"That wolf is my pet. I ran into him while creating my tree/home. He tried to attack me at first, but somehow I tamed him.

Leslie looks at Hannah with newfound respect. "Wow," she whispered, "You tamed a wolf! Wait a minute- you have no home? What happened?"

"I don't know how I did it, he just started rubbing against my leg."
Hannah sighs as she begins her tale.
"I used to have parents, but since I had a very large difference between them, they threw me out of the house. They allowed me to take my belongings, but thats it. I went far away. I would never forgive my parents for what they did. After several weeks, I found a forest, and a very, very, very large tree. I hollowed out the inside and created a home, and then a wolf came by. You know how that went, so I'll skip that part. Days later, I heard chainsaws. Paranoid about my home, I rushed out and settled to a secret place. 3 weeks later, I went exploring, and found myself here."

"It seems as if we have something in common," Leslie remarked. "My dad was nice, but my mom and my stepdad have got to be as bad as your parents. We both left home (I'm leaving tonight), and we both have non-human friends." Leslie pondered this, pacing around the trees. Finally, she asked, "What is the wolf's name?"

"Actually, my mom didn't drink, and my dad didn't die. They just didn't want me in their family. The wolf doesn't have a name. I could never think of any."

Leslie nodded. "This is the first time I've told anyone anything about me," she explained. "I'm getting sick of hiding, of pretending that nothing's wrong." She glanced at Magnolia, who was squirming in her arms, fearful of the wolf a few feet in front of her. Suddenly, Leslie screamed, "I've got to do something!"

Hannah was surprised at the sudden reaction. "About what?"

Leslie looked up, surprised at her sudden outburst. "Everything. I'm sick of everything. Pollution. Animals getting killed. People dying. And I'm sick of my life! I'm sick of getting beaten up like a punchbag. I'm not sure running away will solve anything. It's kind of like suicide- brave in one sense, but cowardly in another." She sighed. "I'm spouting nonsense," she murmured apologetically.

*Hannah thinks* Gee, this person must be desperate. Mabye I should do something, but what? Take her mom to AA? Make her mom get a better husband? What am I supposed to do? And besides, her home must be thousands of miles away. *She sighs*
"I don't like my life as well."

Leslie glared at Hannah, suddenly feeling betrayed. "I can see what you're thinking!" she snarled, "I don't need your pity." She sighed. "I'm sorry. I just haven't talked to anyone in a long time. And I meant what I said, just didn't mean to act to snappish. Anyway, my life here is over. I need to move on."

"You can read my mind?" Hannah asked, surprised.
"Its ok. Everyone is snappish around me. How are you going to move on?"

Leslie smiled very slightly, turning up the corners of her lips. "I'm not sure if I can read your mind, exactly, but I can see what you're thinking. I could do it with my stepdad, so I'd get out of the house when he's angry. Sometimes it's like a color, and aura around you, and other time's its a minikin's voice. "I think I'll take the subway downtown, to the train station, and travel to my great-aunt's house. Until I think of something better, that is. I don't really want to leave school. It's not exactly fun, but I need it if I don't want to end up like my mom."

"I don't really understand that, but then again, I never understand anything.
When are you going to do that?"

"I'm sorry you didn't understand that," Leslie replied. "It's just that, I seemed to see this powder-blue light around your fingers, and I've just always associated that with pity. I can't read your actually thoughts, in detail, just the basic feeling." "I'm thinking of running away tonight. I'll bring everything I need in my backpack, and Magnolia in her carrier. I've got some money left from raking leaves in my neighbors' backyards, so I'll just buy some dinner at a cheap fast food restaurant."

"Thats very odd, because when I look at the mountains over there, I see a blue outline around it.
Where will you go?"
