Omni sat down at a large, round table in the manor's library, and set down a ruled notebook and a pencil. She had recently organized a study group, and the first study meeting was going to start soon. She had asked the others to bring any notes they had on situations when magic could be strengthened, whether the were from studied material or from self-observation, or to at least bring paper and a writing utensil. She had never been in a study group before, so she imagined that this would likely be different from most study groups, though she wasn't sure how.
She glanced at a clock. She had come early to set things up, though now the others would start coming soon.
((Basically we're sharing ideas on situations [i.e. time of day, geographical, etc.] where different kinds of magic can be enhanced. We could possibly apply some of these in roleplays.
Do you think I should put notes in this first post, for easy reference, as we go along?))

Goosh knocked on the door nervously, twiddling his stylus in his hand. He had asked to join the mages, though his status was uncertain. Well, no harm in trying. He opened the library door.
"Hello," he said to Omni, sitting down next to her and smiling.

Apparently oversleeping was not good when there was a class to be had. Okay, technically this was a study group, but nonetheless, being late was not an appealing thought. Drakhé's alarm clock had been screaming at him for the past half-hour by the time he finally left his room.
In order to save time, he had tried changing into his ectros form - becoming a ghost to pass through walls and floors - only to remember that given the nature of the Manor, that was a bad idea. So instead he took a shortcut, via a hole in the wall that just so happened to end up close to the library. Afterwards the hole disappeared. Strange, he thought.
The moment he entered, Drakhé saw that his desperation to not be late had paid off - only two others were in the room. He gave a nervous "Hi." before taking his seat at the table, setting down a moderately-sized hardback book and a rather large pencil.

Salamander pushed open the door a crack, saw three people already gathered, and quietly sidestepped into the room. She sat down in the first chair she came to. "Hi," she said to the group in general.

Aly quietly entered and sat down in the nearest chair, which happened to be by Salah. "'Ey guys," she murmured, unusually subdued for one of the few times in her life. With that greeting, she fished in a pocket and came up with a small stick and a notepad. After the stick had been set alight, she set the charcoal and paper on the table and leaned back in her chair. "A'one 'ave chocolate or some kinda sugar?"

"Hello, hello, hello, hello," Omni said fairly quickly to the three other mages. She paused for a moment, considering the time and how many were there. "I guess now would be a good time to start. "Welcome to the first official meeting of the Natural Magic Enhancement Study Group. As you may have noticed, sometimes one may cast the same spell at two different times, or more, and the strength will vary for seemingly no reason. Well most of the time this is caused by natural and seemingly unimportant things, like what time it is. …No seriously. Well we're here to discuss these things, share what we know about them, study about them, and possibly learn to use them to our advantage." She held up her notebook. "I asked you each to bring a notebook. Be ready to jot down things you learn at any time. If you really need a piece of paper, I'll let to take a blank one from the back of mine. I've written down some of these enhancements that I've learned about. I'll let you pass it around and take a look." She handed it to the first person on her left. "Now these are my personal notes, so you'll see things like notes to myself and comments." Some basic things that have an affect on elemental magic. (Does how much the magic is affected depend on the general strength of the spell? Research.)
Seasons
Some spells are stronger at certain times of year. Water = Winter - The coldest time of year. Days are short and frozen water gathers on top of things. Earth = Spring - The time of year when plants begin to grow again. The earth grows warm and more fertile. (Things anew/birth) Fire = Summer - The hottest time of the year. The days are long and fires are more likely to start. Air = Fall - Harvest time. Leaves fall from the trees. The air is often crisp and breezy. (Things end/death) (Find out if there is an affect with other forms of magic)
Time of day
Some spells are stronger at certain times of day. (Find out how much relation this has to the sun/moon) Earth = Near dawn (New day/birth) Fire = Near noon (When it's hottest) Air = Around sunset (End of day/death) Water = Near midnight (When it's coldest) (Hey… that's the same order as the seasons)
Compass directions
Some spells are stronger depending on the direction you face/Cast it?. (Find out if this is when you start preparing the spell, when the spell starts, or while the spell lasts) Earth = East (toward the sunrise) Fire = South in the northern hemisphere, north in the souther hemisphere (toward where the sun is up for the same amount of time?/exactly centered in the sky at noon?) Air = West (toward the sunset) Water = South in southern hemisphere, north in northern hemisphere (toward where the sun is missing some of the time and it's cold) (…Okay, the rotational pattern is getting creepy. Find out if there's a north/south variation between the tropics, and what happens when you're right where the sun is centered)"As you can see," Omni continued, "I have info on more general times and the four most common magical elements. These are fairly general and affect most variations of these elements, though there may be some exceptions. Naturally some enhancements are stronger than others, but they still add up. I only have some simple stuff right now, and I'd like to learn more. That's why I started this, so we can all learn from eachother and gain something from it. Now naturally there will be things that we, even as a group, won't know," she paused, smiling, "that's why I chose the library for our meeting place, so we can study from what even more mages have written. "Any questions before we continue?"

