Completed Series Review

Plushie Eaters by literalluau

I know you're very busy with a lot of stuff and that you probably won't be able to read this in a while but here it is, anyway. ^^

Like I mentioned before, Penelope is an adorable protagonist. She's innocent, a bit naive, and yet she's quite a spunky and creative character, as well. It's easy to love her. And, when you love the protagonist, it's easy to love the story. ^^ I find myself symphatizing with her a lot. I also find her dilemma to be very cute: her fear of plushie-eating Grarrls and the fear that they eat pets, as well.

The best part about your series is how you relied mostly on actions and thoughts to tell the story (this is actually quite contrary to your lovely articles you write which are always full of descriptions). The narration is fast-paced, action-packed, and easy to follow. Even your excellent characterizations don't rely on descriptions. You managed to convey your characters' personalities through their words and actions. You didn't give plenty of details and yet, I feel like I know the characters (even the minor ones) very well.

Although the skeleton of the plot was predictable (that is, I knew that a Grarrl would do something that would redeem Grarrls in Penelope's eyes), the circumstances leading to the ending were very entertaining (and some were surprising). The second part was what I enjoyed best because Penelope's antics made me laugh (and sad for her, as well). It also made me wonder how the series was going to end (since you warned me that the third would be the last). The third part of the series was for the most part predictable but still a lot fun. Penelope is adorable 'til the very end! ^^

All in all, a very good first series, Luau! ^^ I'd love to see you do another one next time or perhaps a short story?

The Would Be Detective: A Question of Strength by silentbutterfly
I quite liked this story. I liked the Mynci's personality - he was so sneaky and just plain evil! I liked Strife as she seemed like a very juvenile, young Uni who had gut instincts but didn't quite know how to listen to them...if you get what I mean I didn't get how she didn't have time to go to the bank etc etc but it's only a small thing. It was a good story, although the personalities of Strife and the Mynci weren't completely original. Nice ending as well.

Starry Starry Night by doughnut215

The silence in the cool, dark air was marred only by the song of the ocean. Gently rising and falling, a melodious tune emanated from the deep midnight waves. Neopia's moon could be seen overhead, a pearlescent milky white reflected in the calm sea, framed by the light of a thousand stars twinkling far away.
As the breeze danced across the open sea, a once streamlined shape emerged from the depths. A circle of ripples skipped lightly away from the head and shoulders which had surfaced from the sea, and a cloud drew across the moon. All was dark for a moment, but soon the ocean was once more bathed in silvery light. A steel-blue Peophin could now be seen, face and torso just protruding from the waves. Her old, intelligent eyes were focussed on the moon and her gaze was rapt.

Her name was Iliria.

I absolutely LOVED this part. It was such a nice image in my mind and it really added to the whole mood of the story. I just loved the parts with Iliria in them. I really got that sense of calmness, yet when the Darkest Faerie was there, it was full of suspense and tension. It was so well described, yet easy to follow. One of the stories I've read recently that I've been able to get an extremely clear picture in my mind. Just such a GREAT story! ^_^

Orbulon and the Queen of Mystery Island by tashni
Aww this was so cute. I hadn't read the prequel but I loved Orbulon, he was so cute! He just seemed to stumble unknowingly into trouble! And Jhuidah was so funny. I never thought she'd be portrayed as an evil 'Queen' of Mystery Island but I always thought there was something about her...^_^ Cute story.

Dinner with the Kings by mygoodguild
I've never read a story in the NT that was written in second person! It was really well written as I never thought a story could be written well in second person. I really like the contrast, yet similarities between King Skarl and King Hagan. I admit, this story made me hungry! ^_^

The biggest problem I had with this chapter was the events leading up to Sweetie's capture. Ash was very adamant only a while ago about keeping everyone together. Yet, he fairly easily lets Sweetie go by herself. Even after they all get the "curtain" scare, he lets her continue on by herself! After that, it's still a while before they realize she's been gone awhile. If Ash, and Shad and Saura for that matter, were so concerned, wouldn't they be counting the minutes? Well, those were my thoughts, anyway.

Erf, you're right The only thing I can say for myself is the fact that they were all pretty close to a nervous breakdown and more worried about themselves. Out of sight, out of mind, y'know.

Dun dah dah dun... lessee what I have to say about 'em comics then.

