I've been vaguely lurking on this thread, but I do not feel like I have enough to say about it beyond "NFTs bad". So I've mostly just been lurking. That thread has been one of the most cringe-inducing things I have seen for a good while. Putting aside the obviously scammy content, their use of memes is a mix of the worst of 4chan doing a "how do you do fellow kids" routine. I also do not get the impression they know anything about the current demographic of Neopets. What are they trying to do? Who are they appealing to this? I am genuinely so confused. I suspect, completely non-sarcastcially, that the thing was actually written by someone who got their start in 4chan. There are alt-right dogwhistles all over that twitter thread (Hunty just informed me that "Fren" is another one), and that isn't something that would just kind of happen by accident.

Wait, "Fren" is a 4chan thing? Eurgh. >< I use that word a ton. You're probably right that this was written by a veteran 4channer, one who probably still visits that site. Some of these memes feel far too recent (how I know: I have a Reddit addiction, and things are sometimes cross-posted from 4chan there, plus there is some cross-pollination). That still leaves me to ask "why". Pretty sure veteran 4channers would find Neopets too cringe and kiddy. Maybe they would have some nostalgia, but those would most likely be rare. And regular Neopets users now...well, there is a joke that a good chunk of people who played Neopets turned out to be LGBTQ+. So, explain to me the crossover appeal. xD

The whole thing is being built up as a pyramid scheme: the NFT crowd buys the NFTs when they first come out, making them the first layer of the pyramid. But they're only going to buy with the intention of selling to us, the actual Neopets players. That makes us the second layer of the pyramid, but for the people running a pyramid scheme nothing actually matters beyond the first layer, the initial buyers. Meaning how we feel about the whole deal ultimately doesn't matter to Solana et al. But if they can attract the cryptobros by making them feel superior to us Neopets plebs, then that's what they'll do.

How it started: la la la dinking around enjoying this retro virtual petsite that may be dying but that we still find ways to enjoy. How it's going: well, I for one have been thoroughly educated tonight. "Fren" stands for far right ethno-nationalist, so Neopets is cosying up with some super lovely company here.
Someone on the Neoboards relayed the story of how they as a social media presence were once approached by a company offering to partner up with NFTs and upon closer inspection, the company in question was a massively sketchy empty shell. So they theorized that this is what happened here - an NFT venture approached Neopets/Jumpstart/takeyourpick, offered le big bucks and they fell for it. And now we're seeing the dumpster fire flare up over and over.

I probably should have realized the Fraze here was the Frazeocity on JN, lol. So we're supposed to be the second layer of the pyramid, the people them and their fellow NFTer are mocking. They expect us to then buy the NFT from them. What logic are they using that makes them think that's going to happen? * The majority of Neopet players have shown they don't like NFT so there goes those people (many whom are pretty much the ones making up the majority of the Neopets site). * Even for the players who are/were interested (for some reason), now you've gone and insulted them. Pro Tip: People aren't as willing to buy your stuff if you make fun of them. * Do they think Neopet players have ANY spare money? If we spend money for something Neopets, it'll either be on NC or physical merch. We already got a digital pet (one we can do things with even), and we can choose their appearance also, so... Now, I know what you're thinking: "Solana isn't thinking that far, once the first layer buys their stuff they're gone". Very true, this is honestly more of a question to the NFTbros. If you're bottom line is selling these NFT for profit, WHO are you selling it too? It's not going to be to Neopet players, and any business that wants to do something with Neopets will directly do business with Net Dragon/JumpStart/Neopet. Who's the end customer here? You can't be collecting just for pure collecting because it's just a random Neopets image they randomly generated, you can't do anything with it. At most you have to hope they keep *some* of their roadmap promises but that raises a whole bunch of other questions which leads to the conclusion "you don't need NFTs to do that".

So, their strategy is to sow, ahem, Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, to use one of the language, which was what they were accusing us of earlier. Hypocrites.

So.... Is spending/using NC that you got from a site event and didn't pay for yourself going against the spirit of the "no spending money on Neopets" protest? Not like they'll notice any difference from me in spending actual money with neopets, because I've never spend actual money on Neopets.

I don't think that'd count as you spending money on Neopets no, since it's technically already spent and now the product is just waiting for use.

If you're particularly fond of your NFTopet, I'd recommend downloading and saving it to your computer. Just as with real NFTs, there's always the risk that it won't last forever. Wouldn’t that be just the perfect final demonstration of what a scam this all is if JN just completely deletes all these NTFopets afterwards? So, about that:

RIP NFTopets. Again.
I've already saved the images of mine, because I am well aware that digital content never lasts forever. XD
(Not that I have any real attachment to them - I just want to keep them as a memento for this historical moment.)

Re: "Fren" - My initial reaction to learning it was from 4chan was: "Well, maybe it's one of those tamer things that has become popular but doesn't actually mean anything bad, and it's just supposed to be one of those fun 'as it sounds things.'" Then reading Hunty's post explaining: "Hoo boy, nevermind!" We just can't have nice things, can we. (For those who used it and didn't know this, thinking it was just a funny way to say it: Don't worry, these things happen, and I know that's not what you meant. It's on them for making it hateful.) Anyway, since it hasn't been stated here, re: that awful Twitter thread (which I don't think I need to explain why), Neopets Metaverse... sort of gave an apology for it... Specifically for using hateful memes. And not... literally everything else about it that's really condescending and rude and hateful. Plus all the precedent with them doing awful things without apology or consideration. So, y'know, take it with a tub of salt. Well, if I was considering returning to Neopets before, I don't think I am now unless this turns around, with the exception of returning to save stuff. Which heck, maybe I'd have to do anyway, with them scamming and alienating their userbase like this; dwindle down their playerbase enough, and there won't be enough left to support it. And as it is now, internet domains don't last forever. re: Jellyneo NoNFT-opet -- Yeah, I figured. xDD I think I'm good in this case; I don't have a particular attachment to mine. I love the message, though.

Someone neomailed me to tell me to stop saying NFTs are a scam, they're just "bad investments".
I did not dignify that with a reply.

Someone neomailed me to tell me to stop saying NFTs are a scam, they're just "bad investments". I did not dignify that with a reply. ... Isn't that what a scam is (or at least one form of scam)? A scam doesn't necessarily need to leave you with nothing to be considered a "scam", as long as the target/victim is leaving with less value than what they paid the schemer for they have been scammed. So, if it's knowingly a bad investment yet there's a group trying to convince you to buy into it, making you pay them a higher price than the product's actual value, that's a scam.
