Before too long, both Omni and Aly had succeeded in not only breaking the light away from its source but in forming it into a coherent shape. "Wow, good job," Salah said, briefly startled at how fast they'd learned. Of course, they're all elemental mages, she reminded herself. Of course they could catch onto another element faster than a beginner.
"Okay..." Salah said, biting the inside of her lip as she thought. "It looks like you're all starting to get the hang of it. Um, the next thing we'll work on is a bit of a jump from where you are, but that's okay. Now that you know how to divert light for your own purposes and how to shape it, we'll work on building your concentration by maintaining a shape, and we'll combine that with hand-eye coordination by playing 'catch.'" She made finger quotes in the air. "'Throwing' a ball of light, of course, is a complete illusion, since you are really guiding the light's every move mentally."
Salah gathered a small sphere of light from Surf's lamp into her hand. "Manipulate this as if you were holding it, throwing it to each other, and catching it. Each of you should control it from the time you catch it until the next person does. Try to keep it in at least a vaguely sphere-like shape, and try to make it believable that you are holding it in your hand and using your arm to throw it - but don't worry too much about the ball's arc in the air, because that's more advanced."
Salah stepped back. "I'll make sure it doesn't dissipate entirely. Omni, you take it first."

((Since I was gone yesterday and whatnot and missed the last activity, let's assume I pulled it off successfully. ^^'))
Surf was instantly worried when Salah declared that they would be playing "catch." She had the worst aim in the world, and was probably going to hit someone or something. As Salah passed the ball to Omni, Surf thought "please don't throw it to me, please don't throw it to me."

"Woah!" the Salah caught Omni by surprise as she 'tossed' the light ball to her. It took Omni a moment to really get a mental grip on the ball, but once she had, she reshaped it back to look fairly spherical again. She 'held' it for a moment, then 'tossed' it to Aly.

"Good luck," Aly breathed to herself as Omni tossed the light ball. She could almost feel when the Zafara let off her mental control of the ball, and reached out a hand for the sphere while following the arc it seemed to be taking. With a step back, she "caught" the ball of light, spun once, and then smoothly lobbed it towards Surf, grinning slightly at the mage's worried expression. Then she fell over. Nice. "Shut up," Aly muttered, quickly righting herself. For an archer, I have lousy coordination.

Rikku stood with her ear pressed at the door, trying to make out every word. Eavesdropping wasn’t polite, she knew, and in a manor full of mages she’d have to make sure she toed the line, but the girl was nervous. The only magic she had any power over was some fire and necromancy. Some people didn’t even consider the second one magic at all. Hopefully, people here would be different, but Rikku didn’t want to make herself too conspicuous, just in case.
But still … She sighed. She had to start sometime, right?
Her hand reached towards the doorknob, and before she had time for any more self-doubt, she turned it and walked in.
The three beginner light mages were tossing a ball of light around. Rikku stared in awe – how she’d like to do that! – but knew she had better practice first, particularly as she hadn’t tried any magic apart from her own. She walked quickly to the front and took a desk lamp. She smiled and nodded at the mage who was hosting it, feeling like an idiot, and sat at one of the desks to try.
She’d overhead enough of the discussion to know what she should do. Concentrate on bending the light. Got it. Rikku stared at the little bulb till she thought her eyes would pop out of her head. Heh. That was an amusing –
Concentrate. Right.
This time, the young mage imagined she saw the light falling on the ground beside her. She thought of the light landing there, imagined the little rays changing direction –
Rikku blinked. Had she seen a more concentrated patch of light there, just for a second? She smiled. “I think I’m getting it!” she cried, too excited to think of her embarrassment.

"I think I'm getting it!"
The new voice took Salah completely by surprise, causing her to almost jump in the air. Quickly turning her head, she saw a girl with dark (and nicely dyed, she thought) hair. "Oh. Hi. Sorry, I didn't see that... try doing it again?"
Remembering her previous students, Salah turned back to Aly, who had just fallen down in the process of 'throwing' the light ball. "That was pretty good," Salah told her, "but you don't need to do it with so much flair if it makes it hard to concentrate."