Spooky: aw, the Magax plushie rocks =3 *pokes it* Yus, Tombstones's just priceless and I love that little "ow" in panel 4. And my personal favorite would be the baby Lupe's enthusiastic expression when he's running off to get the broom x3 What got confusing though was Tombstones's last speech bubble. The "i" and the hyphen were so close together that I couldn't read the word out at first. Just a side note... I still loved that comic ^^

The Happiest Quiggle: kehehe, the Faerie's um-expression was the best ^^ You've obviously put a lot of effort into the art... (and that comes from a detail-obsessed maniac so I know what I'm talking about) I couln't help wondering how the faerie stands up though. Her tail looks... crooked in the last panel o.o But I guess I'm just trying to dig up something to complain about so that I wouldn't sound too one-sided x3 That ultra-positive looking little Quiggle is so much fun :3

Notions and Nonsense: I personally think that it would've worked out better as a one-panel comic... didn't really flow that well. But I like the joke :3

That was my favourite part too I was computer-less for a while, and I had the idea for this story just going round and round for several days... So by the time I got to writing it, I had very strong images of how everything was. I think that came across in the story. And that's also why I'm kind of glad I didn't get an extremely detailed pic, since I wanted people to see the image for themselves xD

I did enjoy reading this piece, Tay. I think you did a spectactular job describing the kings and portraying their personalities, as well as highlighting their differences (though I picked up on some of the sibling-similarities) also. Your portrayal of King Hagan was especially nice for me, because I always pictured him as being this regal, too-wise-for-you (and therefore not really all that wise), stuffy old guy who sipped tea with his pinky finger in the air and whatnot. I was surprised to "see" him amble up in person to invite "me" to dinner, and I think having many different dining tables was a neat detail! Let's see... King Skarl was the usual King Skarl, and I'm quite amazed at how much "I" could eat.

I think my one gripe about this piece is that "I" didn't feel like me, if you know what I mean. I felt like "you" was just another third-person character. I think you directed the main character (the reader) to have more actions than thought, so for me personally, I didn't feel like I knew why I was doing what I was doing in the story, and the things I said didn't really fit with how I would have reacted. For this reason, I think second person is best used in those "create your own adventure" stories, where the reader still has some input.

For such a difficult POV, this was a very well-written piece! Haha, I hope you'll like my piece as much as I liked yours (that is, when I get around to finishing and submitting it )!

Thank you! I don't really think I'm that good at writing in this style, but I suppose I wanted to try it out. Actually, I wrote this a VERY long time ago. I submitted it a couple times, and it was rejected. I got lazy and let it sit. Then, what's the loss? Over a week ago, two weeks ago, I sent it in again and it was given the okay. Thank you for the in-depth review. I'm hoping that these will make me better. I don't think this story was all that great, but I've gotten some pretty nice fanmail. ^^ +hugs fans+

I will also take that to mind, about you not feeling "you". I force too much action into the person. I need to let you think more. In the future, I will think about this one. Thanks!

Like everyone is saying, I like the way this way written! It was interesting, fun and very descriptive. I also liked that it was an idea I hadn't seen in the NT before Good job ^^

I am really happy to see how much attention this thread is getting. ^^ Here I come with my little contribution of reviews.

I’m trying a new tactic this time; Nimras’s reviews have inspired me somewhat—I think it’d be fun to give a brief description on my take on every comic in the Times. But, I don’t want the comic artists to lose out on getting my longer reviews, so I’ve decided that I’ll give my regular reviews to those who have requested or who I’m fairly certain will read the review. Basically, I’ll give the same reviews as normal, plus a bunch of others. Let’s see how this works out.

Long Comic Reviews

[glow=blue,2,300]Spooky[/glow]
Glee, I’ve been waiting for another episode of this comic. n;D Tombstones’ chatspeak is hilarious. XD He really looks kind of crazy-desperate, waving his hand in the poor Gelert’s face. x3 I love the Gelert’s pose in the fourth panel, with Tombstones’ broken “Ow!” coming from the door after it slams. The Baby Lupe is really adorable, especially in the second panel. His expression is just precious! ^^ In fact, all of your expressions are just perfect, as always—from Garu’s play-evil look in the first panel to Tombstones’ cluelessness in the last. n;D Oh, and I appreciate that you put the note about the two pets at the beginning of the comic rather than the end, so that it doesn’t detract from the punchline. *nod*

The first time I read through this, the emptiness of the room in the first two panels bothered me a little, but in reading it over I don’t notice so much. I still think some little piece of furniture or something would be nice in the background, but I know choosing props can be tricky/time consuming.

