Nature of the work. Load-ins for shows can be anywhere between two days to two weeks, depending on the size of the show. The electrics/lights load-in for this Opera lasted about four days. I was there for two of those days, and Max happened to be working those same two days. $16/hour for 16 hours. Load-ins and load-outs are FTW. ^_^ That's very nice. ^_^ I think I'll get into theater stuff in college. Well, that depends... Some places don't pay as well as others. The standards for the Overhire Electricians and Carpenters seems to start at $16/hour, and goes up from there. (I mean, at least in this area.) For running a show (deck crew, spotlight operator, board operator, props, etc.), you can get anywhere between $50 and $1200 stipend for the entire run. How much you're paid depends on the size of the company; the bigger the company, the more you're likely to get for running a show. (Unless you're part of a union. I've no idea what the pay is for the average union stagehand.) Technical theatre usually doesn't pay that well unless you're doing overhire work. EDIT: And that's the Backstage Theatre 101 lesson for the day. Next week, we will be covering the many uses of gaffer's tape. XD

Xylophone: If you want to do theatre, you could probably just go for it now. You don't even need to join your school's theatre program to get started! Just research the local theatres and theatre companies in your area, and shoot the artistic or production managers an e-mail telling them you'd like to get involved with backstage work.
I suggest doing some volunteer work first. The people in charge of hiring crews really like experience. I'm positive there are smaller theatres out there who are more willing to hire the more in-experienced stagehand. You just have to seem like you're intelligent, capable, and willing to learn the ropes when you go in for an interview.