Before long, others had come, and the lesson... no, meeting had begun. The dragon had to admit: he was glad that in this guild, he was more or less an equal to what would normally be considered "lesser" beings. All were here to learn and discuss.
He flipped open his book - the pages were blank, not even with writing lines. It was... a sketchbook? Omni's notebook came, he copied down part of the notes, then passed it on. And sure enough, he'd doodled little illustrations to these notes. Hey, it helped him learn.
The direction you face affects the spell...? Absurd!
Then a question came to him. Drakhé hesitated a moment before raising his hand.
"Wouldn't the... the weather play a part in affecting spells as well? I think it's logical."

"We'll be covering whatever we'd like to cover. This is just what I have in my notebook right now. Actually, if you look at the bottom of the 'seasons' part, you'll notice I made a note to myself to find out how other kinds of magic are affected. Again, group knowledge, I figure people who specialize in certain kinds of magic would be most likely to have learned things about the kinds they specialize in. So whatever we'd like to learn that involves affects on the strength of magic and thing like that, we can cover."
She turned to Drakhé. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure weather affects various kinds of magic, I just don't have that in there… yet."

Most of us have specialised magic... that would make sense.
"Ah," the dragon went in reply to Omni. "It would make sense... I was kinda reminded of someone I met a while ago. He was a lightning mage - I think. And he... complained that he never got enough lightning storms." A small smile crossed his face. Obviously he found some humour in that.
With that, he sat back into his chair. This lesson... no, meeting... could very well be helpful. Maybe he could offer some of his knowledge of the spiritual if asked as well... Um... maybe not.

Goosh pulled a notebook from out of his coat, jotting down Omni's notes. He passed it on, and looked up. "In fact, I think natural enhancements can apply to almost all celestial bodies. I tried grouping the planets to basic elements, though it was a bit tricky. And I've been studying the effects of water spells at the full moon."

"On the subject of weather," Salah said. "Although this isn't exactly the same as making light magic stronger, you can obviously control more light on a brighter day simply because there's more light to control."

Omni also laughed when Drakhé mentioned the lightning mage. Then listened as the others' comments.
"I suppose there are no more questions then?" She paused, "Well then, how about we share what we already know then?
"Or if not, we could go pick out a few books and study a bit, together."

Post by Rikku on Dec 23, 2007 18:10:57 GMT -5
Rikku shot through the door, almost unsettling an inconveniently placed desk. For a second she looked around, stunned. She hadn't been in the library before, and the sheer amount of books was astonishing. Then she roused herself and quietly sat down at the round table.
A notebook came round, and Rikku read through it carefully, keeping an ear open for the other Mage's comments. They all seemed to have quite a lot to say. Rikku held up her hand, not wanting to interrupt, but wanting to say something.
"Um, I don't know if any of you have encountered this, but ... I find it easier to use magic of certain types in certain environments. I mean ... one time I went to a ... graveyard ..." Come on, Rikku, these people aren't going to mind that. "And necromancy was a lot easier," she continued in a stronger voice. "I didn't even need to use my wand or my pouch, and I even managed to animate a human for a few seconds ..." She paused and coughed. "Anyway, it made me think that maybe some kinds of magic are easier when they're surrounded my similar things?" That came out wrong ... "Like, fire magic being stronger in an area with volcanic activity, or water magic being stronger by an ocean? Sort of like what Salah said with light magic - being easier to use it when there's a lot of light - like it being easier to use magic when there's a lot of your element around ...?" She trailed off, wondering if she had made any kind of sense. "Anyway, it was just a thought." She passed the notebook on to the next person, then paused. A fire mage - Aly? - had just laid down on the table. "Tell me when we start," she said, her voice muffled. Rikku blinked.
"Um, are you sleeping ...?" she asked, confused. She seemed to recall her saying something about sugar. "I have a bag of sugar cubes for quick energy. If you want some, just ask!" she said helpfully.
