What the heck does this emoticon >_> mean? What are the eyes supposed to be doing?

I always thought it was supposed to be shifty/dodgy eyes.

What the heck does this emoticon >_> mean? What are the eyes supposed to be doing? What Nut said. I always pictured it in the context of like a shifty squint.

I use >_> as an annoyed or sometimes shifty eyes face.

I've always thought that >_> and the variations were just shifty eyes. How are they also annoyed eyes?
EDIT: For me, they've also doubled as me being in thought. Like how people look in different directions when they're thinking. (Don't know what each direction means, though.)

Like how people look in different directions when they're thinking. (Don't know what each direction means, though.) I've read that looking to the left generally means your brain is creating something--like lying, or mentally "talking" to yourself--and looking to the right means that you're remembering something. As far as being annoyed, perhaps it means the person is rolling their eyes?

I've always thought that >_> and the variations were just shifty eyes. How are they also annoyed eyes? I don't know..it's just what I see them as. I've had this discussion/argument many times before. XDDD They look like glaring eyes, or something. So basically, >.> Looks more shifty/mischievous than >_> does, imo.

Ah, I see on the shifty eyes things. (Boy, I sure use the left-shifty one a lot. XD )
I guess I can kinda see how it would be glaring... But I've never seen it as an annoyed one... Is there a better emoticon for that? Because I don't think I can get used to >_> meaning an annoyed face...

There's >.<, but I think that symbolizes a much stronger annoyance than >.>, which is more like a "If you say so" kind of gesture. I dunno. xD Emoticons are pictures, and everyone interprets pictures differently. Knowing the "definition" of each one can give you the general idea, but you've still got to decide on their most likely meaning based on the context they're used in.

For annoyed eyes, I'll use >.< "Duh!" or 9.9 or e.e for *rolls eyes*. Also -_- for "oh geez..." And then you add a semi colon to >.>; for sweat, like saying "erm, I'm not sure that's right, but I guess I'll go along with it"
.. I think smilies should be considered an art. *nod*

I think when >_> is used for annoyance, it's to resemble this sort of expression: (not exact, but it should give you an idea) >.< is more pained, like the subject is annoying you so badly you're about to snap.

I think when >_> is used for annoyance, it's to resemble this sort of expression: Then this would be far more accurate: ô_ó

Probably, but I don't even know how to make those characters without opening the character map and spending two minutes digging through it. Smilies are meant to be fast. x3 Plus ô_ó looks like it's looking straight ahead, whereas a sideways glance is implied in >_>.
