There are many possible religious answers, such as the one Shroomish gave, and other scientific ones, including Darwin's evolutionism and the "Big Bang" theories.
I don't doubt that someday we'll have a clear-cut, definite answer. Until then, though, I'm just going to leave the pondering to the philosophers and geologists.
