A lot of people have been asking how they can become a moderator around here. Now we're going to take a step back from that and post what it is a mod actually does around here and see if after reading it, anyone really wants the job after all.

Okay, the way I see it, there's a couple reasons why someone would want to be a mod and why they aren't very good reasons.
Status - counterbalanced by responsibility. If something goes wrong, we're the ones taking the blame since we're supposed to prevent blowups and such.
Power - tough calls. Lock a thread that may escalate into war? Or let it stay and try to simmer things down? Or just huddle in a box and hope some other mod comes along and solves things?
Getting the inside scoop - *looks around* Cause we got the dirt on the members, yo. And there's so much talking about people behind their backs.
If anything, being a mod is mostly downsides. You've got to hold a higher standard of behavior and monitor everyone else's while you're at it. And there's going to be some people who just don't like you because you are a mod... don't know if that's true at this forum, but I've seen it at others. You're called on to solve difficult problems you might not know how to solve, and if you are forced to act in a way that tics someone off, well, guess who gets to take the heat?
Case in point - I had to ban someone from my guild last week. This guy went nuts on everyone and who got to take it? Meratocat. She had nothing to do with it and she still got treated horribly simply because she was a mod.
So yeah. I don't know why any of us are here now... we must be gluttons for punishment.
Quoth Endeth
I hope that helps dispell some of the myth that this is such a fabulously glamorous job. If you want more evidence of monotony, I can give you examples aplenty - as can the rest of the oh so lucky forum slaves..er, mods.
Woof.
