Well, you really could sue and win a legal case to get profit and credit for your items.. But I'm sure that they staff would never ever use our stuff, they have much much better ideas and wouldn't dare tempt fate if they did such a thing. ^^ Actually, you would probably sue and lose the legal case. Of course, there are lots of legal issues, but while a...let's say, an "Oddhatter" plushie, based off my character may be questionable, a "C-Poogle" or a "Moo" plushie clearly belongs to Neopets(since it is obviously derivative). Like I said ...legalities versus ethics. I like to believe the staff has the latter.

But you could sue, and at the stage of developement Neopets is at, that alone would probably be more than just an inconvenience. And they KNOW it.

By the way, a lot of work contracts cover this copyright too.
Pretty much all workplaces insist that their workers relinquish their copyright over all work created for them. So if you design a character - they own it. A few work places also extent this to all work done during your term of employment.
Actually, until it was revised, the work contract I signed for the dinky web design firm I work for handed over everything I worked on during my employment to them. So technically, for a short period of time, Spazowham Design Group owned oddhatter.net.
But back to the copyright issue....
...According to US copyright law - they own all your fan art/fiction ANYWAY.
edit: actually, according to (mostly)universally accepted copyright law.

You know Mina, you remind me of Aera_Eaglewings. She wrote two stories for the NT, including a great series called "Pups of the Wild". However after that she wrote nothing more but instead wrote stories which "instead of Neopets, contained the animals which probably inspired the respective neopet species". But by the time I actually wanted to see those stories, she had taken them down as apparently *anything* uploaded onto the Neopets servers belonged to Neopets. She says she's now got her stuff on Elfwood, but I can't find her Elfwood name. If anyone knows what it is, I'd like to know.
Anyway, I think she was being too paranoid. I know the basics of the copyright laws (including the much hated DMCA) and if there was something I'd like to ensure remained copyrighted to me, I would not submit it to Neopets and make it non-neopets related.
Also when someone asked if they could write a story like Scooby Doo but with different names for characters, Scriptfox replied that it is an an exception if you don't keep the original name. "Besides, the corporations are smart. As long as you don't try to sell your Scooby-Doo like thing, they know you're just spreading the word of Scooby Doo" I believe he quoted.

Yeesh, copyrights are scary, scary things. ; But, wouldn't the fact that if your a minor that you really couldn't enter a legaly binding contract with Neopets without parental permission? In any case, I wouldn't give two cents and a rat's behind if Neopets did anything to my stuff. I've never really cared for my stuff, so if they did anything I couldn't care the slightest...^_~

There are TERMS AND CONITIONS??? If they're there, I never read them. They can do 'anything in the universe' to our stuff? I think that's pushing the limit a little. I mean, what's ours is ours, and they can't exactly change what was written by us, and submitted by us. Isn't there some law against that? Wait...All this was probably said before...I'll shut up now.

There are TERMS AND CONITIONS??? If they're there, I never read them. . You should read them - right here at www.neopets.com/terms.phtmlIf you don't, you might eventually break them and get frozen. At this forum alone more than one good person got frozen because they didn't read the Terms.

COrrect me if I'm wrong. I think his name was Oswald or something. He didn't lose it. He sold it. As for the whole minor thing...the Terms do cover that too. - "By uploading or otherwise submitting any materials to us and/or the Site, you (and your parents, if you're under age 18) automatically grant ...blahblah"...

Like I said ...legalities versus ethics. I like to believe the staff has the latter. I myself honestly do believe that the staff would leave your character alone if you submitted it in the form of a comic or what not. Unless they can make money off of it, you should be fine *knocks on wood*. I for one will not be pushing it as far as my own characters go in NT comics, as I would suggest to everyone to do with their own comics. Esh... copyrights... a very scary thing indeed.

Isn't there some law against that? Well, there ought to be. I think it's completely unethical for the Neopets team to claim that they have every right to OUR stuff, and can use it anywhere without giving us a shred of credit. Perhaps I should go over some more copyright laws to see if this really is legal.
