Hi, everyone. Sorry this took such a long, long time to get started. Since some people might not have noticed this while it was dead, I'm letting any mage who wants to join.
"Um, hi. I'm Salamander--I think you all already know that, though. This class is a light magic class, for beginners.
"The first thing I'm going to go over is, basically, how to break light from its natural patterns and get a hold on it. Then, I guess we might go on to actually manipulating light for your purposes. But, well, that would come later."
Salah straightened her shirt and tucked a stand of hair behind her ear nervously. "First, though, if anyone has any questions about light magic or... um, yeah, if there's anything you want to ask."

Surf walked into the classroom, clutching a pen and a notebook. She sat down a few rows away from the front and listened to Salah outline the course.
When Salah finished, she asked, "first, though, if anyone has any questions about light magic or... um, yeah, if there's anything you want to ask."
Surf raised her hand, and asked, "is it true that you can use light magic to make enemies turn against each other?"
((^Total video game cliche there, but I just had to do it. XD))

Surf was the first one to arrive. "Is it true that you can use light magic to make enemies turn against each other?" she asked.
Salah blinked. "Um... no. That sounds like some sort of mind control magic to me. Maybe that's a term used for a different type of magic than what we'd call light magic, from somewhere else, or maybe there are some types of magic that are a blend of light magic and something else. It's not that rare to use light along with different forms of magic to make an appearance."

Omni, who had taken a seat near the front row, raised her paw. "Can you change the wavelength of light to change its color, or can you only control its area, shape, movement, and concentration?"

Omni spoke up. "Can you changed the wavelength of light to change its color," she asked, "or can you only control its area, shape, movement, and concentration?"
Salah smiled a little at a question she knew she could answer. "Actually, yes, you can do exactly that. It does take a lot of concentration. But it's definitely out there."

After staring at Surf like she was crazy (which she probably was), Salah replied, "Um... no. That sounds like some sort of mind control magic to me. Maybe that's a term used for a different type of magic than what we'd call light magic, from somewhere else, or maybe there are some types of magic that are a blend of light magic and something else. "Oh, okay then." Surf made a note in her notebook, and then looked back up at Salah.

"Ah, okay." Omni smiled, it sounded like she could have some fun with light magic. She pondered what kinds of patters she could make and other things she could do with it, as she waited for Salah to continue.

"Right," Salah said. "Well... the only one who isn't here is Aly, I think, so I guess we'll start when she arrives."

A very dishelved and rather smoky Allianne stumbled into Salah's class, followed by a head-shaking Lika. "Sorry," the fire mage announced, glaring down as she plopped into a set by Surf. "Someone decided I needed to learn to handle dragonfire." I apologize for your incompetence, Lika said with an amused twitch of her tail. I thought you were fire-proof. "You know darn-well I'm not fire-proof against dragon or mage fire," she growled. "And my clothes are worse." The girl looked up and tried to shake a little more ash from her hair. "This'll take forever to repair...Sorry I'm late, Salah." If you want to regain some dignity, ask a question. "I've got no dignity, you over-grown demon furball," Aly snapped. "Whatever...Salah, since this is a light magic class, can I manipulate the light from my fire or do I need something else?" She leaned back in her chair and glanced down with a sigh at the charred pile of fabric that had been her only change of clothes. "Great," she muttered to herself. "I'm going to have to beg to MGA now for some fire-protected clothes. Oh, this will be great."