I love the perspective in the third panel. That door half-open, swinging towards the reader, and Tombstones poking his head through the crack is perfect for the scene. You wouldn’t get nearly the same effect with the emphasis on Tombstones if you’d taken the easy way out and shown a full-on view of the doorway. So, good job there. ^^
And, I love the background in the final panel! Those little houses are just so cute sticking up from the green yards, and that curved street is so adorably cartoony! It’s a perfect little comic town! :3 I also like the shadow under Claw. x3 He really looks like he’s floating. Tombstones is so adorably clueless here. The punchline is funny, if only because of the pets’ expressions in the last panel. ^^ I keep imagining TJ running and swatting at Tombstones with a broom in the name of defeating evil, as if he’s still playing that little game. XD Great work!

Woot for Shad and Saura! I like this comic; Shad’s comment about rotten omelette in the first panel was funny. XD I really like the art, with the little Tyrannian landscape all around. You don’t see landscapes like that drawn in most comics, and it was a nice change from the green fields and blue skies that appear more frequently. Well, the sky was blue here, but the browns of everything else gives it nice variety. I particularly like the background in the second panel. I think the little pets there are really cute, though I agree with Komori that they’re distracting. When I read it, I looked at those pets first, before the dialogue or the Grarrl. Ooh, I love how you drew the Battle Master, though. He’s so cute! ^^ I love his expression in the first panel, and his pose in the second is perfect. ^^

The joke was cute and original. I liked seeing the Battle Master’s little mumblings. I think anything else I could say would be a repeat of Komori’s review. For what it’s worth, though, I agree that the cause for the Grarrl’s mumblings was kind of weak. The coffee bit was so unexpected that it didn’t quite make sense. Maybe if you’d given some sort of precedent to it, so the reader could get used to the idea of the Battle Master drinking coffee earlier… I don’t know. Still, this is a really good comic! ^^

Haha, cute comic! XD I thought the preview text was cute, actually, though it doesn’t exactly introduce readers to the comic—it’s sort of an extra joke that you only get after reading the comic. The joke was cute, the type we’ve come to expect from this comic series. I feel like the Usul should’ve been charging more for the lemonade, though. Maybe 100,000 NP or something. 500 NP isn’t really a lot. I also would’ve laid out the comic a little differently so that the punchline doesn’t feel so isolated in that last panel; maybe you could’ve stuck in the mini gag about sugar there. Don’t mind me, I’m rewriting comics again.

The art here is cute. I agree that it could’ve been more consistent, though. For one, the Usul’s face and ears are shaded in the first panel, but not in the second, and most of the other things in the comic aren’t shaded. I do like the Usul’s expression in the second panel. ^^ And the ice cubes floating in the pitcher are cute. The lemonade stand looks kinda two-dimensional, though. Still, this is really nice. Good work! ^^

Short Comic Reviews

Neopups Crossover
Haha, they should really allow you to choose which pet you want to bless on those quests. The art is really cute; I particularly like Garu’s expression in the fifth panel. TL looks so cute in the fourth. ^^ It took me a while to get the joke, but I’m slow. When I did get it, it was pretty funny. XD

Life With Virgos: 2.0
Sloth has pink cheeks… he looks cute. n:P The dialogue here could have some more punch to it, I think. The colored “T_T” emoticon in a word balloon bothers me. Poor Petpets. *shakes fist at Sloth*

Trigger Happy- Issue 1
Haha. I think the art style is cute. Though, the panel with the big-headed anthro Monocerous with his “*wiggle* *wiggle*” bothers me, probably for the same reason that I can’t stand most Baby Neopets. But that Meerca’s last expression is priceless. XD

Tailspin
Cute; I like the art. The lack of punctuation in the dialogue bothers me, though.

NeoComp
Look at that Niptor hiding under the bed! The expressions in the third panel are great. XD

Island Babe and Friends
Mm… cute joke, though I’ve seen it before. I can’t say I like that an entire bright yellow panel is devoted to a tiny afternote saying that there’ll be more comics on the way, especially since this is not a first-time comic. ><

WARNING: Paint Does Not Wash Off
The art is cute; I particularly like that Shoyru sitting in the bathtub. The word balloons are in the wrong order, but for some reason I read them from right to left anyway, so I got the joke. Cute little ducky. ^^ The heading “How to get the paint off your neopet” kinda conflicts with the title of the comic, though.

Neo Randomness!
Oh, the horror of a perfectly clean floor ruined! Poor Gelert. This reminds me, I need to start getting Lulu to clean up after her Slorg. n:P

Confusion Among Pets
Uh… ‘kay. There should’ve been some precedent to the Meerca’s statement, methinks.

