Heh, I know a certain Chinese Neopian who had better not see these... she's always saying how people are stereotyping the Chinese... XP I'm probably going to step on some toes here, but if anyone is offended by these, then they are way too sensitive. Should people of English ancestry be offended by the Royal Lupes? Or perhaps people with a bit of French be offended by the Royal Aisha? All the royal pets have a country theme, it's usually just not mentioned because it's western and therefore 'normal' by most people playing. As for the costume's the Myncis are wearing, they're not 'stereotypical' at all, they're based on real clothing worn by real royals. Check out this picture of the Empress Dowager Tz'u-hsi: www.andrew.cmu.edu/course/79-104/Readings/Gallery/Gallery1/HWC886.jpgOr the royal robes worn by Emperor Qin Shi Huang: images.collectors.com/Articles/wushu2.jpg

I don't think they're...offensive or stereotypical. Well, they're probably doing these culture variations to add a touch of diversity to the royal colors (Not that the Philippines has any noteworthy royal-ish costumes that I know of). I like them both, because they're unique and colorful. The royal boy Mynci in particular looks positively royal - because of the look on his face. But the royal girl is really pretty in a princess-ish way...

I'm quite proud of my heritage, and appreciate that it was included with the royal neopets. I just don't like the squinty eyes on the female Mynci. Though asian eyes are typically more recessed and more almond-shaped than caucasian eyes, there was no need to turn them into tiny slits. That, if anything, is stereotyping. TNT could have left Mynci eyes as large as they were, and still have had no problems conveying their theme. This is all based on the only picture I've seen of the female Royal Mynci. My opinion may be discounted if it turns out her eyes aren't always squinted like that.

For those wanting to see her eyes not squinted: If the image is broken, then this Pet doesn't exist yet.[/img] From what I can find, that one pose is the only time her eyes are squinted like that. And the guys eyes aren't squinted in any of the poses I've seen so far. If it was in all the poses, for both sexes, I'd agree that there might be some stereotypes going on ~ but it looks like they were just trying to convey the universal good natured happy eye squint of a doting aunt/grandmother than anything else.

....is the female shaking her SHOE at the oppressor? Dang, this is the only time I've seen a Neopet use a piece of clothing as a weapon.

... I didn't really intend to start a debate over whether these are stereotyped or not. It is my opinion that the squinted eyes and pursed lips are pretty stereotyped, but I should have looked at the other poses before suggesting that the entire design is stereotyped--which I admit I did not do. It is true that they are based on real Chinese clothing designs. The expression on her face was really what I was calling stereotypical, and having seen the other poses, I agree that the female Royal Mynci is much less stereotypical than I first thought.
I do know someone who would call these designs stereotypical, however. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have mentioned it, as it was pretty irrelevant to this thread.
... I used too many variations of the word "stereotype" in there. Must find synonyms to make sentences less repetitive...

They look nice. I particularly like the male one. It's like a Chinese emperor. Two words!: Geisha Mynci? *points to female Mynci* xDDD Great looks though Wait? Geisha? *looks closely* TNT has mixed up Chinese with Japanese. I'm not sure how it could be offensive. I mean, it looks more like ancient Chinese garb than any sort of current day outfit. It might be offensive to those whose families might've experienced hardships during the Sino-Japanese wars. And it looks more like a kimono to me. Fortunately, I'm not easily offended by these sort of things. They both look nice. EDIT: I don't think they're stereotyping Chinese with the squinted eyes and pursed lips because from what I've learnt, Chinese empresses and rich chinese ladies at the time would look like that.

Only about as offensive as Mulan. To me, after living in Japan for over three years, that looks nothing like a kimono. It has some similar attributes, yes, but clothing from many countries in that area share many attributes. Whether Chinese Japanese Korean Or Ryukyu (Now part of Japan, was Chinese for centuries) dreams.world.coocan.jp/photo/znif/okinawa/shuri/t_Shuri_044.jpg (Image is too big for here.)

Mulan is an awesome film :3 But would that mean... the female Mynci is in concubine dress? EDIT: And her eyes aren't "slitty" in the first pic; she's got them closed

Well, I like those pets. And I don't think they're any more sterotypical than the other Royal pets. The idea of using different cultures is really neat... I wonder if Neo ever gets to my homeland with these designs o.o Though yeah, the Estonians have no royalty. We're a 700-year-old slave folk and the clothes our kings wore before that time looked everything but royal. Hehe, I know I'd get a good laugh if they ever decided to use Estonian national clothes tough x3 You guys would see lotsa striped skirts and metal. Our grannies wore more metal than today's most devoted punks =3
Hrm, I wonder if Neo has decided to open a Chinese-style world? First the Imperial Exam game, now this. I smell something here...