Aly trudged in, looking like a forest fire refugee. "Sorry I'm late, Salah," she said, looking up from her argument with her cat for just long enough to speak. "Um, that's okay..." Salah said.
"Salah, since this is a light magic class, can I manipulate the light from my fire or do I need something else?" Aly asked, still sounding rather put-out at her cat.
"Um, yeah, you can," Salah said. "Fire is a source of light, after all."
Looking around, she realized that everyone was there. Swallowing, she said, "Okay, I guess we can get started.
"The first thing we're going to do is just working on how to get a grasp on light. As you can tell, it will follow predictable, natural patterns unless you wrench it out of them. So... the place to start is with a good source of light. Of course, light is really all around us - otherwise, we wouldn't be able to see - but it's easiest to start with a strong light source. So, um, I brought some desk lamps to class--" she gestured to a few small bendy lamps with compact fluorescent lightbulbs "--that you can use as a light source.
"Now, the way you use magic to control light... it's not really something that can be explained in words. But, um, I know all of you are elemental mages -- you all understand how magic can be used with the elements. Light and darkness are different from earth and water and air in that they are not solid things, so physical strength and gestures are irrelevant in this branch of magic except for creating illusions of solidity and learning coordination. Light magic is entirely mental, so if you haven't done so before, this is when you need to learn to use only your mind and magic, and not your body. This doesn't require any kind of strength, physical or mental or even magical. It only requires concentration and precision."
Salah realized she had already come to the end of her explanation. "Okay, well, um... I guess, each of you take a lamp, and see what you can do. If you're having trouble with anything, I'll try to help you."

When Aly finally arrived, she was a charred mess. She sat down next to Surf, and Salah proceeded to begin the class.
The group was going to manipulate the light from desk lamps for the first exercise. After the lamps had been distributed, Surf began to attempt to bend the light. She focused her energy on the light, and suceeded in bending it, but in Salah's face. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry Salah!" exclaimed Surf, cursing herself for her klutziness.

Omni turned on the lamp, and stared at the beam of light, concentrating, with no results for some time before remembering what she had to do in her other classes to cast spells.
"'Scuse me, would you mind if I nicked just a bit of your energy? I think I might need it. Salah? Surf?"

Surf went straight to work on the task, soon managing to divert the light from the lamp. More specifically, she diverted it straight into Salah's face. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, Salah!" Surf exclaimed.
Salah laughed. "That's fine," she told Surf. "Light doesn't hurt my eyes anyway... just try to be more careful in the future."
Thinking, she added, "Since you can do that, try forming the light into a simple shape like a line and holding it there. Remember, it's all mental - to hold a shape, you need to concentrate on where you want everything to be, so try something simple."
Omni spoke up. "'Scuse me, would you mind if I nicked just a bit of your energy? I think I might need it. Salah? Surf?"
Salah bit her lip. "...I guess," she finally said, realizing that she didn't know enough about Omni's magic to justify any restrictions.

Omni held her handpaw near Salah's head. Feeling her aura, Omni took a small portion of Salah's magic energy; not enough that Salah would be weakened or tired, but enough that she would be able to use it. "Thanks." She stored most of the energy she took in her crystal, and returned to focusing on her lamp. First she worked on getting a feel for the light, then on moving it. Soon the beam of light began to wiggle and curve. "I'm getting it…"

((I must stop these long posts of nonsense and Lika/Aly battles. xD Really, I should...))
Aly stood up, grabbed a desk lamp, and quickly sat back down in her chair. "Concentration...eh-heh, right." Do not doubt yourself. "Shut up," she muttered as she flicked the light on. A weak beam shone at the ceiling. "Too weak," the fire mage sighed. "Well..." The girl stared at the flickering beam while absently playing with one of her knives. Nothing physical...well, everything she did involved some kind of gesture, whether or not it was needed for the magic. Her hands always had to be doing something... Focus, will you? Aly almost fell out of her chair, but righted herself in time. She also managed to tip the desk over, which would have smacked Surf's desk if Lika hadn't been in the way. "Stop it!" You need to focus, the cat said simply. "Well, I can't if..." She stopped, then dropped her voice to a low hiss. "I can't if you keep interrupting me. Too bad. Concentrate. "You are no help, you know." Aly sighed and scooped the lamp from the floor, straighting the neck and flicking it on again. "Now..." Within a few minutes and two attempted kicks at Lika, Aly had succeeded in momentarily narrowing and strengthening the beam.