Don’t Forget
The art is cute. Fuzzy Jubjub. ^^ I wish his eyes weren’t directed at the floor all the time, though. A few too many panels, in my opinion, and the text at the end isn’t really necessary.

Little Slipper
Aw, poor Gruslen. n:P The copy-and-paste site image combined with user art bothers me. There’s also the dreaded first-time author’s note…

Why do some pets glow?
I like the Angelpuss’s expression. “Inflammable” is an ironic word, all right. Though I don’t see how the title relates to the comic…

Haha! I think I fit the description of that constellation. n:P The Rainbow pet is cute.

Ah, the famous Evil Ball of DOOM. I thought there were two EBoDs when I first read it, but then I realized it was a mirror.

Methinks the subtitle isn’t necessary. The art here is very nice. The way the pet is turned in the first panel looks a bit confusing, but even so, it’s a nice picture. Poor pet, I feel for you. The scribble is kinda cute, though. ^^ I would’ve left out the last panel and instead put the red pet in the background of the second panel with some horrified expression on her face, but that’s me rewriting layout scripts again.

Ludicrously Odd
Poor Ghost Lupe. I think the repeated text in the third panel is a bit redundant. Cute, though.

That should teach you, Jake… Kind of a cautionary tale here, eh? n:P

Poor Jubjub and Gruslen. And the Feepit did speak at the end. The punchline feels kind of isolated, though. Another bit of dialogue after it mighta helped to drive it home.

Hooray, thank you for the review, Huntress! ^^ Glad you like the faerie's expression; I thought it was pretty cute myself. ^^ Hm, yes, the faerie's tail does look crooked in the last panel. I was trying to draw her bending over, and made the end of her tail a tad too short. In the first panel, she's supposed to be half-sitting on the fountain edge, though I drew her a little too far away from it. >.> As for how she stands up, though, I have no idea. ^^ Water Faeries must move on land somehow, though. I've seen a number of Times stories that describe them as "walking". Maybe they swim through the air? *mental image* XD

I'm glad. ^^ Hmm...I guess the Previews thing really does get in the way sometimes. Then again, that's not the reason why I'm doing a lot of reviews. I have a feeling we're hitting Page 6 soon. Hope this is going to continue for a while.

^__^ Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and flattered that you noticed so many things about each panel. And I'm glad everyone liked the broom bit. It seemed the actual punchline was a bit weak, so I felt I needed that little early joke. I'm happy it worked out.

I see what you mean about furniture. My comics have always been lacking in the background department, but hopefully I'll be able to improve that in the future. Hee, we'll see if my current Animation Layout class helps my comics. ;D

*nods* I see what you mean. I probably should've redrawn that bubble. The word is indeed rather squishy. I guess that's the risks of hand-lettering the comics. I really should be a bit more careful. :3 But I appreciate that you noticed it.

Something tells me that one reason for this board's length is Psycho's all-NTWF list. You know how the review threads usually go... people start requesting, the list grows slowly and by the time everyone has requested and start to think of reviewing, the previews board already runs in. It all takes a few days, y'know, and not everyone has the interest of keeping a constant eye on the list, seeing if it has grown or not. *raises hand* I say we should keep compiling 'em all-NTWF lists. So much more convenient ^^

Very professional sounding! I liked it. I could tell you did extensive research and it paid off. This was extremely well written, and the small bits of humor thrown in made it better. For some reason, I especially liked this line: "Under the scrutiny of Captain Hackett’s only eye," It was amusing for some reason. Well done. I'd say write more reviews, but there aren't any other restaurants, are there?

Ah, Neopia’s two restaurants… and none of them family restaurants. *grin* Someone invent Arby’s! The imaginative descriptions of the restaurant experiences and the food were beautifully done. The detail of where the food for each restaurant gets it’s food and how it’s preserved is a nice touch too. About the only thing I’d have liked to see added was a comparison of cost converted into Neopoints. But with doubloons exchange rates always fluxuating I can understand why it was left out.

Thanks for the review, Nimras! I decided it was best to leave dubloons out of it, for that very reason. Plus, I was lazy, and I didn't want to make the article much longer xD I realized also that neither restaurant was family-friendly, which is why I added the part about the young Neopets and whatnot under "Kelp" xD

You know how the review threads usually go... people start requesting, the list grows slowly and by the time everyone has requested and start to think of reviewing, the previews board already runs in.
