The guard came over to us. "What's the village called?"
"St. Marina," I answered.
"Well, then, you're far off track! That's almost three hundred miles to the east!"
"I guess we won't be reaching there tonight, then. Do you know of any good inns nearby?"

"You must bear an extreme resemblance if they would arrest you for looking like one," Lina muttered. Louder - she didn't mind the guard hearing this - she said, "It's really cold, isn't it? The winds are picking up, and I haven't seen any inns."

"There's one down that road, if you have the gold for it," said the guard, pointing. "They're used to getting elves of all sorts there."
"Thank you, sir," I said, bowing my head. The guard left, and I breathed a sigh of relief. "Mielikki, I hate guards," I muttered.

Lina nodded and watched the guard move on. "Guess he's used to seeing elves, then. So, are we going to an inn....," she glanced back over her shoulder and found the guard out of hearing range, "or go somewhere else?"

I dug in my pocket for a bit, coming up with a handful of gold, and counted it. "I don't know what you want to do, but I have to stay here for a bit. Khelben Arunsun-the wizard of Blackstaff Tower-has an item that rightfully belongs to me and my family, and I intend to reclaim it," I told her. "If you wish to stay, there's no stopping you, though I don't know if it's wise for you to remain around me, especially since this ring can only be used twice in one week, then it has to recharge for almost two, so I can't always rely on it, and since I got this metal bracer practically welded onto my skin, I can't use my shapeshifting ability. I personally think you'd be safer without me around, so I advise that you go to a good inn around here and forget you ever met me. Lots of people around here would condemn you for just looking at me," I told her, standing up.

Lina shook her head rapidly. "No way! I wouldn't leave you... Safety doesn't really matter to me. Besides, you're one of the first people I've met who's been nice to me. Most people just ignore me... I don't want to leave," she repeated. "And I can't forget."

I looked at her kind of oddly for a little.
"You do realize how crazy you probably sound to most people?" I asked her. Without waiting for a response, I continued, "I have to go to Blackstaff now, but I can meet you somewhere else. There's an inn that knows me pretty well, down in the dock ward. I can meet you there, if you want. I won't blame you if you aren't there. We can meet there in the morning, at about two or three hour past dawn. If I'm not there, you'll probably find me somewhere in the prisons. If you're not there, I'll understand," I said, turning my back and walking towards the tower to reclaim that which was mine.

Lina shrugged. "Well, no one ever said I was fully sane..."
As the other person - she still didn't know his name - walked off, Lina shrugged. "Funny guy, but nice all the same."
She had to look down a few streets before finding one that lead to the docks. Unfortunately, there were quite a few inns. Standing outside one, Lina said,
"Well, I'm early. I'm bound to see him coming."

Outside Blackstaff Tower, I put my hand against the seamless black stone wall and ran my fingers along it. If all the books I had read were true, there should be a door hidden by illsions somewhere along the wall.
After a little while, I felt a crack beneath my fingers. Searching with both hands, I managed to locate the handle, and entered. Looking around, I couldn't see anyone.
"A Forest elf? We don't get many of those around here," said a deep voice from behind me. Turning around, I could see the remains of a spell flicking around me.
"Teleportation," I remarked. "Interesting. I've never known of a spell of that kind that didn't make a noise or light."
"It is a complicated spell, and rare," Khelben Arunsun told me calmly. "But that does not answer a question I would like to know. How did you get in here?"
I lifted up my hands. "I've read a few books about Blackstaff Tower and its hidden door. All I had to do was feel it beneath my hands to find it."
"Which brings up the question of where you found books of that sort, and why you would wish to enter."
"An answer I will gladly give," I told him, taking off my magical ring. "An item that belongs rightfully to me and my family was stolen years ago, and passed through many hands before it reached your own. I realize that you most likely had no knowledge that it was stolen, and I wish for no hostilities between us. If need be, I will pay for its return."
Khelben was silent for a while. "What is this item?" he finally asked.
"A Mystlinje weapon," I told him. "The people who stole it from me merely wished to sell it for large amounts of gold, and you may have wanted it to study the Mystlinje race. For me, it is a valuable keepsake, a link to my past. It was my family's, and therefore mine."
"And how did a Tribesman come across such a rare weapon?" he questioned.
"If I knew what race she was, I would easily be able to answer that question. But having my memories and part of my soul stolen from me at a young age, I haven't the slightest idea," I told him.
Again, he was silent. "What manner of weapon was this?" he asked.
"A dagger, with a slightly curved blade, and a tail-kind Mystlinje engraved onto the blade. The tail is not evident in the carving, and the handle is thin, only the width of your finger. It has the words 'Understand what goes' engraved beneath the carving, and looks slightly newer than the carving, and the blade much older than both."
He cast a spell, and the dagger appeared in his hands. "This?"
"Yes, sir. That is the one."
He cast another spell, and a small glasslike globe appeared above the dagger, colors swirling inside it.
"It is yours," he confirmed. "The memory spell confirmed all you said," he told me, handing me the dagger. I took it silently.
"Thank you, sir," I said, bowing as low as tradition ordered someone to after a great deed done, then slipping the ring back on and turning to exit the tower.
"I expect you to tell me a full story of that dagger, sometime," he told me as I left.
"If I live long enough, and am not rotting in some dungeon at the time, I shall," I told him, exiting.
It was a silent walk to the dock ward, under the cover of my ring.
"Decided to wait for me?" I asked the human.

Lina turned around to see the figure behind her. Nodding, she said, "Yes. I did. You believed I wouldn't show up?" She laughed. "That's not like me. I say I will be there, I will. Even if it means danger. By the way, my name is Lina..."

I hesitated a moment. "Drintarr," I finally said. "Drintarr of the farming family Vaner." usually I didn't give that much information to people, but usually the people were trying to kill me.

Lina smiled. "That's an interesting name. Nice, too. My name's pretty boring..."
She looked over at the inn in front of her. "Is this the one you meant? This town... it's bigger than I am used to, and I didn't realize there would be so many places."

"No, the one I meant is down that road there a bit," I said, pointing to my left. "I guess I wasn't very specific, was I? Well, I'm not used to being around people..."
I shrugged and went down the road. After years on my own, actually having a conversation with someone made me uncomfortable.