Surf was not pleased when Aly passed the ball of light to her, but When Aly fell over, it relaxed Surf so she could concentrate on passing the ball. But a voice exclaiming "I think I'm getting it!" caused her to horribly miss Salah, her target, knocking over a lamp instead. "Gah! Who was that?!"

((xD It's not solid, Surf; you don't have to worry about knocking anything over.))
Surf, too, jumped at the voice, completely losing control of the sphere of light. "Gah! Who was that?!" Salah gathered it back into a ball next to her. "Well, um..." Salah realized that she had forgotten completely to ask the newcomer's name. "I think she came in late. Um, what's your name?" she asked the girl.

"That was pretty good, but you don't need to do it with so much flair if it makes it hard to concentrate." "It wasn't flair, it was..." Aly trailed off and tried to think of what to say, but was--thankfully--interrupted by an excited cry of "I think I’m getting it!" The mage spun around and glanced the newcomer. "Lika?" she said under her breath. Dark, as well as a little fire. Doesn't seem too malevolent. "Which is the same thing you said for Salah," she pointed out. You never know. "Cats." She looked at the light ball--now by Salah's side--and back at the newcomer, who she thought she'd seen somewhere before. "Is that a frying pan?"

The teacher looked startled. "Oh. Hi. Sorry, I didn't see that... try doing it again?"
"Okay, no problem!" Rikku concentrated on the light again. This time, she worked on strengthening the beam. It got stronger for a moment, and the surrounding area got slightly darker. Rikku grinned, delighted, but then winced and the light returned to normal.
"Headache," she explained to no one in particular, rubbing her temples. "If I try that again, I think I'll narrow the beam as well so it doesn't take as much energy ... ugh."
The mage who was passing the ball missed. "Gah! Who was that?!"
"Oh, I'm sorry!" Rikku exclaimed, blushing. "I didn't mean to startle anyone!"
The light mage who was teaching the class said, "Well, um ... I think she came in late. Um, what's your name?"
"I'm Rikku Dianthe," Rikku explained quickly. "Sorry I came in late, but I was ..." Eavesdropping. "Nervous."
A fire mage seemed to be having a conversation with mid-air, though she was looking at her cat. Telepathy? Rikku wondered, then dismissed the thought. Doesn't matter. Then the mage looked back at Rikku. "Is that a frying pan?"
"Well ... yeah." Rikku laughed and spun her frying pan. "Looong story ... it comes in handy, particularly when I'm fighting and don't want to use magic." Not that necromancy is particularly good for fighting, anyway.
Rikku concentrated on the lamp again, trying to strengthen and narrow the beam again, and succeeded for a few seconds. "Great!

"Oh..." Aly trailed off, grinning. "'Ey." You know her? Aly waved her hand in a 'so-so' way, then looked back at Salah. "Are we starting up again?" she asked, tossing a small flame from hand to hand. Show-off, Lika muttered to herself.

"Are we starting up again?" Aly asked.
"Oh. Right. Yeah," said Salah, arcing ((is that even a word?)) the ball back to Aly. Turning to Rikku, she said, "Don't strain yourself too much - it won't help. Just try to 'wrap your mind around' the form you want the light to take. Concentration can be difficult and frustrating, but it shouldn't be exhausting."
Remembering that Rikku had just arrived, Salah added, "Right now, everyone else is playing illusionary 'catch' with a ball of light. If you can maintain control over a small amount of light, you can join in."

Rikku nodded. "Okay. Thank you."

"Great!" Rikku said enthusiastically, and set to shaping the light, not trying so exhaustively this time.

Aly caught it once again--it was easy when she pretended it was a bright fireball. Managing not to fall over this time, she lobbed it to Omni. ((Gah. Two-liner. -_-))

Omni 'caught' the ball, more easily this time. She also 'tossed' it between her hands for awhile before she 'tossed' it to Surf.
((Well, personally I don't think there's much else you could do during something like this in a roleplay.))
