I think we need, a little mechanical ride you see outside of the grocery stores! XD

Windows might be a good idea. If we're going with badlands we'll have lots of rock formations and such, and if we're going with sandy dunes we might be able to make some kind of cactus garden. They'll have to be tinted windows to keep all of the sun's heat out.
...Actually, we could put the rock formations and cactus garden inside, where they won't be subject to sudden rainstorms or erosions or the like. Of course, we'll need to find a way to keep passengers from messing with the displays.
If all else fails, we'll install wireless Internet access.

Let's just install wireless internet access from the start shall we?

*just noticed this thread*
Why a desert? If we want to have tourism, wouldn't we want something less out-of-the-way?
And why would it be easier to build in a sand-dune desert? Keng mentioned drilling, so either way we'd need to dig to make a good spot to build. But with a sand-dune desert, you'd need to work against sandstorms blowing sand all over the building before it's even finished. Unless you know a force field that won't get in the way of construction. Though if it blocks sand, I think we'd still have to dig ourselves out after a storm.
We could clean up falling sand by having it fall or sucked into a pit and then blown in the air. Of course, then we'd be raining sand on whoever's outside...
... *laughs at mental image*

A temperate area with actual ground would be easier to build on. What kind of terraforming and/or engineering technology does Spacefleet have?

Spacefleet has the top two eart mages, that could do some landscaping for ya. Though Strife hasn't been too too active, understandably.

*blinks* ... you mean.. use... magic?
Well.. I suppose you could help but.. then where would be the fun in that? Besides, you do too much of the work and the SF Construction Worker's Union might get on our backs. A lot of them are robots too. Very heavy. Not the sort of thing you want on your back. For coolness factor a desert would still be fun though.
I'm sure we have some geological surveys sitting around somewhere that could help us find a good spot.

I like the option of locating in a desert, simply because it would put minimal strain on the environment. If we were to put it, say, in the middle of a grassland, that's a lot of displaced flora and fauna. Many deserts are just flat rock with a bit of sand and some scrub brush, neither dunes nor badlands. Placing it there would mean we could be relatively ecofriendly. Of course, this consideration implies that the spaceport is pretty large, and I assume it is. But on the other hand, this also implies that we can find such a desert near Tabloid Town, which I doubt. I've always imagined the region surrounding it to be more like a thick forest.

It would also make it less likely that we would conflict with the other guilds about construction space, because few other people would want deserts. And if Jade Phoenix are anything to go by, large portions of the NTWF as a whole is forest. Anyone remember any deserts in NTWF lore?

Well, according to guild-Ntweff lore Ntweff (no official spelling available) is a planet unto itself. We've even made up identified more than one moon orbiting it, one of which hold SF HQ. So it's only logical to conclude that somewhere there is a desert. I was also thinking along Fraze's line of thought in terms of minimum impact to the ecosystem. I'm sure some of our dedicated inter-galactic 'tree' huggers would be happy to help re-locate what few desert life forms we do find where ever we choose to build the base. It's also important to note that a long term shield that doesn't go down could have unknown effects on local lifeforms. I also highly suggest we ensure that there are no sand worms or sand worm-like creatures in whatever desert we select as those have been known to be attracted by shields and are big enough to swallow a ship whole.
But hey.. this isn't Arrakis or anything, but still good to take such possible ramifications into consideration.
Also, considering the base will be a center for multiple ships of varrying sizes but mostly large.... yes... this will be a large base. Much of the old Tabloid Town Traffic will be re-directed here though I imagine some of the smaller carriers will continue to operate from that port, but this is overall an opportunity for expansion to accommodate a larger and greater range of ships. We will of course have to be careful about who we allow but intergalactic tourism TO the NTWF might even occur.

((Oh, goody... )) Actually, Jade Phoenix doesn't take place on the main continent of the NTWF, but on a large, vacation-island. Still, most of the area near Tabloid Town is trees, grass, and ocean. I don't think there's any deserts that the natives could reach by land in less than a day. Maybe even a week. Or more.
We could build an underground tunnel/transportation system. It would be a major project. But it could be worth it if people can use it to get to the spaceport quickly.

Well it's only natural that a pirate would flee from security forces. It's not like we're discussing anything top secret here. Infact most of our discussion right now is related to sight seeing potential and maintenance/cleaning. Not exactly high end security stuff and I would welcome input from potential tourists on what they might like. *picks up Rider and ignores the fact that she probably still can't hear or see.* So mate, what kind of stuff would you like to see in a waiting room for passengers? [glow=red,2,300]Friendlier reception. x_o I'd like those things that Fraze mentioned, plus a wide variety of magazines from different alien cultures, all translated into a variety of languages. Also, a free mini-bar. Not that all mini-bars aren't free for me. >.> Anyway, where there are mountains, there is possibly desert. And I know the Netwuff has mountains that are semi-close to civilization. Is the Dojo in the mountains, does anyone know?[/glow]

Maybe build roads and buses to go on them or something. I'd prefer a train, myself. It'd be more work to build, but simpler in the long run. A train can be automated more easily than a bus, and I think it would be more energy efficient. As for amenities in the waiting room: as with any transit center, we'll need to have outrageously overpriced low-quality food and a souvenir stall for people returning from Spacefleet.

I'm too exhausted to add anything more to this conversation than a note that Ethan and X-3 use the same color for OOC communication, I believe; but that's probably because it's been so long since I've had X-3 say -anything-.
