OK, on the suject of comics, how do you feel about the different styles of art e.g. anime, cartoon, and that done with paint(computer). How do you think it reflects comics in our world.

I personaly never really note the style of comics. If the story is good and the pictures are good, then I'm glad. ^_^ But then there is a point where if the art is very, very bad, then I loose intrest. There a quote that goes "The best animation cannot save the worst story, and the best story cannot save the worst animation" or something like that. I cannot remeber it verbatem. ;

BUt some of the comics in this weeks times are just bad. like quigle quacks isnt good art or a good story, the to top it off, some badly drawn quigle thats not even in the story comes and says "its official, this comic officialy rocks." They really have to edit that one out.

They really have to edit that one out. Yes; I didn't like the art and it wasn't funny at all!! As long as the art is decent (meaning that I can tell what things are) and the story/joke is interesting/amusing, I like the comic. If there is really good art but not a good joke or story, I don't like it, and if it's really funny but poorly drawn, I can't figure it out. Therefore, I agree with Linnen.

I think it really depends in the style you're working in.
If you're working in modernism, you can just drizzle paint on a canvas like Jack pollock and call it art! And darn it look at Andy Warhol! His pop art is very cool, if not strange. And cubism is pretty cool, I happen to enjoy "3 musicians" by Picasso. Stuff from the dada period like Nude Decending a Staircase can be freaky, but it's kind of funny in a perverted sort of way.
But if you want to get into older renassiance art, you have to make admends for realism. Personally I perfer the more modern 20th century stuff.
However, comics are the ultimate merge between art and writing and they need both to be a sucessful strip or even have a good storyline. However, the restraints of newspapers often effect this, so It takes a while. Oh well.
As for computer art, you gotta have good programmes. If any of you have seen "Treasure Planet" some of the art technies were amazing. The Disney Animators devolped a speical programme to make their backrounds appear like an OIL painting.

I don't think art HAS to be good in a comic unless it fails to get your point across or the comic itself is bad to begin with and the art just adds to its off-puttingness. I, myself, don't think I'm a horribly good artist, but my ability to do expressions is getting a little better. I'd like to get to the point where there's no question of what's going through a character's head when you look at their face and not "....hmm, well he LOOKS mad...better read the thought bubble to be sure he's not just constipated".
I've gotten quite a chuckle out of a few of the comics in the Times that had a good joke but bad art.....but likewise I've groaned and hit my head against the desk at several comics with decent art and a really lame joke. Maybe I'm just picky x.x

I, myself, don't think I'm a horribly good artist, but my ability to do expressions is getting a little better. I'd like to get to the point where I personally think your characters' expressions are one of the best parts of your artwork. And you have most certainly developed your own style. I think I could recognize your artwork anywhere with those particular expressions that your characters have. It's just so you! Not to mention that the JOKES in your comics are usually top-of-the-line. And, like you, that's what I really look for in a comic. Neopia will NEVER forget Sloth with My Little Uni underwear on his head running around singing show tunes.

I agree with both Karma and Linny, the joke is the focus, and the drawing is just a method of communicating it. But really bad art can turn you off an otherwise good comic. Personally i'm fairly happy with my art, but my jokes need a lot of work. If my drawing was a lower standard, the comics i do simply wouldn't get in, 'cos they certainly can't stand on humour alone.
Aw, shucks lapin. Thankyou.
