"Then let's find out if there's at least a scrap; that watershrimp'n'otroot soup seemed seasons ago," Kernave opened a large wooden door that was connected to the dining hall. There were a lot of hares cleaning up the large table in the center, some grabbing plates and other things, cleaning them with clothes.
"Look's like we're a tad late," Kernave grinned. "Well, let's see if that cook will let us in."

"Doubtful," I said, attempting to comb my fur a bit.
"Ther cook's prob'ly too tuckered out te cook any more, don't ye think? Lookit all those hares! An' just a 'an'full o' cooks cookin' fer the lot? Surprised the cook ain't fallen asleep in ther food yet."

"Aye, but 'e is an 'are, right? Ye'd think 'e'd be eaten 'is weight in food by now, aye!" Kernave laughed. "Oh yes, and d'you think they'd actually not chuck ye out? I mean, you're a..." Kernave paused, before whispering, "a... ferret."
"Well, I might get into th'kitchens n'elp 'round, maybe. I could use a bit of cooking in me life."

I grinned.
"Ah, don' worry 'bout me. I'll be fine. In fact..." I trailed off and slipped into a slightly shadowed corner. Opening my haversack, I took out several bundles wrapped in water-proof cloth.
From one, I took out a pawful of dying herbs and patted them along my body, making my fur darker. From another bundle, I took out a small mask-or that's what others would think it as, on first sight. Slipping it over my snout and tying it behind my head, it made my snout look wider. I had sewn shed otter fur onto the outside, so it actually looked like part of my nose. From the final bag I pulled out a hood, which I slipped over my head. This, too, had otter fur sewn on the outside. The hood hid my ears, as well as the string holding the first mask in place. The strings holding the hood on my head could be concealed by a pretty scarf from another bundle, and so that the scarf didn't look out of place I wore a tunic with a slightly feminine cut and pants with wider legs, almost making them look like a skirt.
"I've bin 'round other non-otters, yessee. Learned how te conceal m'self, make m'look like a real otter, y'know?" I said, grinning, as I came out of the shadows.

"I still say they'd chuck ye out o'th'mountain, aye," Kernave shrugged, looking around. "Now, maybe a diversion'll get that cook outta those kitchens, eh? How 'bout I just run into th'kitchens and ask 'round...?" Kernave scratched her chin, walking through the door to the kitchens.

Brez dashed into the kitchens, where the cook and his assistants were making breakfast for tommorow. "Hi, Cooky ol' sport, wot!" Brez calls out cheerfully. "C'n me good otter chap friend cook up somehtin' usin' yore kitchens 'n cookin' stuff thaht cooks use?"
The cook glared angrily at the haremaid. "First off, me name's not Cooky. 'N these be my kitchens! I ain't abotu to start letting flippin' otters runnin' all 'round in here!"
Brez's ears drooped. "But sah--"
"OUT!"

Kernave blinked, watching the hare in charge shouting at Brez. "Please sir, can't ye let a goodbeast cook in 'ere? I know! I can whip up somethin', an' you can try it...? If ye like it, then ye'll 'afta let me and Brez 'ere anytime. What do ye say 'bout that, sir?" Kernave smiled innocently, grabbing an apple from a passing hare.
"Yore apples are a bit mushy, aye," Kernave muttered, biting into it.
