’s this one person whose gallery is full of anime scribbles on notebook paper who keeps commenting on my stuff and critiquing me in a really gratingly condescending manner and I really wish she’d stop giving me so much attention. xD; Her critique of this doodle just made me laugh at its idiocy (and yet also aggravated me to no end for the same reason): -- OMG,so cute!Yah,I guess I'm that sorta Westerner(but I can draw, for the most part)...except i hate all other Westerners!YEAH!!Especially since all the gaming girls I've seen are fat ugly slobs.I'm the only skinny, pretty one who can actually draw anime!!...Ecept for folds.Couldn't do those for my life. Yeah, the Japanese translation is "Legend of Zelda:Steam Whistle of Earth". Okay,I shall critique this because I love you so much!XD Hmm...I know you weren't goign for the straight WindWaker style,so...be careful with layering--you're making the clothes seem thicker than they should be.And the anatomy is a little off. It's too blocky, even for the cartoony style.Try to tone it down a little, and don't be afraid to go all-out girly(I know,it sounds scary.Don't worry,i'm here for you *pats back**nod, nod*).That tends to really fit with this sort of style. Also,Link's legs and feet are off.Work on drawing criss-cross-apple-sauce(lol love first grade)--don't be afraid to fill a few pages of a sketchbook or something with just body parts.Watch anime and American cartoons, since you want to develop your own style, and practice drawing by using still pics.Anyway, for the proportions you were going for,the feet didn't work.I mean, you should've just made them widerl. Then that would've looked more "natural" and fitting.Oh,and by the way,you made the smaller eyes fit REALLY well. That's something that I haven't learned yet.Nice work. Over all, you're getting better as an artist.I remember some of your earlier work, and you've definitely improved.Great work, and keep going! -- I didn’t get any comments from her for a while and I thought she had forgotten about me, but then she came back again and started telling me that Zelda is too muscular in a couple of my recent pics. Luckily no more long critiques, though.

I've had people fave my art, and then remove it from their faves the next day. So... instead of not appreciating the faves I get, I simply just don't go to their profiles unless they also leave a comment or if I know who they are.

Of course, pageviews mean absolutely nothing. XD
I've found a lot of great art by checking out the galleries and favourites of people who comment/fav my stuff.

When I get a fave, I like to look at the profile of who it is. I don't thank them for the fave, but I do look around just because I'm curious. XD Sometimes I give them llamas, and if I like the artwork then I watch them (but that's pretty rare), but usually I just look around. XD

Every now and then I get random people faving random old stuff in my gallery, and I never bother to check if they're just randomly faving stuff for pageviews or anything, I tend to just delete the messages and move on with it. XD I guess that's why comments tend to mean more than faves. I, personally, don't fave something unless I decide I really like it, or if it's a fanart of something of mine... thus why my faves are so few.
As for critique, I rarely ever outright ask for critique, but I don't mind getting it. I mean, I might get a little ticked if someone were to dump a whole bunch of critique on me out of nowhere, but I'm not going to make a big deal of it. XD Though I'm the type whose general policy is that it's not worth it to make a big deal of things, so hey.
The thing that annoys me is those times when I do ask for critique and nobody says anything at all. >_> Of course that's usually when I'm begging for help with my shoddy Japanese, but still... it's hard to improve when no one's there to help improve. And you can still post regular comments if you don't have any critique! I like acknowledgment!

XD I go to their profiles for the same reason as Mowf... I've found a lot of great art. I mean, most of the time it isn't even that person's art. But I click around their profile and one thing leads to another until I get to really cool galleries I would have never seen otherwise. It's cool. XD

I just like seeing the number of favorites go up. Some of my most popular pictures are just doodles or things I didn't think would ever be noticed much, but the stuff that takes me a while sometimes doesn't get as many favorites as simple/funny things. It's amusingly ironic. xD I never go to the profiles of people who favorite, though. It would take too much time. I'm much more likely to visit profiles of people who comment, but I usually find art by looking in other people's favorites or just browsing with the search.

XD I love getting favorites or comments on older deviations! It shows that the person not only liked something I drew that was on the front page or the first page of my gallery, but that they liked it enough to explore my artwork and see it's progression over time. In a lot of ways that's the greatest way you can compliment me on DA. Ugh, I know how that is! I've lost track of how many times I've asked for help on something on DA and gotten not a single peep out of any of my watchers (except for my close friends who just say "I dunno..." but at least they acknowledge it.) That's part of why I started that redline threat in the art boards. At least here I can always count on at least ONE person taking time to give me the help I asked for. (I'm gonna take a minute to give kudos to Komori and Crystal, both of whom were very helpful to me when I asked for it. ^^)

Her critique of this doodle just made me laugh at its idiocy (and yet also aggravated me to no end for the same reason): *dies* That hurt me just reading it. First that random horrible comment "Especially since all the gaming girls I've seen are fat ugly slobs.I'm the only skinny, pretty one who can actually draw anime!" Wow. Just... wow. If I'd read that, I'd hide that comment immediately, because they are obviously a hideous person on the inside, saying that everyone else is a fat ugly slob and they're pretty and skinny. *dies* And then how she condescendingly encourages you with pats on the back and nods? D8< Rawraawrrawr! And then calls you a dummy? No, no, no. If that happened to me, I'd block that girl and hide all her hideous catty comments. DDDDDDDDDDDD8<<<<<< *deep calming breaths* Question: When someone removes a pic from their faves, do you get notified? I've never had, so I don't know if it's never happened to me or I just haven't noticed. XD Nope, they don't get notified. *tried it with my sis's pic* __ And I usually visit a person's page if they say something different that catches my eye. Like, if someone comments on my animation and says they like the way I "eased out of that moving hold," then I'll perk up at their animation jargon, and go to check out their gallery. It's usually to see if they're either 1) an animator whose work I definitely want to fave/watch, or 2) a person who has bad art and absolutely no animation in their galleries and is just blowing smoke. XDDD I'm always interested in whether or not someone is just talking a big talk. Also I like clicking avatars that look good/interesting. Which brings me to another peeve of mine: People not doing their own avatars. D:< And I'm not just talking about using a screencap from a movie or cartoon, because then it's obvious you didn't draw it. But I really don't like it when people commission other artists to draw their avatars. You know what that is? False advertising. Come on, dA isn't Facebook, it's a site for art. So why won't you do your own art?? :/ If you sculpt, you should have an avatar of your sculptures. If you take photos, use one of your photos. Your avatar is an advertisement, use it to its full potential. For example, I have an animated kitty avatar that I made myself. I've had SO many people comment on my page that they found my gallery because they were attracted to my avatar. And I did my avatar myself, so it wasn't just a bait-and-switch, "Oh here's an awesome avatar, but psyche your mind here's a crappy gallery!"

For the past month and a half I was wearing an avatar that I didn't make, but I didn't commission it, it had been given to me as a gift. I wore it because I appreciated the gesture. The one I'm wearing now I also didn't make, but that's because myself and two of my friends are now wearing linking avatars that form a picture, so it would be sort of hard for each of us to draw our own and have it look right... Up until then all of my avatars were thumbnails of my own artwork, but I don't see any problem in accepting gifts given to me by friends.
